McCoy leads No. 2 Texas to 59-20 romp of ULM

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—Colt McCoy to Jordan Shipley looked as unstoppable as ever for No. 2 Texas. However, it was the Longhorns’ new speedy weapon that was drawing raves after an easy opener.

McCoy passed for 317 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown to Shipley, and freshman tailback D.J. Monroe returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown the first time he touched the ball as the Longhorns romped past Louisiana-Monroe 59-20 on Saturday night.

“We’ve known he was going to be great the whole time,” McCoy said of Monroe, who also rushed for 64 yards. “He’s a playmaker for us.”

Monroe redshirted last season and dazzled Texas coaches with his speed in practice. His TD return in the second quarter came at a big moment after Louisiana-Monroe had struck for a 75-yard touchdown catch by Luther Ambrose.

Monroe, a state high school champion in the 100 meters, took the kickoff at the 11, split a seam in the defense and bolted nearly untouched to the end zone.

“I don’t remember anything during the play. It was a really great feeling,” Monroe said. “I just wanted to be ready when they called on me.”

Cody Johnson scored Texas’ first three touchdowns on three 1-yard runs and the Longhorns got the rout for which they paid Louisiana-Monroe $850,000.

A Texas record crowd of 101,096 jammed into refurbished Royal-Memorial Stadium to watch the start of what they hope is a repeat of the 2005 national championship season. Many of those who stayed to the end gave a large roar at the news of rival No. 3 Oklahoma’s loss to No. 20 BYU.

Louisiana-Monroe dreamed of quieting the crowd like it did two years ago with a shocking upset on the road against Alabama.

“We think about that game in any game we go into, big game-wise. It always reminds us that it can be done,” Louisiana-Monroe running back Frank Goodin said..

Any chance of an upset lasted mere seconds between Ambrose’s touchdown catch and Monroe’s big return. The Longhorns rolled up 568 yards in total offense to win their 11th consecutive season opener.

Still, Texas didn’t get out without fumbling the ball away a few times and a few rare miscues by McCoy.

McCoy’s seven incompletions in the first half were more or equal to his total in eight games last season when he set an NCAA record with a 76.7 percent completion rate. Three came on dropped balls and he threw an interception.

There were a few other problems.

New starting tailback Vondrell McGee fumbled twice, likely putting his position in jeopardy despite rushing for a game-high 70 and a late touchdown. Until his two drops, Texas had gone 17 games without a lost fumble by a running back.

On defense, broken coverage led to Louisiana-Monroe’s long touchdown pass in the second quarter. Trey Revell led the Warhawks with 197 yards passing.

“Colt wasn’t as pleased with himself in the first half, but his standard is set really, really high,” Texas coach Mack Brown said. “If we were great tonight, why practice any more? Opening games should be your worst.”

While McCoy tries to break in young receivers, he and Shipley are as in-sync as ever. Granted a sixth year of eligibility after losing two seasons to injuries, Shipley had a career-high 180 yards on eight catches.

The 78-yard TD was the longest of his career and came after he easily beat the defender on a deep route.

“If I throw it up for him, he’s going to get it,” McCoy said.

And quarterback-turned-receiver John Chiles shook off an early drop to catch a 14-yard touchdown in the third.

McCoy finally came out early in the fourth with Texas leading 52-10. Freshman Garrett Gilbert, a former high school All-American, showed a bit of McCoy’s style by completing 4 of 5 passes and capping his only drive with a 12-yard touchdown run.

“You always remember the first time you run out in the stadium,” McCoy said. “I remember my first time. It’s a good feeling.”

To be the man, you have to beat the man. Florida is #1 and they should be! But, Texas IS the best team in the country that didn't win the NC last yr.................HOOK 'EM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, Utah was the best not to win the national championship. Undefeated and smashed Alabama in the Sugar Bowl - worse than Florida beat them. In fact, against Florida, 'Bama was leading into the 4th and had a shot at winning. Utah dominated the Tide from the opening bell.

Yeah, Texas should have gone in...............but they have to find a way not to drop a game like they did with T-Tech last season.

The same small group of teams that dominated the first decade of this millenium are going to keep winning all the NCs in the next decade IMO: USC, LSU, Miami, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State--these 7 teams keep cornering the market on blue chip talent and I'd be surprised if anyone else contended for a NC in the forseeable future.

G-Miller...........Shiplety graduated last yr and is taking courses toward his masters now.He missed 2 complete seasons due to injuries and was granted a medical redshirt for this yr. (I know him, my lil bro went to high school with him) The baseball thing makes sense NOW. I have to say I respect you more now for serving our country as I am currently in Baghdad, Iraq. But someone with your past should show more class than to come on here and just bash the team that you dont like. (probably because your team lost) Also, I would hope you would do some research before you spew opinions as if they are facts. Other than that, thank you sir for your service to this great country. Freedom of speach is a wonderful thing huh?

Tony C, Shipley is still playing. I know Texas lost to LSU in the College World Series, that was past. If you read my comment, it was a future championship game, which would be Texas Rangers vs. Florida Marlins...the MLB is still on and both teams have shots at the post season.

I did graduate, and also served 24 years in the military...did you ever serve our country?

G-Miller, I understand your bitter. Instead of being mad and throwing weak jabs at Texas fans, be mad at your @#$%y Oklahoma team. Ya'll have lost like 5 of your BCS bowl games in a row. Good day.

Tony C, I know schedules are made way in advance and that the ADs are the planners, but who do you think sits on a committee and has a say in planning? The coaches do. I just do not like comments that b/c OU lost and Texas won, that automatically makes the Longhorns a better team. BYU was ranked 20th, where was LA-Monroe ranked?

For the record, I am not an OU fan...I am a NC sports fan, particularly in college basketball, who by the way, will destroy the Horns in December in YOUR tax dollar spent Cowboy Stadium.

G-Miller.....First off, the Ohio St. series was signed as a 2 game contract. One game at our house, one game there. And 2nd ,coaches do not make schedules! The athletic director and competition committe does. And 3rd these nonconference games are scheduled yrs. in advance. Texas A&M just scheduled games with USC for 2014 $ 2015 and games with Oregon for 2018 & 2019. Thats 9 & 10 yrs from now. Can you tell me who will be ranked higher or if teams will even have same coaches by then? Don't be a tool and act like the coaches make all the decisions or schedule games.............go cry about how ou got whooped somewhere else!

For Mr. Common Sense, post #72...

...isn't Christie Brinkley like a 5X divorcee? Heidi Klum? Not too sexy anymore, with being "Sealed" and all. I'll give you credit for Gisele Bunchen (until she's had three babies w/Tom Brady). Elle McPhearson, hello Mister Common Sense, the 80s called, they want their cover girl back for archive purposes!!

Dude, if you're gonna list Texas women to chose from, at least include Beyonce and Eva Longoria.

I wonder when Shipley will graduate? Didn't he play opposite Roy Williams, or was he the third receiver behind Johnny "Lam" and Johnny "Ham" Jones? The dude's been there for so long. The only Texas-Florida game for a championship will be the baseball World Series...'cause the 'Horns lost in the CWS!

Isn't Colt McCoy like a 14 years old? I bet he gets carded at the local 7-11. I wonder what will happen in 2010 when he tries to throw against a premiere NFL team...seeall the past Florida Gator QBs. If Texas is soooo good, why did they stop playing Ohio State in a home and home series? I wonder why Mack "come and play for me at North Carolina and I'll be there for your 4 years, yeah right" Brown removed the Hawaii home and home series a few years ago? Oh that's right, he couldn't get enough parole officer seats on the team plane ride to Honolulu!

Next week Texas will probably play Louisiana-Lafayette, in Austin of course, then be the "visitor" against Tulane in Houston, host Rice (again), take 2 weeks off, then play in Dallas, against Oklahoma. Florida's non-conference schedule (all at home of course) is a diabetic eyesore too; Charleston Southern, Troy, Florida International (gee, sounds so far away) and Florida State.

No wonder BCS is a Bull Cr$p System...
