DURHAM, N.C. (AP)—Tyler Kirchoff rushed for a touchdown and blocked a punt for another score to help Richmond defeat Duke 24-16 on Saturday night.

The Spiders, reigning champions of the Football Championship Subdivision, defeated the Blue Devils in a season opener for the second time in four years.

Kirchoff blocked a punt that teammate Jonathan Mayfield returned 5 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring midway through the first quarter. He then bulled his way for a 1-yard touchdown to put the Spiders ahead 21-9 with less than 10 minutes left in the game.

Thaddeus Lewis was 34 of 55 for 350 yards and two touchdowns for the Blue Devils in front of a crowd of 33,311, Duke’s largest at home since 2001.

The Blue Devils, who lost their opener for the sixth time in the last seven years, missed a pair of field goals in addition to the blocked punt.

Hey, niceguyPHL, I agree with you. I admire the standards of thug U down in Miami. The murder rate among students is down to near 100 per year. FSU is also to be admired. Some football players actually attend class now. Of course, professors still take all the tests for the football team. Go ACC!

Duke sucks at football, but they especially suck at basketball. At least the football team has some black guys on it

hey TREMONE21.....Duke beat UVa by 50?...in basketball, I'll give you that...but you OBVIOUSLY dont know football. Duke got beat outright by Richmond...no contest. UVa had seven turnovers because of their mistakes....nothing to do with W&M. I'll be ready for whatever excuses you come up with UVA...does NOT even come close to losing by 50. If you were a true football fan, you'd have a better understanding of points and your own team. As it is.....your just a Fan dreaming of National Championships the Duke could win....playing high school ball. Know your team....it aint HAPPENING.

The reason the ACC is "failing" in football is because of their academic standards. If and when the Big 12 and SEC institute some more stringent academic standards, the recruiting field will be leveled. But lets face it, a huge majority of the high quality football athletes from high school are hardly college ready. The ACC should be admired and not laughed at for their unwillingness to accept sub-par students.

What is amazing is that UR beat them straight up - Duke had to throw every down to move the ball. Most of Duke's players knew better.

London should stay at UR - UVa is a coaching graveyard - 5th best team right now in Virginia - think about it!!

Duke won't leave the ACC because of how good their basketball team is. But I think they should because they can't compete. With that said, I'm sure they could beat Virginia by 50.

I agree, the Spiders have a darn good team and they have had consistently good teams in Division II (or whatever they call it now) for years. William & Mary has been no slouch either. I would have expected a better showing, though, from a coach (Groh) who is walking a very, very fine line. The Virginia team did not look at all prepared (3 QB's with playing time in one game and 7 turnovers). Perhaps not the best year for a head coach to roll-out an entirely new offensive scheme.

For the ACC to be taken seriously, though, they need to get consistent play from all their teams against non-conference opponents. A handful of teams can't carry the entire load. The season is only a few days old, so still hoping for the best.

haha.....ACTUALLY...Richmond is a darn good football team. Dont forget they did win the FCS Championship last year and they have 16 staters back. I actually attend all the Richmond home games and their pretty solid as a team can get considering the lack of scholarships and quality athlete an FCS school can get. But I'm calling it now. Richmond's Head Coach, Mike London, will be leaving at the end of this season to take over at Virginia........bye Al Groh.

Oh wow...disbanding. Hate to say it guys but Probably after Duke basketball what is the next money maker you guys got?? I t may just be football. Don't disband because you guys stink, do it only if they are hemorrhaging money. I am a Vandy fan...we waited till basketball season and even then it was not a great season.

Check the ACC charter, but I believe Duke would have to leave the ACC if they disbanded the football program. Better to suffer through a dismal football season and live for basketball season. At least you have something to look forward to.

I am a UVa grad and, unfortunately, have nothing to look forward to, this year (except maybe soccer and lacrosse). We just got pounded by William & Mary and turned the ball over 7 times.

I agree with you, though, DJ - the ACC is rapidly becoming a non-entity in football.

Unfortunately, strong consideration should be given to disbanding the Duke football program. I was not in that camp until today. But this is ridiculous. It's now already going to be a 1-11 season this year with maybe the win over NC Central (and even that is far from certain). Duke almost certainly won't be able to win a conference game in the ACC - which had an abysmal weekend and is by far the worst conference. And this comment is coming from a Duke grad and ACC fan. The other people are laughing at us but pretty soon they won't even be reading or talking about the ACC because it is irrelevant in football.

Mike Tooley is the most underrated player in college football... ever. He is the most incredible outside linebacker in the nation and whoever drafts him will have a franchise player for years to come.
