JoePa back, No. 9 Penn St. downs Akron, 31-7

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—The most compelling part of Penn State’s 31-7 win Saturday over Akron turned out to be the pregame introductions.

Joe Paterno jogged out of the Beaver Stadium tunnel with his players, his first game back on the sideline since the Hall of Fame coach had hip replacement surgery last November.

Then quarterback Daryll Clark and the rest of the No. 9 Nittany Lions overwhelmed the Zips in a first half so dominant, the rest of the game was a mere formality.

Clark threw for a career-high 353 yards and three touchdowns, and a tenacious defense held Akron without a first down until the third quarter as Penn State celebrated their 82-year-old leader’s return to the field.

“Did you clock me in the 100 meters?” Paterno jokingly asked afterward.

Wearing his trademark black sneakers and khakis—without the pants rolled up—Paterno struck familiar poses pacing the sideline and arguing with officials.

This marks his 60th season at Penn State—16 as an assistant and the next 44 as the man in charge—and he walked off the field with his 384th victory, now two ahead of Florida State’s Bobby Bowden. The Seminoles play Monday night.

Paterno’s apparently healthy again, too. He spent the last seven games of the 2008 season coaching on game days from various press boxes, ailing from a hip he hurt while demonstrating an onside kick a year ago.

“I just wanted to see if I could do it. I’ve been reluctant to do much running because it’s been less than a year since they replaced the hip,” he said. “I was glad I could come out … but I hope as the season goes on it will be a little better.”

Penn State left no doubt on the field they were the better team.

The defense held Akron to 186 yards total offense, 28 on the ground. The Zips managed a paltry 22 total yards and minus-17 rushing in a dismal first half.

Penn State’s defense had Akron quarterback Chris Jacquemain on the run most of the day, recording 13 tackles for losses and four sacks.

“They’re the best defense we’re going to see all year,” Akron quarterback Chris Jacquemain said. “They got a lot of pressure on me. I kind of expected that, but we couldn’t handle it at times.”

Akron didn’t record a first down until the third quarter, with Penn State leading by 31.

Evan Royster’s five-yard TD run with 6:15 in the first quarter capped a seven-play, 84-yard drive for a 7-0 lead to get the blue-and-white party started.

Akron’s next series typified the Zips’ frustrating afternoon.

Defensive tackle Ollie Ogbu stuffed Norman Shuford for a 3-yard loss. Akron went with a no-huddle attack, but defensive end Jack Crawford took down Alex Allen on an outside run for a 4-yard loss. Jacquemain threw incomplete on third down, his pass in the flat sailing high over the head of Shuford, who was smothered by linebacker Sean Lee.

It was a smashing return, too, for Lee, who had seven tackles in his first game after missing 2008 with a right knee injury.

“That was fun, it got my adrenaline running,” said Lee, a team captain with Clark. “I had those chills down my back again.”

Akron went three-and-out on drives the rest of the first half, while the Nittany Lions played pitch-and-catch on offense. The Zips were the perfect opponent for a Penn State offense breaking in a new receiving corps and three new starters on the offensive line.

Clark was 29 for 40 passing for the day, the second-highest single-game total for completions in school history. He had 254 yards in the first half alone, a school record.

Clark’s throw to a leaping Graham Zug just before halftime gave Penn State a 31-point cushion.

“They’re a top 10 football team with a great quarterback and a great running back, and I think you can add to that now some great receivers,” Akron coach J.D. Brookhart said.

Zug’s touchdown were the last points Penn State would score. Paterno said many of his younger players “thought the thing was over at halftime.”

“We just did not have any consistency in the second half. We didn’t come off the football on either side of the ball, so I was disappointed,” he said. “But we still won the football game.”

Jacquemain was 13 for 22 passing for 158 yards, one interception and a 40-yard touchdown to Deryn Bowser in the third quarter for Akron’s only score.

sept 11 next year at Alabama. I really believe next year team will be better. I think our main weakness this year will be offense line. We lose Clark but pick up Robert Bolden (QB) and Adrin Coxson 9WR. I really wanted to see more of Newsome Sat but as Joe would say if he was posting on this board "ah your all nuts".
This weekend should be interesting. Syracuse look better than I seen in at least the last 4 years.

Does Penn State play Alabama in 2010 and 2011? If so, that would be a step in the right direction. No one can deny that Penn State plays a patty-cake non-conference schedule. If they played in the SEC, a weak non-conference schedule might be overlooked considering that they would have to play LSU, Florida, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, etc. (not saying they would play all these teams but introducing the superior talent level in that conference). Any information would be appreciated.

The Nittany Lions did exactly what they were expected to do,and that was crush Akron! Anything else would have been unaccepted. Now the Buckeyes standards are much lower. They did what was expected of them also, and that was sqeek by Navy! Please whoever is paying the voters to keep ranking The Ohio State Suckeyes in the top ten, stop. You are making the whole entire Big Ten look bad. Face it, Tressel will never be at Ohio State long enough to measure up to Joe Pa. And by the way good luck with that Trojan horse next week.

I don't think PSU has had numbers on their helmets going back to the early 70's-it's been so long I'm not sure. PSU has a classic, clean looking uniform, they don't try to make their players think they're in the NFL, although many players from Penn State eventually will be. Playing for Penn State is about character, pride, and discipline as a TEAM. It's about the individual making a solid, consistent contribution to and working as a solid TEAM member. It's all about the guy INSIDE the jersey....

All the nonsense on these posts about playing "patty-cake" teams is a joke. ALL college football teams have vastly undermatched opponents on their non-conference schedule as tune-up games, anybody who can think knows that. So criticising one team or another for this commonplace practice is just stupid and shows the posters ignorance.

Yes, Penn State rolled over Akron. But even Akron's coach commented after the game that Penn State was a solid top-ten college football team. I think every team should only be able to schedule two non-conference opponents at the beginning of their season, and every team must play at least 9 of it's conference opponents during the season. Especially in confences that have 11 or 12 teams. I think the BCS rankings would be more accurate and the best teams would rise to the top.

And as far as JoePa's age goes, you arrogant younger people don't realize that in the majority of cases, the body ages, but the person and the spirit within is essentially the same person they were in their 20's or 30's. I hear this all the team from people in their 50's, 60's 70's, etc. These people have a valuable and relevant wealth of ife experience and knowledge, Old age doesn't disqualify someone from having dreams, aspirations, goals, passion or a desire to live life to the fullest. This is what I see in JoePa.

Like Rockne, Wilkinson, Parseghian, Schembechler, Bryant, Hayes or other college football coaching legends, JoePa has EARNED every single accolade, every bit of status, respect, credibility, and notoriety as a hall-of-fame college football coach. Any liitle punks out there who want to disrespect JoePa are only showing their stupidity, immaturity, and complete lack of knowledge about what makes a great college football coach. His record speaks for itself. Case closed!

every team plays some weak non conference games.we cant help if some teams wont play us in the regular season.however our bowl record speaks for itself.the best.quite a few of those games we were underdogs.georgia and miami in n.c. games...for example.we won both.how about a few years ago we played the mighty tennessee with heath shuler.i believe we were 17 point underdogs.i believe we won by 4-5 tds.
penn state played as independent for years to be labeled as playing weak competition.we joined the big10 and went undefeated our second year there.undefeated-untied-unrewarded....AGAIN!!!
again...the main reason for a weak non conference schedule is because most top teams wont play us in the regular season.period!

This message is for tclynch28, unless you know what you are talking about, please shut your mouth. Penn State had numbers on the side of their helmets from 1968-1974, look up Jack Ham, one of the greatest LBs to come out of PSU for an example of it. I hate it when other fans dont know what they are talking about and make the rest of us look like morons.

I really believe psu will be better next year. And yes psu will beat Alabama on sept 11 next year. Anyone you looks at what the big ten did yeaterday and doesn't think the con is weak (at this point in time) is kidding themselves. I don't understand JOe Pa when it comes to quarterbacks and managing them. Let see you have a true freshman as back up who most likely be starter next year and you have no plans to use him in non con games even if your up 31-0 at half? Clark is good but he isn't iron man. I couldn't believe he didn't kevin more yesterday.

Everyone, get over it. Penn. State rules, regardless of who they play or if the y win a BSC. PennState has the largest alumni in the country, fans who are dedicated, JoPa, best college coach ever, he has seen college football go from the good to the bad. We play as a team, do not like our uniforms, do not watch us play. nNon conference games are picked years in advance, we played Notre Dame and gave poor Jimmy Claussen his first lost. At least at the Big Ten schools you get a better education, Penn State graduates the most on the East Coast and only one other school on the west coast graduates the most of their football players and that is Stanford, so there is more to football that's played on the field, we have intelligent players also,. I love the Big Ten, I root for all the teams, untill they play us

@50 and @54: Penn State under JoePa is one of the winningest teams in bowl history. They can play with anyone come bowl time. As for last year's loss to USC, note that USC was, by a considerable margin, the best team in the country last year according to the Sagarin ratings. Florida would have been a 6 point underdog against USC if they had to play them on USC's home field.

Penn State plays a non-conference schedule of Akron, Syracuse, Temple and Eastern Illinois followed by the daunting gauntlet of the BigTen. Wonder why no one respects you?

I've heard that Penn State will play Alabama in the first few weeks of 2010. Any validity to this rumor? I certainly hope so. Now when Penn State loses early in the year, the country doesnt have to listen how good the Lions are and Penn Staters wont have tto wait until their bowl game to find out how mediocre they are.
