NORMAL, Ill. (AP)—Walter Mendenhall scored three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, to lead Illinois State past Youngstown State 54-44 on Saturday afternoon.
Mendenhall had a career-high 225 rushing yards for Illinois State (3-5, 2-3 MVFC) in a game that saw five lead changes and a touchdown in every quarter. Mendenhall was making his first career start at running back.
Eyad Salem had eight catches for a career-high 186 yards and two touchdowns for the Redbirds. And Kevin Brockway was 17-for-24 for 283 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Brandon Summers passed for 347 yards on 20-of-34 passing and four touchdowns for Youngstown State (2-8, 1-5 MVFC). Donald Jones also had a touchdown for the Penguins.
