DALLAS (AP)—Shawnbrey McNeal ran for 158 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown to lead SMU to a 31-23 win over Stephen F. Austin Saturday night.

Mustang quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell scored on fourth-and-1 with 7:47 left in the game to help the Mustangs (1-0) erase a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit and take a 24-23 lead.

SFA had a chance to take the lead with 2:13 left in the game but Evan Engwall’s 39-yard field goal attempt drifted wide left. Engwall had hit on all three of his previous attempts from 46, 38 and 48 yards.

On the next possession, McNeal scored on a 48-yard run to help the Mustangs win their first season opener since they defeated Kansas in 2000. The Lumberjacks (0-1) have lost their last four games to Football Bowl Subdivision schools.

This was the poorest officiating at the college levelI I've seen in a long time. It was very obvious the game was a home game for SMU, even though SFA made a lot of mistakes and lost the game on their own. Too many miscues and some questionable play calling by the coaching staff.

the refs. missed a lot of calls. I think since sfa got 200k from smu this was a game to be lost by sfa thanks to the refs.

No this will not be SMU's only win. I am predicting a bowl game behind the running game of my lil bro Shawnbrey Mcneal. If we get some better production from the quarterback position and consistency on defense then a bowl game is possible. I know June Jones likes to throw the ball around but believe me my bro's transferring from Miami to SMU they will run the ball.

SMU very lucky to win. SFA dominated this game except for some close and questionable turnovers. Mitchell threw the ball poorly all night despite having time. The SMU secondary is bad, really bad. This will be SMU s only win this season. A sorry time on the Hilltop
