Bama overcomes Beamer Ball, beats Hokies 34-24

ATLANTA (AP)—“Sweet Home Alabama” blared from the speakers at the Georgia Dome.

The Crimson Tide felt right at home.

Getting off to another rousing start in Atlanta, No. 5 Alabama overcame a 98-yard kickoff return, costly turnovers and silly penalties to wear down No. 7 Virginia Tech for a 34-24 victory Saturday night.

Mark Ingram rushed for a career-high 150 yards and finished off Virginia Tech with two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Greg McElroy threw for 230 yards in his debut as Alabama’s starting quarterback, taking quite a beating but standing tall at the end.

The Crimson Tide began a national title run in Atlanta last season by thumping Clemson, and this sure looks like a team that will be in the thick of things again this year. Alabama held a 498-155 edge in total yards, even though it had to rally in the final quarter.

“We actually played better than the score is. We made a lot of mistakes,” said Nick Saban, beginning his third year as coach. “But we responded better to adversity than maybe we ever have.”

Saban wouldn’t mind starting off every year at the Georgia Dome, playing on a neutral field in a bowl-like atmosphere. The Tide opened last season with a 34-10 rout of favored Clemson, sparking a 12-0 start that took Alabama to No. 1 in the rankings before a loss to Florida in the Southeastern Conference championship game ended any national title hopes.

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer saw nothing to indicate the Tide will slip back in the pack this year.

“They’ve got the defense. They’ve got veteran kickers. Their quarterback played well for them tonight. Their running back played well. They got some great receivers,” Beamer said. “They’ve got it. We played one of the great teams in the country and just didn’t play well enough to match ‘em.”

Ingram put Alabama ahead to stay with a 6-yard touchdown run, set up by McElroy’s 48-yard pass to Marquis Maze. McElroy was 15-of-30, a perfect complement to Saban’s always-punishing ground game. Roy Upchurch rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown as the Tide finished with 268 yards on the ground.

Virginia Tech hung around following the mantra of Beamer Ball, which calls for all three phases of the game to contribute to the scoring. Dyrell Roberts had the special teams touchdown. An interception led to a field goal. Three costly Alabama penalties handed the Hokies another TD, and a long kickoff return and personal foul set up a late TD that gave the Hokies a chance. The Tide squandered another scoring chance when Upchurch was stripped of the ball after a run deep into Virginia Tech territory.

“We kept punching them,” Saban moaned. “But we were also punching ourselves.”

Even so, Alabama would not be denied. After Ryan Williams’ spectacular 32-yard touchdown run made it 27-24—he was given the score after a replay showed he stayed inbounds long enough to stick the ball inside the pylon while flying through the air face up—the Tide calmly responded with a lightning-quick 74-yard drive to clinch it with a McElroy-to-Ingram 18-yard touchdown.

“Everyone talks about our defense, but our offense can do it too,” Ingram said. “We just want to prove that to people.”

McElroy got off to a shaky start. Alabama took some of the pressure off its new starter by going frequently to the Wildcat formation, with Ingram taking the direct snaps. As the game went on, McElroy looked more and more like a worthy successor to three-year starter John Parker Wilson.

“At halftime, Shaun Alexander pulled me aside and told me to take it easy, that it will come to me,” McElroy said, referring to the former Alabama star who was on hand to deliver a ceremonial game ball during the pregame festivities. “He knows about as much about it as anybody.”

Virginia Tech came into this season hoping to do more than just repeat as Atlantic Coast Conference champions—the Hokies think this might be the group that can contend for its first national title.

One loss doesn’t doom those chances, especially this early in the season. But Virginia Tech clearly has some work to do on offense. And its defense took an uncharacteristic beating, too.

Taylor, who shared playing time with Sean Glennon the last two years, was only 9 of 20 for 91 yards passing and didn’t show much of the running ability that had been his hallmark. Williams, taking over after star running back Darren Evans went down with a season-ending knee injury during the preseason, rushed for 71 yards.

“We can get there,” Beamer said. “We’re just a little bit too young right now, but we’re going to be a little bit older next week.”

Leigh Tiffin kicked four field goals for the Tide. After the second one, Roberts took the ensuing kickoff at the 2, burst through a seem, exploded down the left sideline and shook off Marquis Johnson’s futile attempt to force him out off bounds with a stiff arm at the 10. It was the 121st touchdown scored by the defense or special teams in Beamer’s 23 years as head coach.

Alabama regained the lead in first half but gave it right back with a series of sloppy plays that are most unlike a Saban-coached team. On the kickoff return, Tyrone King was penalized 15 yards for dragging down Roberts by the facemask. Taylor threw three straight incompletions, but Johnson was called for pass interference of the last of those throws to keep the drive going.

On the next play, Williams slipped past a blown coverage and was all alone when Taylor hit him with a 43-yard pass. Taylor’s errant pitch resulted in a 14-yard loss, but it didn’t matter when Alabama star Rolando McClain doled out an unnecessary shot on a Virginia Tech player at the goal line.

McClain drew a personal foul, and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was tacked on when he bumped one of the officials stepping in. Williams scored on a 1-yard run to make it 17-16.

Okay I'm going to make this clear to everyone. When talking about the best conference in college....no one can dispute that its the SEC. If you disagree you just don't have a clue about college football. My favorite team doesn't even play in the SEC but I still know its the best conference by far. Second people who say Virginia Tech isn't good is truly on some good drugs. Va Tech is without questions the best team in the ACC and they have proved it. If you put Va Tech in Big East they would be best. If you put them in Big 12 they would probably play Texas or Oklahoma for Big 12 championship. Pac-10 it would be Va Tech and USC in championship. Alabama probably for 2009 the third best team in the SEC and Va Tech got smashed up on enough said!!!!

Hey Lee - I have read alot of these posts and have to agree with alot of what Cyrus has to say (not the personal attacks but the football talk). What is this helicopter cr@p you speak of? For kicks I took helicopter lessons a year ago and found it very easy to fly. I think my 6 yr old could probably fly with a few training sessions. Stick to football pal

I live in the Virginia suburbs of Wash D.C. although I am from Omaha and a Nebraska 'Husker. I wanted to weigh in on the comments about Va. Tech not being a good school. Years and years ago Va. Tech was considered honestly a redkneck school and if you could not get accepted to UVA then Va. Tech was where you went. I don't think I agree with that anymore though.

On the game on Saturday it was vintage Hokies. When you look at the stats they stunk but still managed to find a way to stay in the game. If you take away the 32 yard run and the 38 yard pass, Va. Tech had a net of 53 yards on 49 plays, that is awful. But they found a way to hang around to their credit.

As a Husker I am realistic, Va. Tech has more depth than Nebraska but but I think the Huskers can hang and with their first string beat the Hokies. If it comes down to depth then we are in trouble. I think our best chance to win on the 19th is to get in Taylors face and rattle him all day long. He really looked out of sorts on Saturday and confused. I am going to the game, I expect it to be a huge huge challenge but I don't think it is impossible. I think the Huskers are bit underestimated right now and the Hokies are a bit overestimated. The Hokies probably have a bit more speed but I think overall two well matched teams.

Cyrus, you'd take one look at the instrument panel of a helicopter and you would probably pass out from the overwhelming complication that your 5 year old sized brain can't comprehend. You probably couldn't even figure how to crank a training bird.

Casie -But even that is still not the truth. Look at the Fiesta Bowl which had an attendance of 72,047. Seating capacity for the Fiesta Bowl was 73,379. This was the least capacity BCS game. The difference is seating capacity between the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl was maybe a couple of hundred (Orange Bowl seating capacity is 74,476) thus incredibly marginal considering your statement. The rose bowl actually showed more attendance than it's capacity. Like I have said in many of my other posts, Alabama was the better team on Saturday and deserves a high ranking much like Florida. Other than these 2 teams, my opinion is the other teams in the SEC are marginal.

sorry cyrus i misspoke. i meant the orange bowl had a lower percentage of attendance in comparison to the capacity. i do not lie and am 1 of the most factual persons you will find on these threads.(as i have been in all posts to you) that is a fact, look it up if you like, sorry va tech lost to my Tide and i know its hard to take but va tech is a tough team with a good coach, they play my kind of football and you are the only va tech fan i have ever had this big of a disagrement with. i think you are wrong about the sec and i know you distorted many of the facts but i will refrain from calling you out as a liar because spinning the truth isn't exactly the same as lying. good luck to the hokies the rest of the year they should win the acc and get another bcs birth ROLL TIDE!!!

I know VT didn't get the ratings because I agree it was the least important game of the 5 major BCS games. After all, Cincinnati is not a known commodity to most of the country

Cassie - Show me some proof that Alabama fans bought 75% of the tickets. I cannot take your word for it since you have proven to be a liar. Then again The superdome is a little bit closer to hickville than it is to Utah. If it was 75% Bama fans, that most have been a place of many tears since Utah totally spanked your hillbilly butts...LOL

exactly 72,00o seats eh. I just looked up the numbers and I got different figures than yours. Is this another attempt to skew the stats? FYI....Superdome can be configured to hold 80K seats if they can sell the tickets. Orange Bowl seating capacity is 74,476 (llok it up again). I can send the link if you want...LOL....

So how does that change your statement of Orange Bowl sold less tickets of all the bowl games. It doesn't. You were either lying or just plain stupid. Which one is it Cassie?

Really Cassie - you are too easy. I have been stating nothing but facts for you and you refuse to accept any of them. If anyone is spinning stuff it is you. To fail to acknowledge things like how conferences have changed and how many teams are in a conference is sheer stupidity. The fact that no-one has agreed with me doesn't bother me at all. I personally think that the vast majority of Americans are unintelligent. How else can you explain the majority voting for someone like Obama. If that is not a clear indication, I don't know what is.

you are BUSTED AGAIN cyrus!!!as a matter of fact, other than the bcs title game and the rose bowl the sugar bowl last year had the highest percentage of sold seats. AND the Bama fans made up over 75% of the sold seats with Utah not even selling their whole amount. the "spin" stops here buddy!!!

1 more fact for you to prove your "spin": the superdome has a capasity of 72,000; the capacity of pro players stadium(where the orange bowl was plated last year) is 75,200. so, by percentage the sugar bowl sold a greater amount of seats(99.9%)

honestly i have no problem with princeton or yale claiming all those titles, they were their, they played and those teams should not be punished for being around before others. my problem is moving teams from conference to conference to try to prove your impossible point. miami's titles for instance that were won whilr they were in the big east stay with the big east conference. the acc can't, and officially does NOT claim them. but you try to "stack the deck" against the sec every way possible
