Turcotte leads Maine past Rhode Island, 37-7

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP)—Jared Turcotte ran for 121 yards and three touchdowns as Maine rolled over Rhode Island, 37-7.

Turcotte led a Maine team that rushed for 274 yards, compared to just 34 for Rhode Island.

Rhode Island (2-9, 0-7 Colonial Athletic Conference) opened the scoring in the second quarter with an 80-yard drive that ended on a 16-yard touchdown run by Jimmy Hughes.

Maine (8-3, 5-2) tied the game 7-7 on a 3-yard score by Turcotte. The touchdown was set up by a 52-yard pass from Michael Brusko to Landis Williams.

Maine took the lead less than a minute later when the snap sailed over Rhode Island quarterback Derek Cassidy’s head and he was tackled by defensive lineman Jordan Stevens in the end zone for a safety. Cassidy finished 18-of-31 for 128 yards passing.

Maine increased the lead to 16-7 on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Brusko to Tyrell Jones with 2:32 left before halftime.

Turcotte’s 25-yard touchdown with 1:37 left in the third quarter extended Maine’s lead. His third score was a 1-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Pushaun Brown closed out the scoring with a 29-yard run late in the fourth quarter.
