KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin’s tenure on Rocky Top is off to a smooth start.

Jonathan Crompton threw five touchdown passes Saturday, leading the Volunteers to a 63-7 rout of Football Bowl Subdivision newcomers Western Kentucky and their largest margin of victory in nine years.

“This is the way that we expect to play,” Kiffin said. “We have high expectations here. I just talked to them about understanding that was one game and it’s over. We’ve got to find a way to play better next week.”

In its first two drives, Tennessee looked as if it hadn’t learned much under Kiffin, the youngest active coach in the division. Crompton threw a pass over the middle that was easily tipped by Thomas Majors and intercepted by Jamal Forrest, and Montario Hardesty fumbled after a hard hit.

The Vols settled down after the first quarter, and Hardesty carried for 18 and 22 yards to help set up a 2-yard touchdown run by freshman Bryce Brown early in the second quarter.

Bobby Rainey fumbled on the Hilltoppers’ next play, and LaMarcus Thompson recovered for Tennessee. Crompton connected with Luke Stocker on his first of two TD catches to make it 14-0 only 7 seconds later.

“We played one quarter of decent football, and then I think for the next three quarters were physically dominated,” Western Kentucky coach Dave Elson said.

Tennessee’s defense looked every bit the stalwart it was in 2008, while the offense found the composure it was missing in last year’s 5-7 season. Running backs broke through the line of scrimmage, wide receivers ran sound routes and Crompton threw accurately.

“We really just tried to get our personality as a team on film. We wanted to be physical but smart. The game we just played is part of our resume, and we want to build that resume and send it out to our opponents,” Vols safety Eric Berry said.

The receiving corps hardly looked depleted by injuries, with Stocker, Marsalis Teague, Quintin Hancock and Brandon Warren each catching scoring strikes.

Crompton, who was pulled with 12:26 left in the game, finished 21 of 28 with two picks, and his five TD passes was one more than his output last season. Hardesty finished with 160 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, and Brown had 104 yards rushing and a touchdown on 11 attempts.

The Hilltoppers couldn’t capitalize on the early turnovers and had minus-21 yards after their first 19 plays. Tennessee finished with 657 yards compared to Western Kentucky’s 83.

Rainey had the Hilltoppers’ only score on a 19-yard run with 2:41 in the third quarter that made it 35-7.

The win was the Vols’ easiest since a 70-3 victory over Louisiana-Monroe in 2000. Their 380 yards rushing were the most since 2004.

The Vols were also joined by former Vols and current Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who before the game announced a $1 million gift for a new athletic training center.

Though the attendance in the 100,011-capacity Neyland Stadium only reached 98,761, the fans turned out in droves as Kiffin and the Vols made the traditional “Vol Walk” from their buses to the stadium before the game.

“I really had to make sure that I did not go up and down today, because that’s what I talked about with our team a long time last night—dealing with the emotions of a wonderful scene like the Vol Walk, a wonderful event like running through the ‘T’ and playing in front of 100,000 people,” Kiffin said.

Andy, I'm just saying Tennessee hired a coach that had a @#$% record with the Raiders. Don't care if the Vol's went to the SEC championship 2 years ago, that's nothing. I care more about how a team produces in a BCS bowl game. Texas wins BCS bowl games. Last season Florida lost game in reg season just as the Horns. Texas Tech played the game of their lives against Texas and won with a last second bomb, that's the way it goes. You can rep the @#$% out of the SEC, the only team I consider national championship worthy from the SEC is the gators. The two most overrated coaches are from the SEC, not including Stoopsy. Nick Saban who won 1 with LSU then went to the pro's and did @#$%e with the Dolphins, the owner should of never let him out of his contract. Lane Kiffin, that @#$%s funny, I won't say anymore about that chode.

and Jeremy it was just 2 years ago that Tennessee was in the SEC championship game losing to eventual National Champs LSU 21-14 in a great game, when was the last time that Texas played in the Big 12 Championship game?

Hey Jeremy how many times you going to show us you are a jacka$$? Tennessee is the 9th winningest team in HISTORY so I wonder if they have been good for quite a whole or not? you said on another blog that Texas isnt worried about Ole Miss, well Ole Miss wasnt worried about Texas Tech and we all know what Texas did in Lubbock. Keep the Texas talk out of the SEC room guy because Vince has been gone for quite a while and Texas wont be raising a trophy anytime soon

OK I HAVE GIVEN THIS SOME THOUGHT!! first off all of the trash talk from mostly gator fans about UT not playing anyone and running up the score is bull####. look at the facts. tenn. played a subpar team yes, but then again we went 5-7 last year so in comparison. florida won a national championship went 12-1 and put up similiar numbers against another subpar team that was way below what they are suppossed to playing considering they are the defending national champs. so tell me who is the ones here that should be imbarrassed? hell you all should have never even played teebow, what if he would have went down like the oklahoma qb did? then you quys would have been wanting to kill urban meyer for playing your star qb in a tune up game. so in comparison tenn has far more to be proud of than you gator fans. i think your season is going to be a big disappointment, while tennessee fans will be giddy even if we lose a feew games. we have no where to go but up. YOU ALL HAVE NO WHERE TO GO BUT DOWN, ENJOY THE FREEFALL GATOR FANS HA! HA! GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!

Why would Tennessee hire Lane Kiffin ? he's a douche with a way too hot wife. He did absolutely nothing as the Raiders head coach, except for blowing. That hire baffles me. I'm a TEXAS fan, so it makes no difference to me. Tennessee is gonna get shelled by Florida though. Tennessee could be another used to be good team to bite the dust like ND and Michigan.

no doubt that gator fans have no class, after all they are cold blooded reptiles. no seriously i have lived all over this great nation from my military career and by far the florida fans are the most obnoxious. disrespectable bunch of @#$%s i have ever seen. ga fans are usually courteous and very hospitable in athens, even alabama fans are for the most part just good ole southern folks. but those gainesville idiots like to throw stuff and run their mouths too much off the field. YES I AGREE NO CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO VOLS!!!!!!!!

I seen a spark in this years team that I havent seen since the '99 season. The Vols actually looked very good. The running game and defence was just awesome. I know W.Kentucky wasnt much, but maybe it was enough for this team to get a live game feel for what they have learned in practices and training. The true test to their abilities will come in the next few games. I just see the Underdog Biting back this year. My prediction 9-3, with the loses not being blowouts. The Vols wont be pushed around and very capable of beating any team in the nation when they have a good balance of offence to go with a speedy and mean deffence. I smell an upset in the swamp.

Anyone that says that Tennessee ran the score up didnt watch the game. Tennessee needed to run its offense which is NEW this year in game situations and that is what they did. For all the Gator fans that are running your mouth about running up the score you have a lot of nerve when the visor was running up the score by throwing in the 4th quarter up by 40. Tennessee on the other hand ran for over 380 yards so I ask you what did you want the running backs to do when the hole opened up just slide after 5 yards. Florida fan is just too@#$%y and has a short memory when it comes to running up the score and it means nothing to a real Vol fan. Real Vol fan knows that Tennessee is the 9th winningest program in HISTORY and doesnt need to brag in wins. Welcome to winning football Florida fan you have only been there for about the last 20 years we know your not used to being here

#90 angry dad...yes he did. It was a freshman highlight reel. 3 freshman running backs played, with Bryce Brown scoring the first touchdown of the game and also going over 100 yards. Nukeese Richardson returned punts and caught several passes, and freshman Marsalis Teague was the leading receiver on the day. In total I think there were 9 freshman that played...maybe more. The most freshman I have ever seen on the field at Tennessee in a game...and all looked extremely impressive.

We looked a lot better than any game we played last year and I don't care who we were playing. It's a tune up game everyone does it and thats just the way it is. I think the coaches have us going in the right direction, but the Gators are the champs and I think they are hands down the best in the country atm. I'm looking forward to the match-up in Gainesville to gauge where our team is but only an idiot starts talking trash about the best until we know where we are ourselves.

volsallday , The Gators gave up less than 90 yards with the starters in, the rest were given up when the second string and freshmen were in the game. Did Kiffin give his second string and freshemn a chance to play? I have to ask because I was unable to watch the game, they werent showing it in the Swamp.

My two cents....It's Division 1 Football....and I don't like Tennessee, Florida, or 'Bama...but there isn't a Pre-Season in College Football. So you have to work out all your kinks before the difficult games start...and if another Div. 1 team can't stop you from Scoring...then it's the losing team that doesn't have class...they should drop down to Div II where they can compete....2nd Kiffin wasn't around when this schedule was made, so only a mental midget would try to denigrate a coach for a week opener....Same morons who contradict themselves by saying Ohio State was crazy to schedule Navy for a Home Opener....Which one is right....too easy or too hard? Lastly, It is only 1 game, but it looked a lot better than last year from a Number of Programs....I'd much rather see Tenn, Mich, ND winning to start it off, then Northern Iowa, BYU, and Air Force....Football is about tradition...and when all the Big Guns are clicking on all cylinders...it makes Oct and November more fun for all of us!!!
