Minnesota spoils Paulus’ Orange debut, wins 23-20

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP)—Greg Paulus’ debut at quarterback for Syracuse lacked only the storybook ending.

Eric Ellestad kicked a 35-yard field goal in overtime Saturday to give Minnesota a 23-20 victory over the Orange, who failed to score in the extra session when Paulus threw his lone interception on an ill-advised pass.

Paulus got off to a strong start in his first football game since 2004, but his turnover on a third-and-5 play on the first possession of OT gave the Gophers a chance to win.

“I shouldn’t make that throw,” Paulus said. “I was trying to make a play. Sometimes it worked; sometimes it didn’t. I should have thrown the ball in the back of the end zone and kicked the field goal.”

Paulus guided Syracuse to a 20-14 lead at the break but failed to convert any of the Orange’s eight third-down tries in the second half.

“We had some opportunities to put them away and we just didn’t get it done offensively,” Paulus said. “And that’s on me.”

Still, in his first college football game after playing point guard for four seasons at Duke, Paulus made plenty of positive plays. He was 19-for-31 for 167 yards and one touchdown.

“I would have liked a better outcome,” said Paulus, just 7-for-14 for 39 yards in the second half after the Minnesota defense adjusted. “That pick, I shouldn’t make that mistake. I’ll be kicking myself for a little bit thinking about that one. But playing football is awesome. It’s so much fun. I can’t tell you the joy I get. To play here is phenomenal.”

Paulus had not played competitive football since he was honored as 2004 national player of the year at Christian Brothers Academy in suburban Syracuse. New coach Doug Marrone, who played for the Orange in the mid-1980s, made Paulus the starter less than two weeks into preseason camp, and he felt good about the decision despite the outcome of the opener.

“It (the interception) was a poor decision,” Marrone said. “I’ll rely on him to make the right decision. I have a lot of trust in him.”

Adam Weber was 19-for-42 for 248 yards and one touchdown and Eric Decker had nine catches for 183 yards to lead Minnesota.

Until his ill-fated throw, Paulus showed great poise for somebody who had never played the position in college, and the Orange’s revamped offensive line provided adequate protection.

Paulus, who received an NCAA waiver to play football with his one remaining year of athletic eligibility, seemed at home after the Orange’s first snap of the game sailed way over his head and led to a quick Minnesota touchdown. He looked off defenders and scrambled when he had to, displaying the flair that made him a record-setting high school quarterback five years ago.

With Syracuse trailing 14-3 late in the first quarter, Paulus electrified the near-capacity crowd of 48,617, which included former Syracuse star Donovan McNabb, with his first collegiate scoring pass.

Facing a second-and-6 from the Minnesota 29, Paulus fooled three defenders with a pump fake and hit a wide-open Mike Williams near the goal line to move the Orange within 14-10. It marked the 10th straight game Williams has had a TD catch, a school record and the best mark in the nation.

Not even penalties seemed to faze Paulus. Despite a false start and a hold against the Orange late in the second quarter, he guided Syracuse 67 yards in eight plays, accounting for all but 10 yards with four completions in four attempts to set up Delone Carter’s 1-yard touchdown run.

That gave the Orange, who were 10-37 in the previous four years under Greg Robinson, a rare 20-14 halftime lead. Syracuse scored 20 or more points in a game only eight times under Robinson.

The game started badly for the Orange. Center Jim McKenzie’s first snap sailed over Paulus’ head and was recovered by Minnesota’s Cedric McKinley at the Syracuse 16. Two plays later, Duane Bennett scored untouched on a 16-yard run around the right side.

Ellestad forced overtime with a 26-yard field goal with 57 seconds left after a lob by Weber for Decker in the right corner of the end zone sailed high.

“This was exactly what I expected it to be,” Minnesota coach Tim Brewster said. “Syracuse is a tough place to play. We didn’t do everything right by any means, but I’m excited that we found a way to win.”

DanfromSH!THOLEMN - still ranting about your gopher holes and VIQUEENS. Man, you need to get a life responding to posts that are days old. I guess a 14 year old has to get the last word.....typical teenager. I saw on another blog you calling someone out to fight. Well, I can't beat down on a minor, so I guess we can't meet. I suppose I could call your momma, but the trailer doesn't have a phone does it?

He said "Air Force played in the Big Ten they would be worse then Northwestern"

LOL you already proved he is correct by showing us Air Forces' record against the Big Ten (5-8-1) which is ultimately at or below Northwestern's finishes the last few years LOL DOH!

Only question is will you be spouting off when Minnesota wins Saturday? LMAO

And who cares about the Mountain West, WAC, etc. It's GARBAGE!

Do Minnesota fans do any research prior to posting?

Grunge states, "Trust me if Air Force played in the Big Ten they would be worse then Northwestern." Do you know that Air Force is 4-2 all time against Northwestern? Can you provide any backup to your claim? 1-0 against Ohio State. Air Force is 5-8-1 all time versus Big Ten opponents. Beats Minnesota's Big 10 record over the past 20+ years.

And I will say it again. Navy, an option team, nearly (should have taken to OT at least) beat Ohio State this past weekend.

Vegas appears to disagree...Minnesota -4 right now. Probably will end up even once Vegas people see that.

You make this soooo easy...and these are RECENT accomlishments. Not 1920. Minnesota hasnt won a championship of any kind since 1967! had it rough...thats downright awful!

    Air Force: 8-10-1 in Bowls = .444
    Minnesota: 5-8 in Bowls = .384

    19 Bowls versus 13?

    Air Force:
    WAC Champions: 1985 (tie), 1995 (tie), 1998
    WAC Mountain Division Champions: 1998
    Commander in Chief's Trophy Winners (AF-Army-Navy): 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989-1992, 1994, 1995, 1997-2002
Since 1980, the Falcons and the Colorado State Rams have competed for the Ram-Falcon Trophy. Air Force currently holds a 16-13 advantage over Colorado State in games that the trophy has been contested in.

#47 grunge is right on, beat me to it, especially the part where Ohio State was without key players in that game. Air Force may look good against complete cupcakes at home, but Saturday will be a much different story.

Happy Labor day Patricia, I see you work the night shift. Rough.

When has Air Force won ANYTHING? Just curious.

Gophers may have had it rough the last 30 years but they have had great teams and (X + 6) more national championships then your squad.

South Dakota State? How about Nicholls High School? LOL kettle-black-kettle

    Patricia,

Your bringing up the one BYU title. Which is fine because that's the only title for the MWC or WAC, but lets face it, the only reason why that team was good is because they used (and still use, which is why some people want an age restriction) players in their mid-twenties while other programs used kids just out of high school. They also struck gold twice with McMahon and Young. Let's not even compare Air Force (sure it was a nice win against Ohio State, but they didn't have their top running back or quarterback playing and Ohio State has been terrible the past few years their first game (maybe because they lose so many guys to the pro's, #1 school with NFL players since 2001). Trust me if Air Force played in the Big Ten they would be worse then Northwestern and would have been absolutely slaughtered if they would have played them in Columbus in November. I'll admit, Air Force has a chance the Gophers are a team that reaks of major inconsistency problems, but I wouldn't bet on Air Force with anything less then 7 1/2 at Vegas, this is the opener at TCF feild may I remind you.

6 natl champs over 50 years ago?? LOL. Live in the present, please. Who's good now? The teams from the former WAC and MWC have natl champs, recall BYU? Certainly more recent than 1950. The MWC beat the Big 12 this weekend. Air Force beat Ohio State the last time they played them, since you like the past. When did Minnesota ever beat Ohio State? Is it a loss 22 out of the last 23 times? Ouch. Your 'best team' Ohio State barely got by Navy, an option team, just like Air Force. Minnesota, a botttom tier Big 10 team will undoubtedly struggle against the option.
Nicholls State is not a high school and they come from talent rich Louisiana. For the last 3 years, the NFL has drafted a player from NSU. The last time I looked, the NFL cannot draft high school players. Minnesota relishes 1-AA schools. Check out your current/past schedules. South Dakota St?

Did you even know what state that high school team you played today was from?

Air Force - 0 national championships, .546 winning percentage
Minnesota - 6 national championships, close to .600 winning percentage

    Have a nice Sunday.

Aiir Force sucks? Care to bring an educated response to your claim? Minnesota barely beat a lowly team like Syracuse and you make the claim that Air Force sucks? Study Air Force and let me know how Minnesota is going to stop the option/flexbone? It WILL be a blow out in your brand new stadium. Mountain West! Update...49-7 Falcons.

Enough about Paulus... let's talk about WEBER'S 19 for 42 and how that's not going to cut it, especially when Gray is waiting in the wings. He completely missed wide-open Decker at least 6 times on basic throws to the flat and on slants. He doesn't have the arm and a natural throwing motion, he can't get it to the receivers accurately and he's going to be the reason the Gopher take a dump this year. Sure, he made some plays at the end of the game, but his inconsistency as a passer is too much of a problem and HE WILL BE REPLACED BY GRAY! so I hear!

This is a nice victory for the Big 10 conference; particularly, on the road versus a team from the Big East. Syracuse is not the best team, but their venue is a difficult place to play. Victories like this are crucial to improving the crediability of the Big 10. Glad to see Minnesota getting off to a good start. Brewster is doing good things there.
