WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP)—Robert Griffin completed his first eight passes, finishing with 136 yards passing and a touchdown, to help Baylor beat Wake Forest 24-21 on Saturday.

Kendall Wright ran for a touchdown, wide receiver Ernest Smith passed for a score and David Gettis caught one for the Bears, who opened last season with a 41-13 home loss to the Demon Deacons.

Griffin, the 2008 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, also ran for 41 yards on 13 carries for Baylor. Joe Pawelek finished with seven tackles, a sack and an interception.

The Bears snapped a nine-game road losing streak, which dated back to a 34-21 victory against Buffalo last season.

After Wake Forest’s Riley Skinner threw his second interception, the Bears took a 17-7 lead early in the third quarter when Wright scored on a 37-yard run. Baylor pulled ahead by 17 points later in the quarter when Smith caught a lateral from Griffin and then tossed a 33-yard touchdown to Lanear Sampson.

Skinner connected with Andrew Parker for a 5-yard touchdown with 3:57 remaining to bring the Deacons within 24-21. That was as close as they would get, with Griffin and Baylor running all but the final 1:23 off the clock.

Skinner, who is currently the all-time ACC leader in completion percentage, completed 20 of 31 for 143 yards and two touchdowns, but he threw three interceptions.

I love how the doormats of the Big 12 can go into the home stadiums of the ACC's top teams and win. If it weren't for the loser Sooners the Big 12 would be 12-0

Not quite. The Colorado Buffaloes dropped one to state rival, Colorado State of the Mountain West Conference. The Big 12 was 10-2 - both losses were to MWC teams.

Baylor actually played well in many games last season and were just a click away from being a bowl team.

Perhaps this is the year they upset Texas. They used to do be a major thorn in the side for Texas during the Grant Teaff days in the legacy Southwest Conference.

I have to admit I wasn't a Baylor fan until Robert Griffin went there. Griffin was our highschool QB and led us to 2 straight Texas Championship games (which we lost both) but now I'm an avid Bears fan.

    Sic 'em Bears!

Oh, let me add a P.S. to my previous post.

I hope this game was a sign of things to come for Baylor. We fans have been waiting way too long for a winning season! Coach Art Briles, quarterback Robert Griffin, and the rest of the Baylor coaching staff and team seem to be on the right track.

    Sic 'em, Bears!

The article above says, "The Bears snapped a nine-game road losing streak, which dated back to a 34-21 victory against Buffalo last season." That is incorrect. If the writer had thought about it, that statement makes no sense, even without consulting the previous season's record. After all, nobody plays 9 road games in the same season! The fact is that the Buffalo game (the last road victory for Baylor) was two seasons ago (2007.)

The Bears are still another year or two away from being a contender in the Big XII, but they are making headway under Art Briles and will cause problems for several of the conference's programs.
