No. 20 BYU upsets Bradford-less No. 3 OU 14-13

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Coming off a trip to the national title game, and having Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford back under center, Oklahoma had grand expectations this season.

One jarring hit might’ve changed everything for the Sooners—and BYU.

Bradford sprained his throwing shoulder in the closing seconds of the first half. A mediocre performance by his backup, a questionable decision by coach Bob Stoops and a late meltdown by OU’s defense let Max Hall and the 20th-ranked Cougars pull out a 14-13 victory Saturday night in the first college football game at Cowboys Stadium.

The severity of Bradford’s injury won’t be known for days. But there’s no doubt this dents his bid to repeat as the Heisman winner and it throws Oklahoma’s championship hopes for a loop.

“This loss hurts,” Sooners offensive lineman Brian Simmons said. “But the last two or three years, the national champion has had one loss. There’s still a chance for us to accomplish our goals.”

For Hall and BYU, this victory could be a springboard for their most memorable season in decades. It turns them into a top candidate to be the latest BCS busters from the Mountain West and it should shove Hall to the fringe of the Heisman discussion.

“Where it’s going to rank and all that, I’m not certain, but I know there are a lot of people who are going to benefit from the way these kids played today,” Cougars coach Bronco Mendenhall said.

Hall was 26 of 38 for 329 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions and four sacks. What matters most is that when he had a chance to win it, he pulled off a 16-play, 78-yard drive, converting on a fourth-and-4 and throwing for a 7-yard touchdown to a wide-open McKay Jacobson in the back of the end zone with 3:03 left in the fourth to put BYU ahead for good.

“Unbelievable,” said Hall, a nephew of former Cowboys quarterback Danny White. “For us to come out and pull off a win is a special night. I’ll never forget it.”

Neither will Sooners fans.

They’ll wonder if an offensive line featuring four new starters was to blame for BYU linebacker Coleby Clawson plowing into Bradford with a hard, clean hit that left them both landing on Bradford’s shoulder.

And they’ll wonder whether Stoops played it safe when—as it turns out— they needed him to get a little risky.

It was midway through the fourth quarter with Oklahoma leading 10-7 and backup quarterback Landry Jones had just gotten stuffed on third-and-goal from the 1. Stoops let Jones go for it on fourth down, but the redshirt freshman failed to get the snap off in time. The penalty pushed OU back to the 6, so Stoops opted for the field goal and a 13-7 lead, knowing a touchdown would put them behind.

“I did (think about going for it),” Stoops said. “That’s on us as coaches.”

After BYU’s go-ahead score, the Sooners still had a chance to win.

Jones got them to the Cougars’ 32, then they were pushed back by a false start penalty on new right tackle Cory Brandon. It was his fifth penalty and the ninth of the game for the OU line, although two were declined.

Oklahoma was stuck with fourth-and-14 from the 37, with 1:23 left. Rather than ask Jones to turn that into a first down, Stoops asked punter Tress Way to try a 54-yard field goal because he’d seen the freshman bang it through from 53 in warmups.

The kick died in the end zone.

“I felt comfortable going out there in the second half,” said Jones, who was 6 of 12 for 51 yards. “I thought we had a chance to win the game. We just came up short.”

Although this nearly $1.2 billion stadium was supposedly a neutral site, the Sooners enjoyed a huge home-field advantage.

The vast majority of the crowd of 75,437 were wearing OU’s crimson and made themselves heard by hollering “home of the SOONERS” at the end of the national anthem. They roared in the second quarter when former football coach Barry Switzer and current men’s basketball coach Jeff Capel were shown sitting together, but didn’t have much to cheer after that.

Actually, the Sooners never really got into a groove, even with Bradford.

He finished 10 of 14 for 96 yards and a touchdown. On the play before he was hurt, Bradford threw his longest completion of the game, an 18-yarder to Brandon Caleb. It also gave Bradford 7,937 yards passing for his career, breaking the school record held by another OU Heisman winner, Jason White.

Oklahoma’s backfield duo of incumbent 1,000-yard rushers DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown weren’t much of a factor, with Brown gaining 59 yards on 14 carries and Murray getting 58 yards on 10 tries. The Sooners were also without tight end Jermaine Gresham (knee).

BYU was missing starting running back Harvey Unga (hamstring), so backup Bryan Kariya filled in nicely with 42 yards rushing and 76 more yards on four receptions. Andrew George caught a 5-yard touchdown pass with 1:25 left in the first half that tied it at 7.

Jacobson caught four passes for 69 yards. A product of nearby Southlake who is just back from a Mormon mission, the touchdown had even more meaning because it was his muffed punt that led to Oklahoma’s only touchdown, an 8-yard pass from Bradford to Ryan Broyles.

The Sooners are 0-1 for only the second time in 11 seasons under Stoops. With Idaho State, Tulsa and an off week coming up in the next three weeks, Oklahoma should be able to get by for a while without Bradford.

But getting by was not what the Sooners had in mind this season.

Basically comes down to this, horrible offensive line and all there penalties for OU along with Bradford and Gresham out made them a one dimensional running team and BYU knew that. They attacked it in the second half. OU's defense did a dang good job of not letting BYU do crap except for those two touchdowns. All that said BYU wins by 1 f'ing point. Either Bradford or Gresham in the game and that late field goal for OU would have been a TD and OU would've won. Face it BYU did absolutely everything they could do and escaped with a win by only 1 point when OU had TWO of their main stars out. This is the highest BYU will ever reach in the polls this year and OU will make a run back to the top

Jeremy - the Sooners manage to drop a regular season game each year it seems. Last year it was Texas. The year before they beat Texas but dropped one to Colorado. The Horns should be concerned that OU has already dropped it's regular season game. OU did lose to Texas last season, but - Texas dropped one to T-Tech. OU humiliated T-Tech.

Either way, OU winning the conference right now is not good, because they are in a bowl rut. The spirit that carried them to the National Championship in 2000 just isn't there.

Anyway, the team that deserved to play Florida last season was Utah.......not Texas or Oklahoma. The Utes were undefeated and hammered Alabama in the Sugar Bowl (worse than Florida beat Alabama). The Mountain West Conference is stronger than people think.

Now I still love the Big 12 - I'm a CU Buff fan. I take that back. Actually, I don't like the Big 12. I was a pure Big 8 fan. I never liked the merger with the Southwest Conference.

Hilarious post #770 HavonM. I'm a Texas fan and can assure you the Oklahoma Sooners don't strike fear in the hearts of Texas and I'm pretty sure not the Florida Gators either. How do the Sooners thrive in adversity when yall have lost your last 4 BCS bowl games? and last year's was for the national title? Dude, your post sounds like your from the medieval times and your fixing to go to battle. Maybe you can put on armor get a shield and sword and recite that post to people that play world of warcraft.

As an avid Oklahoma alumni and lover. Oklahoma will rise to the occassion. The first game is a wake up call to the coaches and the team. Loyalty to the death. This goes out to all the other teams and ESPN , Sports writers and USc people. We know you hate us , thats what makes us thrive in adversity. OKlahoma is a phoenix , we die to rise again , much stronger, and we will stirke fear in the hearts of the Trojans , Longhorns and Gators alike. We are not dead !!!!!!!!!!! Oklahoma to the occassion. eleven to twelve more games to go. Get well Bradford , you are our MAN. H. McLeod II Los Angeles California - ( In the heart of the beast land usc . ) Sooners Rise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Down with all senseless diatribe that is not Pro. O.U. / Boomer Sooner .

I am a die hard FSU and BYU fan being that I am from Florida and I now live in Provo. The town I come from is about 60% UF fans 40% FSU fans and college football is taken seriously by EVERYONE there. What I do not like about BYU football is the garbage games they are forced to play each year. It is basically 1-2 games a year that people get excited for and all the other games aren't worth going to. This causes lack of interest in BYU fans and football here is not taken or enjoyed as seriously as it is in the south. If I do run into a hard core BYU fan he is usually an idiot that thinks BYU plays on the same level of competition that the SEC or ACC conferances do which makes me just groan. Dont get me wrong I love BYU and I love that they beat OU. I dont blame BYU fans for getting excited or talking about National Championship hopes because 95% of the time we are @#$%in about something lame whether it be our conferance, the lack of respect we get from media and other fans, or the bull sheet bowl game was have to play every year from the Pac 10 reject teams. The sad part about this is the fact that OU has a better chance of making it to the Championship game than BYU does. I have read a lot of articles about the game and the ones that didnt contain nothing but news about Bradfords lame ass injury attempted to say some things about BYU. I read that BYU is looking good for entereing a BCS game..... umm no @#$%in sh!t. Seriously how retarded do you have to be to not know BYU can make a BCS game... I have read little about BYU chances of entering the National Championship game. And the fact is that BYU if they go undefeated will more than likely get the big SHAFT and play some 1 or 2 loss bull sh!t team like Utah did last year. I read stuff about how Mountain West is gaining respect.. dont believe it MWC fans they have no respect for us. How can you do better than undefeated? WTF are we supposed to do? This OU game is BYU's National Championship game and we all know it and that is why we are so happy. F the BCS, F the whining OU fans because you mother @#$%ers have a better chance of going to the National Champtionship game than us, and F the Big East for having their automatic bid over the MWC because the Big East is a complete joke. Until BYU and Utah get taken out of the MWC and into perhaps the Pac 10. BYU and Utah will continue to get the big shaft year in and year out.

I can play the if game too. If Unga played, BYU would have had a better running game and had one more very good target for Max Hall, If BYU hadn't made mistakes like on the fumbled punt return, Bradford probably wouldn't have had the one TD he did, If BYU hadn't fumbled the ball on the 5, they would have been up another score, if BYU hadn't had the delay of game call on the FG attempt, they would have scored another 3 pts. . . . BYU was not at it's best Saturday and still won. Take away all their miscues and injuries and they would have dominated OU.

Did I actually read Post #653 say BYU TRIED to hurt Bradford. Right, a school with arguably the greatest QB tradition in the history of the college game is going to try and take out another teams QB on purpose, knowing that any late hit or rolling up their own QB's legs or shoulder might end his season as well. That had to be the DUMBEST DUMB-A$$ comment I have ever read. Geez that was a supid comment. Sorry, I just can't help it, that was ridiculous. HALL was sacked 4 times and knocked down 6 more. I suppose OU was just showing Mr. Hall the new turf close up for fun. Ity's a tough, physical game and the LB got a clean hit on Bradford....give it up. The Sooners were looking pretty inept offensively before Bradford rolled around on the field. BYU beat the crap out of OU's offense, and that's football. Live with it! You don't win every game.

I suppose the Colorado State Win tonight was also luck.... For all you young'ns that really believe BYU won by LUCK, may I remind you that LUCK is what happens when PREPARATION meets OPPORTUNITY.

BYU turned the ball over 4 times while also breaking in 4 new O-LINEMAN just like he Sooners. OU turned those four TO's into a total of just 13 points. You can call it luck if you want buddy, but in a bar fight, BYU beat the crap out of OU defensively. Apparently all those glossy numbers in the BIG-12 last year really were against really bad defenses after all. In the end, BYU out-gained OU by nearly 100 yards (would have been that except for 3 V-formation knee-drops at - 12 rushing at the end). Put it another way, OU was held to about 280 yards less than they averaged last year.

BY the way, Bradford did play the entire 1st half and was held in check pretty good when you consider he had less than 100 yards passing to Max Halls 230+ yards. BYU's O-Line was actually better than OU's. I guess all those recruiting stars don't mean much when determined unheralded players work their butts off and just want to win.

Boise State is in the WAC, not the MWC. Boise is such a small media market, it has about as much chance of getting into the MWC as Philip Fulmer and Ralph Fredgen do a speed o.

    OU - 2 new DB's (safety)
    BYU - 2 new DB's (corners)

    OU - 4 new O-Lineman
BYU - 4 new O-Lineman and the lone returning starter played w/a broken hand.

OU - 2 New Wide Receivers
    BYU Two New Wide Receivers

OU 10 Returning starters on Defense
BYU - 9 Returning Starters on Defense

OU - Lost AA Candidate TE, replaced with new green player.
BYU Lost AA Candidate Running Back nwith over 3,000 total yards in first two seasons, replaced with new green player.

OU - O-Line just could not handle BYU's unheralded D-Line.
BYU - Gave up 4 sacks and 6 hits/hurries to AA studded OU D-Line, but managed to protect Max Hall to the tune of 326 yards on 68% completion ratio.

OU turned the ball over two times. BYU missed a 46 Yd FGA and fumbled the ball away at the 1.
BYU Turned the ball over 4 times, three inside their own 30, and held the nation's most prolific offense to 13 total points.

BYU's special teams play was shaky, as was OU's

All in all, the game was hard fought, clean and BYU was better than OU most of the night. Finally, if rising to the occasion is a HEISMAN moment, then MAX HALL made a darn good case for succeeding Bradford this year. Don;t get me wrong, the media darlings will still be Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow, but beating up on Louisiana Monroe and Charleston Southern....please. HALL vaulted to the top of the list with that 78 yard drive in my book.

The Mountain West Conference is very good. They won 6 of 7 games from the Pac 10 last season, and their champion, Utah, hammered Alabama in their bowl game. In fact, I believe that Utah deserved the National Championship last season.

Oklahoma is still Oklahoma. A powerful college team in a great conference. They took a loss to a tough, determined MWC team.

I'm a Colorado Buffalo fan. But.......they also lost to a MWC team in the opener, 23-17 to Colorado State. The MWC is definitely earning respect and sould be treated as an elite conference as they play tough, physical football.

What in the world are you guys talking about? WIth no Bradford, OU will not win...hands down!! They will be either 1-3 or 2-2 going into Texas game. If OU is to have any hopes at Nat'l Title game, Sammy needs to come back in 2 weeks (Tulsa game). This loss definietly knocks them down to the bottom of top 10 if not out completely!! He should have gone pro. When Baylor beats OU this year....oh yah, finally OU will be the bottom dwellers....Texas State Rules!!!!

    #742...huh???

"The game would have been a different story if Bradford didnt get knocked out of the game." Memo to #742, OU took ta 10-7 lead 2 secods before a Bradford-led half.

"BYU had everything going there way from turnovers to key plays." Memo #2 to #742...the BYU offense had 4 turnovers to OU's 2. BYU turned the ball over three times inside their own 30 and once on the OU 1. They also missed a field goal and had about the same number of penalties as OU.

    The better team won.

As a diehard BYU fan, I wanted to take a moment and thank the OU fans I met last night. They were very classy and made OU look good even though it was a bad night for OU football. We were a small island of blue in a sea of red so it could have been pretty rough. Yes, there were a couple of rowdies, but that is everywhere.

Even though the loss was tough, and losing Bradford added to the pain, I had multiple Sooners come up to me and congratulate me for the win, and they did it without making excuses! No question that a great fanbase like that is part of what contributes to making OU the powerhouse that it is year after year.

Poor Sammy Bradford's injury isn't the true reason why OU lost it is because the BYU defense shut them down. Last year OU outscored their opponents 250ish-30 in the first half it wasnt true last night. It was a defensive game and yes if BYU hadn't had those turnovers it would have been a blow out. So all you crazy people quite making excuse and except the fact that BYU (without their best RB) and UTAH can hang with any of you fools. UTAH smashes #2 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and now BYU beats #3 OU.
