Return to OriginalLAFAYETTE, La. (AP)—Chris Masson threw for 283 yards and two touchdowns to lead Louisiana-Lafayette to a season-opening 42-19 victory over Southern on Saturday night.
Masson, making his first start, was 18 of 24. He capped the Ragin’ Cajuns’ first possession with a 1-yard touchdown run.
The Jaguars took a 12-7 lead before Masson threw touchdown passes to Undrea Sails and Luke Aubrey.
Sails, also making his first start, rushed for 114 yards as part of the Cajuns’ 533-yard attack. Sails’ 2-yard touchdown with 1:27 left in the second quarter gave Louisiana-Lafayette a 28-12 halftime lead.
Southern quarterback Bryant Lee linked up with Juamorris Stewart on touchdown passes of 26 and 51 yards late in the first quarter to give the Jaguars their only lead at 12-7.
Stewart had 10 catches for 173 yards and Lee was 18 of 29 for 254 yards, but threw two interceptions.
