STILLWATER, Okla. (AP)—Mike Gundy was in the midst of a ribbon-cutting ceremony to rededicate Oklahoma State’s renovated stadium when he heard public address announcer Larry Reece say that the game that followed marked the biggest day in the history of the university.
“No pressure,” he said.
No problem.
With a record crowd looking on, Gundy and his Cowboys lived up to the expectations that came with the best preseason ranking in school history.
Zac Robinson threw two touchdown passes to star receiver Dez Bryant and also scored on a quarterback sneak as No. 9 Oklahoma State beat 13th-ranked Georgia 24-10 on Saturday.
“It’s huge. It’s a great feeling. Starting off 1-0 against such a great team in Georgia, we knew it was a big game coming in and obviously it feels great to get this win,” Robinson said. “It kind of jump starts the season.”
The Bulldogs’ first season opener outside the southeast in 51 years was set up as a grand reopening of Oklahoma State’s stadium after a $286 million renovation. It ended up as the most anticipated home opener in OSU history as the Cowboys returned most of their stars from last year’s breakout 9-4 season.
A record crowd of 53,012 turned out as billionaire donor T. Boone Pickens rededicated the stadium. Career rushing-leader Thurman Thomas made a cameo, too.
Then came the best part for OSU: a victory.
“It was a tremendous day,” Gundy said.
The Cowboys surged onto the national scene last season with an upset of No. 3 Missouri. Their only regular-season losses came against teams ranked Nos. 1, 2 and 3. Despite a loss to Oregon in the Holiday Bowl, they headed into this season with higher hopes than ever before.
Now, they can add to the list of program-changing wins, up there with the Missouri game and back-to-back upsets of rival Oklahoma at the beginning of the decade. Right?
“I would like to think overall that we’re a little bit beyond that,” Gundy said. “We’ve played some really good teams the last couple of years and we’ve either beaten them or we’ve stood toe-to-toe with them.”
With the Cowboys’ high-powered offense struggling, it was a surprising defense directed by first-year defensive coordinator Bill Young that led the way. Safety Lucien Antoine forced a fumble that allowed Oklahoma State to take its first lead just before halftime, and Shane Jarka jarred the ball loose from Georgia quarterback Joe Cox to help OSU put it away late.
Robinson finished with 135 yards on 11 for 22 passing, and Bryant made the most of his three catches for 77 yards. Bryant finished off a 46-yard connection between the two with a dazzling diving catch in the first half, then caught a 12-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter for the game’s final score.
Cox, making his first start since 2006, was 15 for 30 for 162 yards with one interception and one touchdown. His late fumble led to Bryant’s second score.
“Our defense played an incredible game and we didn’t do our part on offense,” Cox said. “I didn’t do my part as the quarterback, and we gave the ball up too many times.”
The Georgia offense—a group looking for new stars after the early departures of Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno to the NFL—slowed to a halt after Cox’s 4-yard TD pass to Michael Moore on the game’s opening drive. After marching 80 yards on the opening drive, Georgia had just 177 the rest of the game.
Cox, who had flown separate from the team because of a virus, refused to lean on his health as an excuse.
“I wasn’t 100 percent, but I felt definitely good enough to play a football game and that’s all that matters,” Cox said.
The Bulldogs got a career-long 53-yard field goal by kicker Blair Walsh to get within 17-10 before Cox’s fumble. Georgia also lost left tackle Trinton Sturdivant to a left knee injury in the second half.
“Sure we lost this game, but there’s an awful lot to play for yet,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “It’s just game one.”
Gundy said he met with Pickens after the game ended and shared a few words.
“He said that everything that he put in this program—this new stadium, this new locker room, this new facility—that this win today was worth it,” Gundy said.
“I have a feeling that he expects more than that.”

The Big 12 was 4-3 in the Bowls last season. The SEC was 5-2. One game difference. The two SEC losses were Alabama getting crushed 31-17 by the REAL national champion - Utah of the MWC, and South Carolina lost to Iowa of the Big 10, 31-10.

Hey Andy the gooner (posing as an SEC guy). Just because you guys get stomped in any Nat'l Championship game you get gifted, doesn't mean we would lose to the same team. When we go to bowl games, we win, not choke in them. Post #32 is classic, by the way.

Utah Utes 31 Alabama 17.....2009 Sugar Bowl. Utes only undefeated team in nation. Real national champion.

Any team can come into the SEC and play one game and do well and maybe even WIN.
But you take a Texas, USC, or whomever and put them in the SEC where they play another SEC team week in and week out and take the same physical beating every week and then see why ANYONE who knows ANYTHING about FOOTBALL claims the SEC is the STRONGEST Conference in the Country....bar NONE, hands down
------------------------
Of course, an unheralded conference like the Mountain West, sent their best to play Alabama in the bowls last season. And The Utah Utes pounded the Crimson Tide - worse than Florida did. Utah should have played Florida. Heck, the Florida coach, Urban Meyer used to be the Utah coach. Look out for the MWC - they were 6-1 against the Pac 10 last season. BYU opened up this season with a win over Oklahoma. Rugged conference - but they get little respect.

since Bud Wilkerson's Sooners put the Big Eight (Now Big 12) on the map in the sixties.
-------
Actually, David, Bud Wilkinson put the Sooners on the map long before the 60's. He began his career at OU in 1947 and retired in 1963 (he would take a pro job with the Cardinals in later years, for two seasons, 1978-79).
The OU Sooners won 3 national championships in the 50's under Bud. 1950, 1955 and 1956. From 1953-57, the Sooners had a 47 game winning streak - still the NCAA record. The Sooners would not win one in the 60's.

Ok, to all the commenters, First, I have been a long time UGA fan and realize that if you have a team that has alot of first time starters and play a team with close to all there members returning for another season ur gonna have a upset.
-----------------
Hard to call it an upset though - OSU was ranked 9th, four slots ahead of Georgia.

the game.we showed that 98%of the first half. What killed us was: #1-"TURNOVERS",#2-"INEXPERIENCE(offense)" and #3-Not being able to "FINISH".I hope the "PUPPIES" (not yet real
Bulldogs) will learn from this game and be able to move forward. This is NOT about "would have,
should have,or could have!" but the fact that we proved we could outplay, outrun, and outman OSU for
almost half the game......."WHAT HAPPENED???". As I said...we could not FINISH.I am not here to make excuses or take away from the fact that OSU beat us.....fair & square!!!! However, after all is said and done,we did quite a bit to insure that we would lose the game!!! We gave OSU a lot of help
that they did not need from us if we expected to win the game.to the offense..."IF YOU CAN'T RUN
WITH THE BIG DAWGS...STAY ON THE BENCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To the defense..."YOU "ARE" THE BIG DAWGS AND YOU PROVED IT".....JUST ASK OSU!!!

I think the margin would have been larger for OSU if the officiating had been better.

Georgia put the ball on he ground 3 times and OSU took advantage of each mistake. That's football. OSU didn't turn the ball over once. There were bad calls but it happens. OSU hung around and waited long enough and Georgia made mistakes. Fumbles, blocks in the back on the return, dropped balls. Sloppy football. If Georgia does this against SC, Arkansas, Arizona State, LSU, etc, they will lose those games too. At least OSU was ranked in the top 10 or Georgia could be facing what Michigan faced in 2007 with App. State. Anyone would have beat Georgia yesterday.
Georgia wasn't impressive but neither was OSU. Neither team should be in the top 15. Dez Bryant is a great ball player. Wildly fast with good hands but he only made one big play. Georgia had many opportunities to win but couldn't convert. No excuses.
People are making comments about T. Boone Pickens and his donations. What does this have to do with football? OSU had a stadium that seats 60k but only could sell 53k tickets. Georgia sells out their 94k stadium every game and they play also every game on national TV, OSU does not. Georgia wins at least 10 games a year in the Richt era and has a top 10 to 15 recruitng class every year. There is no excuse for yesterday.
The OSU stadium is really nice visually. The jumbo-trons are incredibly small and the audio in the stadium is subpar. I never heard one announcement that I could understand. No "big game" atmosphere before, during or after the game. The tailgating doesn't rival SEC schools. It just the plain truth.
Georgia is a national program with decades and winning and tradition. There is no excuse for yesterday.
Nice win for OSU. Congratulations to that program Georgia better get to work or they will be 0-4 by October.
