CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP)—B.W. Webb had three interceptions and William & Mary shut down Virginia’s new spread offense in a 26-14 win on Saturday.

The Tribe forced seven turnovers and Webb returned his last interception for a 50-yard touchdown with 2:39 left in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers used all three of their quarterbacks, trying to get something going, but none were effective.

The best quarterback on the field, it seemed, was R.J. Archer. The redshirt senior who grew up near Charlottesville and was a regular in the stands at Scott Stadium threw for 184 yards and made only one mistake—a fourth-quarter interception that Virginia did not capitalize on.

The loss was Virginia’s first to a Football Championship Subdivision school since 1986, when it lost 41-37 to the Tribe. William & Mary last beat an I-A school in 1998 (Temple).

Archer completed 23 of 45 passes despite twice overthrowing his receivers who were well behind the secondary and came up just short. He also rushed for 46 yards on nine carries.

The Tribe, which got four field goals (in six attempts) from Brian Pate, finished with a 309-269 total offense advantage after a start that made it seem like a rout was in order.

The Cavaliers and Hall made it look easy early. Hall completed a 3-yard pass on Virginia’s first play from scrimmage, and ran 34 yards untouched for a TD on the third.

Only 2:45 was off the clock, and the crowd at Scott Stadium was delirious.

But the Tribe tied it on Archer’s 5-yard pass to Rob Varno, and Virginia’s only other highlight was a brilliant drive on which Sewell completed all five of his passes for 45 yards and carried four time for 35 yards, the last 26 on three straight attempts.

That made it 14-7, and it was all Tribe thereafter.

The Tribe attempted five field goals in the second quarter alone. Pate had one blocked, had another hit an upright and a third sail wide left, but he made a 40-yarder with 3:21 left in the half and a 26-yarder on the final play of the half to make it 14-13.

His 20-yarder after Hall’s muff gave William & Mary the lead with 5:35 left in the third quarter, and he made a 24-yarder with 3:50 remaining after Verica’s fumble on a run.

Great job, Coach Laycock and W&M. Go Tribe!

I agree with the comment of SteveC; the AP should red-shirt the writer of this article.

A really bad loss for the Cavs, the only thing worse is the quality of writing for this article.

And what quality wins they were, too: Jacksonville State, Northeastern, Citadel, Middle Tennessee State. And, regardless of the outcome on Monday between Miami and FSU, a losing record on opening day. Not an auspicious start to the season, ACC fans.

Kudos to the Tribe. They won this game outright.

william and mary isnt D-II theyre D-I FCS, which, if people pay attention, has the whole postseason figured out. the only difference is the amount of money they can use for scholarships. the football is just as good, and they can compete with the FBS!

Time of Possession and winning the turnovers 7-1 = Upset with The Tribe defeating the Cavs ...I bet Thomas Jefferson is not too happy either ...but his Alma Mater is proud to go into Charlottesville and come away with a well deserved win & well earned Pay Day!

oops ...at the Wofford at USF game the halftime score was actually 16-7 (forgot about the safety in the closing seconds of the half via the Wofford punter had the ball snapped over his head and he kicked the ball out of his end zone ...

W & M has a long term coach in Laycock and the Tribe is ranked around 14 in the 1 AA poll - the football bounced their way with enough offense and defense and special team work with their field goal kicker making some kicks, could have looked worse if he had connected on all of his attempts ...just got out of the game in Tampa with USF having trouble with 10th ranked (in 1-AA) Wofford with only a14 -7 lead at the half but USF made adjustments and rolled to a 40-7 win ...football is about momentum, chemistry, planning, coaching ...let's see what the rest of the college football season brings ...If the Cavs coaching staff cannot make some adjustments and turn the program around ...change has to be considered ...

We can only hope that this season turns out to be like two years ago when UVA lost opening week to Wyoming. As I said in my last post...Groh needs to pick a QB and stick with him. It never works out really well when you rotate QB's. The last time he did it with Bryson Spinner and Matt Schaub (I think)...it didn't work well to begin that season.

Goodbye Al Groh. It's been some memorable years but the things I remember the most is embarassing losses to Wyoming to start the season two years ago, USC to start the season last year (along with other embarassing losses to UCONN and Duke), and now the loss to W&M. It gets no lower than that. I don't see this season turning around at any point so Groh gotta go. Either step down or Craig Littlepage need to do his job and bounce him.

This was just an embarrassment. UVA needs to decide on which QB to use. I know that all three made mistakes...you need consistency to win. For the OL and WR having to adjust to each QB, no wonder the offense never really worked well. I really think this team has more talent than they showed tonight...if they don't turnover the ball 7 times, UVA wins. Groh needs to get this group together soon or he will be gone before the end of the season.
