Iowa blocks 2 FG attempts to hold off UNI, 17-16

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP)—Jeremiha Hunter wanted to pick up the ball, because he thought it was all that separated No. 22 Iowa from an improbable win. His teammates screamed at him to leave Northern Iowa kicker Billy Hallgren’s blocked field goal alone, and that’s what he did.

Oops.

The Panthers scooped up the ball and, after a long chat by the officials, got a second chance to stun the Hawkeyes.

This time, Hunter was ready.

He made up for his earlier mistake by blocking Hallgren’s second field goal try in the closing seconds, allowing Iowa to escape with a 17-16 victory Saturday.

“I was praying the whole time, like ‘This is why I’m out here,”’ Hunter said. “I was just focused on getting that block the second time.”

The Panthers lined up for the potential winning field goal with 7 seconds left, but Broderick Binns blocked Hallgren’s 40-yard attempt on first down. Believing the game was over, Hunter and several Hawkeyes allowed UNI to recover the ball with a second left.

After officials reviewed the play to make sure there was time on the clock, the Panthers tried again on second down, and Hunter got his hand on the attempt to preserve the win.

Instead of burying his head in his hands after what appeared to be a gut-wrenching mistake, Hunter helped his teammates focus on the next field goal try.

He noticed that Hallgren was kicking line drives—including a screaming 39-yarder in the first quarter—so Hunter told the Hawkeyes to be ready for another low one.

“I just told everybody ‘Squeeze that middle, press that middle and get your hands up,”’ Hunter said. “He was kicking them low all game.”

The Panthers, one of the top programs in the Football Championship Subdivision, returned 14 starters from a team that reached the national semifinals last season. The experience showed as Northern Iowa put the ultimate scare into its in-state rival.

“We talked about Appalachian State during the week. I’m not sure everybody hears that all the time,” said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz about Michigan’s famous home loss to the Mountaineers in 2007. “It’s going to be a learning experience for us in a lot of different ways.”

Ricky Stanzi had 242 yards passing for the Hawkeyes, who trailed 13-10 before Stanzi found tight end Tony Moeaki for a 6-yard touchdown with 13:18 left in the game.

Hallgren’s 39-yard field goal with 4:26 left brought Northern Iowa within 17-16.

Pat Grace, who threw for 270 yards, then methodically marched the Panthers all the way from their own 8 yard line with 2:14 left—going 6 for 7 passing on the final drive—to set up Hallgren’s potential game-winners.

The Hawkeyes gained just 104 yards of total offense in the first two quarters. The running back tandem of Paki O’Meara and Adam Robinson rushed for 79 yards on 24 carries in Iowa’s first game minus Doak Walker Award winner Shonn Greene—hardly encouraging for the Hawkeyes.

Northern Iowa outgained Iowa 354-329 and went 7 for 17 on third down.

With Iowa’s offense stuck in the mud, the Panthers drove 91 yards on 15 plays to take a 10-3 lead and quiet a sold-out crowd—save for patches of purple-clad Northern Iowa supporters who made the 70-mile drive from Cedar Falls.

“We’ve built this program to a level so we can come to places like this and play head-to-head,” Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley said. “We should have won this thing hands down.”

Iowa caught a major break by recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half, but fumbled it right back to Northern Iowa two plays later. A 34-yard field goal by Hallgren gave Northern Iowa a 13-3 lead early in the third quarter.

Iowa’s offense got on track in surprisingly quick fashion. The Hawkeyes went 70 yards in just six plays, and Robinson’s first career touchdown, an 11-yarder, pulled them with 13-10 with 9:41 left in the third quarter.

The Hawkeyes took the lead on Stanzi’s TD pass to Moeaki in the corner of the end zone.

Iowa blew a pair of scoring chances in the third quarter and went into the fourth quarter down by three. Daniel Murray missed a 48-yard field goal, and a 44-yard touchdown pass to Paul Chaney Jr. was called back because of a holding penalty.

Those missed opportunities almost came back to haunt to Hawkeyes.

“It was a wakeup call,” cornerback Amari Spievey said, “and we know we have to step it up.”

Iowa lost 4 games by the narrowest of margins early last year, and look where they ended up. Saturday's game wasn't pretty, but a win by one is better than a loss. Iowa gets better as the season goes along, so this may not be a great start, but it's a good start.

As I recall, Iowa piss-pounded South Carolina 31-10 in their bowl game last year. They have 8 returning starters on defense and 7 on offense. Anyone who says they weren't a pre-season top 25 team obviously has no college football knowledge. They won their opener, unlike many other top 25 teams. Before commenting on something, some of you need to know what you are talking about and have a real argument. This just shows how little football sense some of you have.

I'm sick & tired of seeing these overrated Big 10 teams get rewarded with questional pre-season rankings in the top 25. WTF??? And id rather see their automatic BCS bid stripped away & given to the WAC or MWC. Maybe that will give the Big 10 incentive to play with some hunger and really earn a BCS bid. Ohio State & Iowa are overrated & Wisconsin & Michigan teams in years past...& On & on.. Enough already!!! USC will crush OSU with a freshman QB!! Penn State is your only solid team & OSU is #20 at best & not a top 10 team.

Iowa as well as the Big 10 sucks!! How in the world can a conference have 11 (count'm 11) teams and still be called the BIG 10? Learn to count and you may win some bowl games this year!!
Go PAC-10 (10 teams), which by the way won 5 bowl games last year. What was the Big 11's record???
GO SC and beat OSU. OSU (Ohio St) and OSU (Okla. St) would need to partner up and still lose to SC.

No. 1 UNI is FCS not Division II (which includes NW Missouri State, Grand Valley, Mn-Duluth). Sr dominated teams that have athletes that felt shunned by U of I in recruiting always have something to prove.
No. 2 ISU should have dominated NDSU (which was D-2 as late as 2006) so do not try to compare UNI and NDSU as UNI has a national caliber team and I hope they win it all in FCS event though their pain in the rear AD dropped baseball after last year.

Even though I'm a Hawk, I picked an upset. No Johnson-Koulionus or Iowa running game w/o Jewel Hampton = bad news. UNI is a #2 -#4 Div. II team which translates into a top 25 in Div.I team. Eat poop Bib Dumb Dawg.

top 25 teams should not be in close games with D2 schools, period. Why they are in the top 25 is beyond me they are heavily overrated. my hat is off to UNI i really wished they would have pulled it off and silence the hawks. Iowa consistanly plays to their opponents abilitys and never really pounds anyone. Stanzi is a headcase and the offense got drafted in april (shonn green) the D will win them a few games but i wouldnt hold my breath big ten play is right around the corner and they open with a legit top 10 team in penn st.

The only thing i worry about is which QB will show up each week: Will it be Dr. Stanzi or Mr. Ricky. Also, the AP usually doesn't change it's polls mid week so after the loss of Hampton I would admit they may no longer be Top 25 material... yet. O'Meara didn't look too promising and Stanzi played very stupidly in the first half, and UNI definitely capitalized on it.

Very exciting opener, hopefully this is what the Hawks need to come in to Ames fired up next week, and if UNI can settle down their penalties I think they will be back in the FCS championship.

UNI was within an inch of making it to the national championship game last year, and the team that barely beat them went on to trounce their opponent in the title game. The Hawks looked rusty but have nothing to fear with smart corrections. I would put the Panthers up against most tier 1 teams. They play with grit to the wire, no matter who the opponent may be. Clean up your loose ends Hawkeyes and you will have a good season. Tailback by committee may be the way to go. Use the whole stable of talented, but inexperienced backs. There is a lot of depth in all positions. Rotate and keep all the players fresh. Then watch your opponents gasp for air in the fourth quarter. As for UNI; we will see them in the title game.

To All, Iowa is a good team, and Ferentz is a great coach. He does exceptionally well with average and sometimes below average talent. When he had talent like, Bob Sanders, Matt Roth, Chad Greenway, Robert Gallery, Jonathan Babaneaux, Sean Considine, you saw Iowa dominate. Beat Florida & LSU, top SEC programs. Ferentz is more deserving than any other coach in the Big 10 because of the development of players, the production, and final results.

As a Panther fan I am really dissapointed we lost. Halgren's kicks were low line drives and it finally caught up with him on those final two kicks. That being said, I am really excited for the rest of the season. If UNI plays like that for the rest of the year we might get to Chattanooga.

Now for you Hawkeye fans: You ever notice that comments on the greatness of the Kirk Ferentz era is always in future tense? He had a couple good seasons but mostly his teams have been just average- certainly undeserving of being the highest paid coach in the Big Ten. He's got a lot more to worry about this year besides keeping his players out of jail.

Can someone explain why iowa didn't jump on the ball on the first kick? Only thing I can think of is if an iowa player touched it and then lost it, UNI would get the ball back with a fresh set of downs.
