No. 11 LSU escapes Washington, 31-23

SEATTLE (AP)—Thanks to career nights from Jordan Jefferson and Terrance Toliver, LSU finally got going and put away a revived Washington team looking to end a streak of futility that stretched back to 2007.

Jefferson threw a career-high three touchdown passes to help the 11th-ranked Tigers hand the Huskies their 15th consecutive loss, 31-23 Saturday night in new coach Steve Sarkisian’s Washington debut.

Jefferson’s third, 6 yards to a wide-open Brandon LaFell with 1:54 remaining sealed it for the Tigers, though Jake Locker threw a touchdown pass to Kavario Middleton on the final play.

“We sputtered in the first half at times on offense,” LSU coach Les Miles said. “There were opportunities to take advantage of our opponent, and we didn’t attack them the way we should have.”

The Huskies are one loss from tying Oregon State’s Pac-10 record for consecutive losses. Still, they started strong, getting out to an early 7-0 lead and were down only 17-13 nine minutes into the second half.

Locker completed 25 of 45 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns, but Jacob Cutrera returned an interception 29 yards for LSU’s first touchdown late in the first quarter. Locker said he never saw the linebacker.

“That Jake Locker is mobile and active,” Miles said. “I’m very thankful that we came and performed like we did.”

Toliver caught two touchdown passes from Jefferson, who was 11 of 20 for 172 yards. And Toliver doubled his touchdown output from last season on two plays.

“We knew Terrance was going to get the ball a lot this game,” said Jefferson, who shook off two huge hits that left him woozy—including one that had him out of the game for one play. “They were coming with corner blitzes, and I just fed him the ball.”

LSU led 17-13 with 6 minutes left in the third quarter before Toliver twisted freshman safety Greg Walker into the turf for the second time for a long touchdown catch and run. This one, from 39 yards, put the Tigers up 24-13 and seemed to take the zip out of the fired-up Huskies.

Earlier, Toliver juked past Walker for a 45-yard score late in the first half to put LSU up 17-10 in its first trip to the West Coast in 25 years.

Even he couldn’t believe he found the end zone twice, for the first time since high school.

“It’s surreal,” said the junior who had just one touchdown in 13 games last season. “I’ve got to see the highlights.”

Washington’s new, variety-filled offense outgained LSU 478-321. The Huskies had 296 yards at halftime against a Tigers unit revamped from last season with the arrival of new coordinator John Chavis from Tennessee.

“I think our new defensive coaches did a good job. The team was in position to make tackles and do things,” Miles said. “We missed some tackles early on.

“At times I saw that Tiger defense that I want it to be.”

The Huskies became bogged down with just 62 yards from halftime until 9 minutes remained in the game. That’s when the dynamic Locker began running. He converted a fourth-and-1, and then a third-and-6, to get Washington to the LSU 6.

Then Johri Fogerson had a pass go off his chest in the end zone, and D’Andre Goodwin stopped running at the goal line as Locker’s pass darted through the back of the end zone. Washington had to settle for Erik Folk’s third field goal that made it 24-16 with 5:24 left.

“I think the initial goal from what I said earlier in the week, is when this game is done that the other team respects us—and I think they respect the Washington Husky football team,” Sarkisian said, uttering words unspoken last season when Washington was 0-12 under Tyrone Willingham.

“(But), that’s not acceptable. We play the game to win,” said the former Rose Bowl-winning coordinator at Southern California. “And unfortunately we were in the red zone five times and settled for four field goals and had a turnover. That’s how you can lose.”

Talk is cheap. Let the facts do the talking let's see how many crystal footballs do the Pac-10 schools have in their trophy cases. The SEC has taken the last three national championships and 4 titles in the last six years. BY the way in regard to trash talking LSU we have two in our trophy case how many do you have.

Look guys, LSu fans are ALWAYS gonna expect and hope for a total ass whipping on any opponent so dont expect fans to sit there and go"gee, i sure hope we play well this week". the Huskies played a great game and if they stay healthy and keep buying in to their coaches' schemes then they should have a great bounce-back season. as far as the tigers go...hey they won...buy what 8? and didnt the huskies get a td on the last play of the game so really they were down15. i fell asleep at the end since i am on the east coast. bottom line is that it was a good football game and fans on both side should be able to take something positive from the game...one thing for sure is not either one of those 2 teams are sitting around thinking about anything that happened last week because last week is over and this week is all that matters.

I'm a die-hard LSU fan but I was very proud of the way Washington played the Tigers. Going into the game I felt that Washington was a poor way to test how good LSU was going to be this season. I prefer tests by stronger teams. BUT, to my surprise, Washington came on very strong and at times, put a little fear into the Tiger fans hearts. My compliments to Steve Sarkisian and the NEW Huskies' spirit. You Huskies fans can stop counting consecutive losses and get ready to count consecutive wins. I think there will be plenty of those.
To the person who said that LSU would be at the bottom of the conference if they were part of the Pac 10, dream on. LSU can lose games just like any other team. Had Washington beat the Tigers, it would have been designated as a "big upset". Time will tell if it was an upset or a very well earned win. Washington may end up with only one loss this year and be National Champions. And LSU may end up with only one win this year and totally forgotten by mid-season. But, Washington was playing well that night and with the encouragement of their fans, rather than stupidity from people who talk like the one I mentioned, Washington is destined for great things. They have a great coach (it seems), great fans (for the most part), and a chance to make big time headlines this year when they whip teams like USC. How's that for a prediction? Go LSU Tigers; Go Washington Huskies.

If you were half as smart as you think you are, you'd have realized that I was just saying B.S. to irritate LSU/SEC fanboys. Obviously I don't really believe LSU would finish near last in the PAC-10.

And for the record, I go to Cal. Don't worry though, you can be sure Cal will crush whatever remnants of hope you have at the end of this season (though I doubt any bowl hopes will be crushed 5 games from now).

Although I should be partly thankful to Washington, though. Who else is going to let Jahvid Best run all over them for 300+ yards? Thanks, pal. Enjoy the rest of your season as the Pac-10 doormat.

lets see ...... who is in a better position to judge the 2009 Huskies ...... Chris ..... who is clearly a moron and knows nothing about college football, or a QB who has actually FACED the 2009 Huskies ?????? hmmmmmmmmm .... let me ponder that one for a moment ....

“We didn’t expect them to do as well as they did,” said Jefferson, who had to leave the game for one play but helped save LSU with a career-high three touchdowns.

“Washington, they are going to surprise a lot of people this year.”

im going to have to go with the latter of the two choices.

Chris ..... speculating that LSU would finish 8th or 9th in the Pac 10 is just another example of how detached from reality you are when it comes to college football. keep talking, you sound like more of an idiot with every word. if that Husky team that played LSU on Saturday is the 9th or 10th best team in the Pac 10 .... then the Pac 10 is WITHOUT QUESTION the strongest conference in the country. realistically though ..... if Washington plays the way they did on Saturday for the rest of the season, they are finishing no worse than 4th in the Pac 10.

david ...... playing a competitive game for 60 minutes against a good team after getting your ass handed to you all season long is called a dramatic improvement. i understand youre just nervous now ..... USC isnt getting nearly the gimme they thought they were going to get when they come to Seattle in two weeks. showing up wont be enough ..... they will actually have to EARN the victory. maybe if we opened the season with juggernaut San Jose St wed be sitting at 1-0 right now as well ..... some teams just have a little more balls than other teams when it comes to season opening games.

Dawgmeat, I was speculating that LSU would finish 8th or 9th in the Pac-10, depending on whether or not they could also beat Washington St. Never even specifically referred to Washington. Sad, but apparently Washington isn't up their in smarts with the rest of the Pac-10 either.

Good job SEC. Way to stomp on the overrated Pac 10. Even though UW didn't win a game last year it still shows how good, top to bottom, the SEC is compared to the Pac 10. Beat the Huskies by a whopping 8 points.

I can't believe all the LSU/SEC talking crap to Washington-- as if this somehow proves that the SEC is better than the Pac-10? A team ranked 11th in the nation barely skims by bottom of the barrel 0-12 Washington... and LSU/SEC fans want to talk crap? Unbelievable.

LSU is a garbage team that could barely hang with the worst of the Pac-10. I supposed they'd finish around 8th or 9th in the Pac-10, depending on whether or not they could upstage 1-11 Washington St. From the looks of it, I doubt it.

LOLOLOL............Geaux Tigers. Their is only one team in the USA as far as I am concern and it LSU. For those of you from UW or what it's called. Enjoy your continued losing season. Except the fact that you lose to a classy to that had to overcome hurddles to win a game. That LSU team show class and pose. A team that didn't panic which comes from good coaching.....and not jumping up and down on the sidelines like a bunch of fools. Les Miles = class............period.

Now ask Bill Gates to buy you a few games this year......it's the only way you will win a game.

It is so painful to read this exchange...the hatred that comes through these comments makes my hair stand on end...the SEC and Pac 10 have had their arguments...both sides make their points...but the way we communicate destroys the spirit of the debate...hatred comes through...it feels the same as our political discourse....so incredibly divisive...honestly, i fear for all of us

Do they have jobs up there in Northern New Kalifornya , I mean Washington ? From the looks of it, ya got a lot of time on your hands, considering you are actually editing comments to sports news about a football game you should have won (because LSU played poorly and your team played well above its ability) but you still lost because you are a bunch of west coast losers - just like when UT (that's the Univ. of Texas) took one from the cry-baby USC loser-Trojans.

Go edit your resume and practice up for SC (not South Carolina), losers vs. losers.

Nugent ...... just because somebody is fast doesnt mean he can return kicks. talk Washington kick returner #82 for example. hes the fastest guy on the Huskies and he cant return kicks worth a sh*t. he was brought down by the first guy who reached him every single kickoff. the Huskies kicker is awful, makes me seriously miss the Chuck Nelson and Jeff Jaeger days. you see that scud missile that came off his foot on that 40 something yard FG attempt he missed ???? while there was a lot to be happy about as a Husky fan watching last nights game ...... its quite clear we still have two glaring weaknesses in our kicking game and in our secondary. like i said earlier in the day ..... i cant believe we dont have a single person on campus that can kick a football better than the pile of crap we have on roster.

to #158 LSU has the fastest man in NCAA football back there to return kickoffs. I think UW was trying to avoid kicking to him. He is very fast but if a blade of grass, strong breeze, or if one of the opponents look at him, he goes down.
