No. 12 California races past Maryland 52-13

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP)—Jahvid Best was on the wrong end of the highlight film last year against Maryland, seen on his knees vomiting following a hard hit from a Terrapins defender.

Best was back in his usual role in the rematch, finishing off a long run to the end zone as California turned the tables on Maryland.

Best ran 73 yards for one of his two first-quarter touchdowns and the 12th-ranked Golden Bears avenged an early-season loss to the Terrapins last season with a 52-13 victory Saturday night to open this season.

“Last year we went down there and we felt like we didn’t play Cal football,” Best said. “We wanted them to know what Cal football was all about. We wanted to jump on them early.”

Kevin Riley added a career-high four touchdown passes for the Bears, who avenged last year’s 35-27 loss. Cal finished with 542 yards of offense and got touchdowns from five players.

“Everybody got involved in the action today which was good to see,” coach Jeff Tedford said.

This was quite a contrast to last year’s game. That game was played in East Coast humidity with a noon start and the Cal players looked half asleep at the start, falling behind 21-3 early in the second quarter and never recovering. This year, it was the Maryland players who had to adjust to the time change with a game that started just after 7 p.m. PDT.

The Terps never did and had their most lopsided season-opening loss since the first game in school history, a 50-0 loss to St. John’s of Annapolis in 1892.

“These guys are learning on the run,” Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen said of his inexperienced team. “We have got to make it as best as we can. I told them in the locker room, we have to look at this game and learn from it.”

Best heard quite a bit about last year’s game leading up to the rematch, most notably the hit by Maryland cornerback Kevin Barnes that became an instant YouTube classic. Best said he’s watched the hit a handful of times since then and usually laughs when he sees it.

“It’s rare to see somebody do that so it’s kind of funny,” he said.

Best made his own highlight reel in this game, starting with the long touchdown run that opened the scoring. On the first play of Cal’s second possession, Best burst up the middle and broke away from the Maryland defense. He slowed up at the 25 to wait for a block by Verran Tucker on defensive back Nolan Carroll, before finishing off his ninth career run of at least 60 yards.

It’s those kinds of runs that have made Best a trendy Heisman contender and the Bears a team to be reckoned with in the Pac-10. Best finished with 137 yards on 10 carries, including a 40-yarder that was sprung by a block from Riley.

But it’s the passing game that will probably determine how far Cal goes this season. Riley completed 17 of 26 passes for 298 yards, including a 42-yarder that dropped right into Marvin Jones’ hands in the end zone to make it 45-6. He also threw TD passes to Nyan Boateng, Skyler Curran and Shane Vareen.

“Everybody knows we can run the ball,” Riley said. “A lot of close games are going to come down to if we can make plays in the passing game. Tonight we did some good things.”

Riley’s first completion was a 20-yard strike to Jones that came after Torrey Smith fumbled the kickoff following Best’s first TD. Best leaped in from the 2 on the following play for his second score in a 42-second span.

That was Riley’s only completion in five attempts in the first quarter. But he found his stride in the second, connecting on a 39-yard pass to Tucker that set up a 3-yard TD pass to Curran that came after Riley avoided a sack by Jared Harrell.

Riley then stepped up in the pocket and found a wide-open Boateng on a 39-yard pass in the final minute of the half to give the Bears a 31-6 lead.

Maryland was supposed to be the team with the pressure defense after bringing in coordinator Dan Brown and his blitzing schemes. But the Bears had no problems moving the ball, getting big plays on the ground and through the air.

It was Cal that constantly pressured Chris Turner, sacking him six times and keeping the Terps out of the end zone until Da’Rel Scott’s 39-yard run made it 45-13 midway through the third quarter.

“Cal has one of the best defensive fronts we’ll see all year, so it was a good test for our o-line,” Turner said. “We’re not trying to make excuses but we have to make corrections.”

Hey burger in the scheme of things, who gives a rat ass about soccer? Seriously the football and basketball titles are great, but I cant see my terps as a soccer school. On a side note Football is the #3 sport at Maryland behind Basketball and Lacross. This years terp team aint gonna be that good, so you beat a bottom teir ACC team gratz Cal, maybe this year you'll succeed in your goal of not losing by 4 TDs to USC.

Hey, team is picked to finish last in the ACC, so who cares. So you beat a last place team that was decimated by graduation and is rebuilding...woo hoo! I am sure it killed you to get knocked out of March Madness back in March by the Turtle. Your Cal players didn't look too happy when the Turtle kicked their butts in soccer yesterday.

So when is the last time Cal won a championship in anything? Let's see, last year MD won a national championship in mens soccer (3 total) and womens field hockey (6 total). They are one of a handful of colleges that have won a national chamionship in football (2), basketball (1) and soccer (3). Only 3 other schools have ever done that. And how many schools won both a women's and mens basketball championship, mens and womens soccer championship and mens (11 total) and womens lacrosse championships (9 total)...surely not CAL.

MD has also won 2 competitive cheer national championships and a host of other lessor revenue sports....shall i go on?

Oh, and how many national championships has cal won????????? lately and please don't take me back to 1949 or something, lol. At leats MD wasn't puking on the field after their loss, they took it like men!

Gotta love when the losing fan base has to bring up last year to cope. That, almost as much as anything, shows how much we dominated the Maryland. Until next time, turtles, remember this shellacking.

So for Maryland fans, we are 2-1 against U of Cal in 2009. MD's B-ball team knocked them out of March Madness earlier this year. Football team lost Saturday and the NCAA men's defending national soccer champs MD beat Cal 2-1 on Monday. 2 out of 3 ain't bad!

I think Cal has the talent to do good things this year! But this is one game and they need to prepare for every week or the will get beat. I was at the Cal/ Maryland game and was fun to watch! Can't wait for the SC game. If Cal plays like this every week, they will win the pac 10. Go Bears!

Or we could have used the ticket money to pull a USC and pay for the best idiot players from the ghetto, then get them out of trouble when they commit sexual assault and make sure someone else goes to class and passes for them.

Considering what a "bi-polar" for lack of a better word, team Maryland was last year, this one game shouldn't be too much of an indicator of their season. Also, Cal could just be that good as thehey are loaded with returning talent in every position but linebacker. Last year Maryland had one of their up weeks when playing Cal (look at their schedule and it will demonstrate what I am talking about). Maybe Maryland is a bad team, but it is just as likely that they ran into a very good/great team.

Cal-Berkeley fans should be ashamed-- they could have used their ticket money to feed the poor or take up the socialist struggle in some third world country. Che Guevara would not approve.

Bigsix is showing his ignorance of college football. "Another overhyped ACC team" he says. You obviously know nothing about college football or you would have known that Maryland is picked to finished last in the conference due to their losing a most of the starters to graduation last year. Of the 12 teams in the ACC, MD is probably the worst. So engage your facts before you open your mouth.

maryland is no where near as good as they were last year, as you could see theyre offensive line struggled, and turner has absolutely no one to throw to anymore. im not trying to take anything away from cal, but maryland is not going to be very strong this year.

I don't think Cal got snuck up on last year. The game was played at 12:00 EST (9:00 am PST). It was hot and extremely humid that day also. Cal started well last year, but I think the heat, humidity, and time of game hurt them.

Wow, if that doesn't make a statement, I don't know what does! I think this goes to show that Cal got snuck up on last year. Just wondering; seems like Riley was much improved from last year. Would Cal fans agree with that so far?

That was rediculous. I hope Maryland is not as bad as they looked. If you know Tedford, he was probably doing everything he could not to run it up. If the starters would have stayed in....oooops! Can you say a hundred? Turtle fans have to be kidding about their chance of winning that game.

Just got back from Memorial Stadium, and the Bears lit the place up! I expected a victory, but not the domination (on both sides of the ball) Cal showed Maryland. WOW!! Should be an interesting four weeks, where Cal can make or break their season. After USC (Oct. 3rd), we should have a better idea how the Pac 10 is shaping up.....GO BEARS!!!

....and no excuses, like last year's "Oh, it's too early for the Bears!" (A 9am start/west coast). Don't want to hear "Oh, is 10 pm in Maryland". Lame. If you got game, then bring it. Cal just did not bring it last year, but they are aware of how dangerous the Terps are. GO Bears....

p.s. "Fear the Turtle"? Sorry, can't get behind that....
