Rolle’s pick saves No. 6 Buckeyes, 31-27

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—All the elements were in place for an epic upset of No. 6 Ohio State by Navy.

“If Ohio State comes in totally focused on us, we had no chance,” Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “We felt like we had them in the perfect storm.”

The Buckeyes weathered that storm with the help of a college football rarity.

Brian Rolle intercepted a potential tying 2-point conversion in the closing minutes and returned it for two points the other way, helping the Buckeyes hold off pesky Navy 31-27 on Saturday.

“It wasn’t a dazzling fourth quarter for us, by any means,” coach Jim Tressel said in the understatement of the day.

A crowd of 105,092—the largest ever to see the Buckeyes open a season— sat in stunned silence after the 21-point underdog Midshipmen scored twice in 4 minutes to cut a 29-14 deficit to two points with 2:23 left.

Navy went for the tie, but Rolle stepped in front of Ricky Dobbs’ pass and rumbled up the sideline to preserve the win in the Midshipmen’s first trip to Ohio Stadium since 1931—and keep the luster on next week’s rematch between the Buckeyes and No. 4 Southern California.

“I remember a lot of bad things from last year, like that long, silent ride home,” linebacker Austin Spitler said of USC’s 35-3 pasting of the Buckeyes. “It’s up to us now. We’ll have our doubters and now we’ll have to go out and prove we’re good.”

For a while, at least, they were against Navy.

Terrelle Pryor was 14 of 21 for 174 yards, and ran for a touchdown and passed for another to help Ohio State build its lead. But then the Minutemen seemed to make every big play.

Dobbs, who completed 9 of 13 passes for 156 yards and two scores, rolled left and hit Marcus Curry on a 16-yard scoring pass with 1:24 left in the third quarter to cut Ohio State’s lead to 20-14.

The Buckeyes countered with two quick scores.

Aaron Pettrey, who kicked three field goals, made a 52-yarder early in the fourth quarter. Two plays later, Navy’s Mario Washington caught a pass that Ohio State safety Kurt Coleman ripped out of his arms with Ross Homan falling on the loose ball. Three plays after that, Dan Herron took an option pitch and bounced in off left tackle on a 6-yard scoring run to put the Buckeyes up 29-14.

It stayed that way when Pettrey’s extra-point try clanged off the upright.

Navy turned the game around with a defensive stand. The Buckeyes passed on the field-goal attempt and went for it on fourth-and-2 at their own 15 with 6:30 left, but linebacker Tyler Simmons surged forward to stop Herron for no gain.

“I certainly should have kicked a field goal on fourth-and-1,” Tressel said. “That was a huge mistake in my mind.”

On the next snap, Dobbs lofted a perfect spiral over the middle to Curry, who had a step on safety Anderson Russell. Curry then outran everybody to the end zone, completing the third-longest pass play in Navy history. The 85-yard score narrowed the lead to 29-21.

“I made the move and had enough gas to get all the way there,” Curry said. “But I was dying at the end.”

Pryor then overthrew a receiver and Navy safety Emmett Merchant intercepted and returned it 28 yards to the Ohio State 33 with just under 4 minutes left.

Dobbs ran for 4 yards, then passed for 5. On third and 1 at the 24, he faked a handoff and sprinted straight up the middle for the touchdown.

The gasp from the partisan crowd was audible.

Navy called timeout to set up for the 2-point try. Dobbs then took the snap and dropped back, passing over the middle. Rolle was the only player close and the junior thundered up the Navy sideline 99 yards.

“I’d seen it on film, but I was surprised he actually threw it,” Rolle said. “I was like, ‘Wow.”’

“The guy came out of nowhere,” Dobbs said. “I don’t know how he broke on it.”

After getting the onside kick, the Buckeyes—finally, gratefully—were able to run out the clock.

“This game shows we’ve got a long way to go,” Spitler said. “The preparation starts tomorrow.”

I got on here to check out my team and all I see is all these haters bashing on the buckeyes. Keep hating and underestimating and we will see what happens. There was alot of that crap going on in 2002 when everybody and their damn mom said OSU would get massacred by Miami. Don't keep bashing on my team cause yours can't even make an appearance in a national title game. Matter of fact keep talking all that junk, cause we play better as the underdog. Piss em off and see what happends. GO BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHUT UP BASHERS

Michigan is obviously the most academic school on either of their schedules
    ----------------
Actually, I would give that one to the Naval Academy. It's much easier to qualify for OSU, USC, Michigan than it is to get into the academy.

Teams in the first week not as good as Navy:

San Jose State (who played SC)
    Akron (who played Penn St)
    Louisiana Monroe (who Played TX)
    Charlston Southern (who played FL)
    Maryland (who played Cal)
    Washington (who played LSU)

Its the first week.... you bunch of haters.

At least the Bucks scheduled a team of caliber (outside of the top 25). Not every schedule can be as easy as Florida, ND or any schedule in the Fudge Pac 10.

It made my night, a few years ago, when I was sitting in that bar, in Naples, FL and Ohio St. was playing Florida for the National Championship. Even though I was IN the state of Florida, 90% of the people there, were pulling for Ohio St. (Because Florida is really nothing but a Yankee State, in the deep south.) Ohio St. scored right off and all those Yankees were wallowing on the floor and squaking. They weren't squacking, at the end of the game though! LMAO!
It will be the SAME thing this year OSU Fans! You're an OVERRATED football team!!

As a Wolverine fan I cannot believe I am saying this but I think people need to lay off OSU, it was their first game of the year against a tested and proven opponent. Navy runs an offense that would give the defense of any big school fits, because of their lack of size they have to run the triple option. You can't prepare for a triple option offense, you just go out and pray you get more points, and OSU did. End of story. Pryor looked like a QB who was getting used to a whole new receiving corps, which is what Pryor should've looked like. I'll bet that won't be the same Pryor we see next week when USC comes to town. OSU may have had a bit of looking ahead syndrome, a la MI in 2007, yes history majors, the loss to App State. I think we are going to see a fantastic game and it'll be much closer than last year, but I think a freshman QB going to the Shoe is too much to ask of the young man. OSU by 7. Which will look good for MI when OSU comes to the Big House in NOV and gets beat for the Big 10 title (Just a little good natured ribbing OSU fans, a win after a 3-9 season doesn't allow us to jaw...... yet) Besides, the road to the Big 10 title leads through State College. I am going to cheer my team GO BLUE, then cheer my conference, Good Luck OSU.

osu is in trouble. Usc, penn state and even mich will them this year. Oh yeah iowa maybe. They are in big trouble. Like i always said they are overrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrated like always. There are six teams to be in national game, one is usc, florida, ole miss, texas, lsu and the dark horse is va tech. I love the blue, but i also know who the better teams are and it ain't the bucs. Until the blue is up to it winning ways again, I hope the other team will always beat them. go blue.

CLEARLY! You cant argue the fact that the bucks have choked the last 3 years. We were obvioulsy over rated 2 yrs ago and last year, but with weak schedules we recieved bcs bids, you know the outcome. This is a NEW highly talented YOUNG guys that are better than the prev. couple of years it will take time. For all you tressel bashers "Shut Your Mouths!". We might be losing the big bowl games but at least we are there (which Cooper couldn't even get pass Michigan). Tressel dominates the big ten and the homo's from up north, it is not his fault that the conference is weak.

I love how Ohio State almost loses to bad teams at home 2 years in a row (Ohio last year), lose EVERY game against tough teams the last 3 years, lose all but 1 of there stars and then they wonder why everyone thinks they are not good. What's even more pathetic is how the Columbus Dispatch believes they r the best in the country.

First of all, congrats to the Midshipman! Your play upholds our service academies. Your heart and toughness are legendary! Ohio State walked into a brawl underestimating their opponet. Navy kept swinging and almost knocked out OSU. OSU won by a slim decision. Pretty sad when OSU is allowed to recruit top athletes from around the country; while the service academies have to choose from a pool of athletes that have to qualify thru academic achievements. Go Navy!

Ohio St is maybe a 18 or 19. They don't deserve to be in the Top 10 and it will show next week. They are in the weakest major conference in football. Get them out of the Top 10 this week and after USC pounds them, drop them out of the Top 25.
