ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP)—Rich Rodriguez refused to make it about him.

Tate Forcier threw three touchdown passes and Denard Robinson ran for a score before halftime, leading the Wolverines to a 31-7 win over Western Michigan and leaving reporters trying to get Rodriguez to say what the much-needed victory meant personally.

“It was a nice win for Michigan,” Rodriguez said with a grin. “Maybe I’ll sleep two hours tonight.”

The Wolverines insisted they were focused on Western Michigan—and not distracted by a report alleging they have broken NCAA rules under Rodriguez because of the time they’ve spent training and practicing and stories about a real estate deal gone bad involving the coach and a booster banned from Clemson.

“I don’t know if the situation galvanized them even more,” Rodriguez said. “I thought they were pretty tight to begin with.

“They were going to be hungry to play based on what they’ve heard in the last nine months.”

With Michigan coming off a school-record nine losses, Rodriguez’s freshmen quarterbacks helped the Wolverines (1-0) look better on offense than they ever did last year in his debut season with college football’s winningest program.

Forcier was 13-of-20 for 179 yards, and two of his three TD passes went to Junior Hemingway. Chad Henne and Rick Leach are the only freshmen QBs to start an opener for the Wolverines in three-plus decades.

“I don’t get nervous,” Forcier said. “Never have, and I don’t think I ever will.”

Robinson—whose nickname is “Shoelace” because he doesn’t tie his laces— juked a couple defenders on a 43-yard TD run.

“Robinson’s a pretty good track star,” Western Michigan coach Bill Cubit said. “The other kid threw the ball well. I’m sure Rich Rodriguez is pretty pleased with both of them.”

The Wolverines dropped their previous two openers, losing to Utah in Rodriguez’s Michigan debut and getting stunned by Appalachian State to begin Lloyd Carr’s last season on the sideline.

Michigan hosts Notre Dame next week in a game that just became more interesting because both tradition-rich programs opened with routs.

Students chanted “Beat the Irish!” to the Wolverines when they gathered in a corner of the Big House after routing Western Michigan.

The maize-and-blue clad fans also shouted encouraging words in unison for their embattled coach, and one held up an “In Rod We Trust” sign in the stands.

“I think our fans are tired of all the talk,” Rodriguez said. “They want to just watch football and enjoy the experience of being in the Big House.”

The storied venue was buzzing before kickoff. The Wolverines maintained the atmosphere by holding Western Michigan to a three-and-out and getting off to a strong start offensively.

On his first drive in college, Forcier moved around and up in the pocket and improvised on a 28-yard TD pass on the run to Hemingway.

Robinson replaced Forcier late in the first quarter and showed the speed that earned him playing time, zigzagging around Broncos on an electric TD run. Robinson finished with 74 yards rushing and completed 2 of 4 passes for 18 yards.

Forcier connected with Kevin Koger for a 7-yard TD early in the second quarter and lobbed a perfect pass to Hemingway, hitting him in stride on a 44-yard TD pass that put the Wolverines ahead 31-0 with 3:17 left in the first half.

Hemingway had five receptions for 103 yards and two TDs and Koger had three catches, including a one-handed snag in the fourth quarter, for 32 yards and a score.

Michigan didn’t score in the second half, but didn’t have to after a balanced first half—144 yards rushing and 145 yard passing—that almost matched the totals the team averaged in games last season.

The Broncos (0-1) avoided a shutout on Tim Hiller’s 73-yard pass to Juan Nunez early in the fourth quarter.

Hiller was 22-of-38 for 259 yards with one TD and two interceptions. Nunez caught seven passes for 151 yards and a score.

“Were we that overmatched? I don’t think so,” Cubit said. “We’re just inexperienced.”

WMU had 263 total yards because Michigan had there 2nd and 3rd team defense in during the end of the 3rd and 4th quarters. I was there people ,and Michigan's Defense was stout. WMU was held to only 97 total yards up to the 3rd quarter. So don't make it look like that Michigan's 1st D gave up so much yards. Michigan's Defense is much improved and for anyone that doesn't think they are good, watch the tape. They are much better than last year and the Defense is going to determine who wins Saturday. I don't know much about Notre Dame's defense, but I can tell you Michigan's D will bring it and Claussen will not be looking like a star like he was in the the Nevada game, Believe it, Live it .........
    GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    28-24 Michigan

Well, Michigan was ranked one position below Western Michigan on the Quad Countdown, so I guess it was a mild upset of sorts.

Although it's doubtful that the Wolverines will be as successful against Notre Dame after giving up 263 yards passing to WMU. Defensively, ND put the clamps on Kaepernick, one of just five players in major college football history to pass for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season. Nevada finished fifth in total offense last year.

It'll be a good game, but Michigan will have their hands full.

I'm sure this has been said before, but Western Michigan is not a bad football team, I think this is a great win with all the crap surrounding the program as of late...The guys who are saying that we shouldn't be excited about yesterdays win gotta understand something, we went 3-9 last year. We really didn't have anything to be excited about, but this game changes that. Remember, Western Michigan is projected to win the MAC this year, I mean there not contending for a national championship, but they're a decent team. Its time some of our other "michigan fans" stop ripping apart our opponents, its called respect the other team.

Good job team. Good win over a decent opponent. We will see what this team is made of in short order this Saturday with ND. The focus was there. The speed looked impressive. Again we will see what they are made of in 6 days. Good win Rich Rod & Mich. Nice start to hopefully an improved season.

Wow, very Impressed with the Wolverine win not so much that it was just over the top MAC team. It was wonderful to see the speed and how well it ran in the first half. After watching many other games and highlights its fairly easy to see that it is very very possible that Michigan will not only go to a bowl but now The Big Ten looks wide open. Its hard to judge a season based on one game however It was easy to see that Michigan could have easily beaten Ohio State in the first game hands down. The Notre Dame game was decent but after realizing the records of Western Michigan and Nevada from the previous season Its apparent as good as ND looked I can't imagine them beating Michigan either. Michigan will undoubtedly start the season 4-0 mark it down its gonna happen.

It's so funny. No what school you support if your team wins the first game the next day they are on here talking about winning the National Championship....

Good win for Michigan....looks like all that EXTRA work paid off....and that's exactly WHY every school does it.

Gerardo Menopolito, it is in fact a big win. Not because WMU is great, but because it's the first time in a while that Michigan worked someone over. And this happened with two frosh QBS and during a week of a distraction and and off the field controversy.

Michigan fans like us ought to be happy. Michigan football looks like it's on its way back, and we haven't been gone long.

To understand how low the UM football program has sunk, look at these Wolverine fans gloating over a win over Wesern Michigan. That's WESTERN MICHIGAN. They're acting like that's a big accomplishment for them. LOL. Maybe it is.

WMU is a great team. They are losing a ton of talent, but Cubit is doing great things in Kalamazoo. This WMU team beat Illinois last year, Iowa the year before, and Virginia the year before that. They are legit. Michigan beating WMU, even a young WMU team, this bad is HUGE. Props to both teams.

Wow...disappointed in a lot of posts here....where to begin.

SpartyOn: You're way out of line here. Trying to be condescending because wolverines fans are "drooling" over the win? Go look at the recap from your win over mighty Montana State and read all the similar messages from your school's fans. Forcier didn't get hurt we are using Robinson to spell him and keep him fresh. There is some reason for Wolverine fans to be excited about this game anyways...we are putting a lot of stock in two true freshman quarterbacks and we have a new defensive coordinator, and up until now fans had no idea what they were going to be getting from these newcomers. Both the QB's and defense gave confidence boosting efforts yesterday.

For those complaining or overstating the ability of WMU stop it. They are average. It's not a great win and it's not a bad win either. It's a game we should win against a team that will certainly get a low level bowl game this season. Until the bowl committee goes to a playoff there is no incentive to play top competition out of conference. V Tech, Oklahoma, and Georgia may have all removed themselves from national title contention yesterday. Is that worth having a higher strength of schedule? I think not.

To the wolverines bickering amongst themselves: lets all get along. We had an awful season last year; the first I'd ever experienced. We are very fortunate to have a program that hasn't incurred a losing season in decades. We now know how it feels and its not pleasant. Support our team and spend less time worrying about what other teams are doing.
