Passmore leads Marshall past Southern Miss 34-27
HATTIESBURG, Miss (AP)—Darius Passmore had eight catches for 136 yards and a touchdown, including a 75-yard score, to lead Marshall to a 34-27 victory over Southern Mississippi on Saturday.
The Thundering Herd (3-1, 2-0 Conference USA) broke a nine-game road losing streak. It was the first win for Marshall over Southern Miss (2-2, 0-1) in four meetings.
Marshall’s Mark Cann was 16 of 25 for 219 yards and two scores.
The Thundering Herd took a 17-13 lead into halftime behind Cann’s two touchdown passes.
He hooked up with Passmore on a 27-yard score in the first quarter and hit Cody Slate on a 16-yarder with 4:29 to play in the second quarter.
Southern Miss took the early lead on a 68-yard touchdown pass from Austin Davis to DeAndre Brown.
Southern Miss’ Justin Estes kicked field goals of 42 and 45 yards in the second quarter.
Marshall’s Tyler Warner, who had a 37-yard field goal in the first half, nailed a 28-yarder on the Thundering Herd’s first drive of the second half to give Marshall a 20-13 lead.
Just three minutes later, Passmore scored on an 80-yard run to pad Marshall’s lead to 27-13.
Davis, who was 27 of 49 for 311 yards passing, scored on a 12-yard run to cut the deficit to 27-20 late in the third quarter.
Marshall’s Maurice Kitchens picked Davis off with four minutes to play.
On the next play, Darius Marshall ran 18 yards for a touchdown to seal the win. He finished with 118 yards on 31 carries.
Southern Miss running back Damion Fletcher ended the scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:33 to play.
The Golden Eagles were penalized 11 times for 129 yards.
