TOLEDO, Ohio (AP)—MiQuale Lewis rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns and Ball State broke away from a tight game at the half to beat Toledo 31-0 Saturday night to remain unbeaten.
Lewis carried 31 times and scored on runs of 3 and 1 yards for the Cardinals (6-0, 3-0 Mid-American Conference). All they had to show for the first half was a 22-yard field goal by Ian McGarvey.
After taking the second-half kickoff, quarterback Nate Davis led a 10-play, 74-yard march that he capped with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Lewis then scored late in the quarter before the Cardinals added two more scores—another Lewis run and Cory Sykes’ 57-yard dash—in a 2 1/2 -minute span midway through the fourth period.
Toledo (1-4, 1-1) lost its third straight home game for the first time in 15 years and was shut out by a MAC opponent for the first time since 1985. The Rockets managed just 157 yards of total offense, rushing for 14 yards on 19 attempts.
Davis completed 18-of-30 passes for 242 yards. Sykes added 90 yards on seven rushes.
Morgan Williams was Toledo’s top ground-gainer with 12 net yards on 10 attempts. Opelt completed 21-of-31 passes for just 143 yards with one interception.
