48-45 OT win for W. Ill. over Ill. St.

MACOMB, Ill. (AP)—Taylor Rowan completed a 34-yard field goal in overtime to give Western Illinois a 48-45 win over Illinois State on Saturday.

Eyad Salem pushed the match into overtime with a touchdown for Illinois State (3-7, 2-5 Missouri Valley Football Conference) off a 12-yard pass from Kevin Brockway with 43 second left to make it an even 45-45. That score came less than 2 minutes after Herb Donaldson ran 1 yard for a touchdown to put Western Illinois (6-4, 4-3 Missouri Valley Football Conference) ahead 45-38 after a 38-38 tie.

Rowan opened scoring with a 30-yard field goal in the first period. He also completed six extra point kicks for the Leathernecks. Donaldson had three touchdowns and 243 yards for Western Illinois while Brockaway threw for 175 yards.

W. Mendenhall led Illinois State, rushing for three touchdowns and 106 yards. Matt Barr threw for a pair of touchdowns and had 134 yards.

Western Illinois had a strong game on their side of the ball, rushing for 315 yards and passing for 134 yards for a total 449 yards of offense. Illinois State had 381 yards of offense, highlighted by 175 yards passing.

The Leathernecks were called for 12 penalties, costing them 94 yards on the game.
