MARTIN, Tenn. (AP)—Javarris Williams ran 11 yards for the game-winning touchdown in overtime to lift Tennessee State to a 30-27 victory over Tennessee-Martin on Saturday.
Williams had 26 carries for 169 yards and the winning score, and also caught two passes for 17 yards for the Tigers (5-1, 2-0 Ohio Valley Conference).
Cade Thompson completed 14 of 28 passes for 146 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for the Skyhawks (4-2, 2-1), who had four turnovers.
The Skyhawks opened the scoring on Thompson’s 21-yard pass to Mike Hicks with 12:22 left in the first quarter. It was matched on Dante’ Thomas’ 11-yard run to tie the score at 7-7 at the close of the quarter.
Dontrell Miller’s 25-yard interception return, followed by Tom Hansen’s 23-yard field goal, gave Tennessee-Martin a 17-7 lead at the half.
Antonio Heffner’s 10-yard touchdown run with 9:27 left in the third, and Eric Benson’s 20-yard field goal seven minutes later, helped the Tigers tie the score at 17-17 going into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Brandyn Young scored on a 2-yard run for the Skyhawks and Heffner matched that score with a 1-yard run with 4:04 left to send the game into overtime.
Hansen’s field goal put the Skyhawks ahead at 27-24, before Williams won it with his run.
