HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP)—Rodney Landers rushed for 206 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another to lead James Madison to a 52-38 victory over Massachusetts on Saturday.
Landers scored on runs of 17 and 3 yards and threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Kerby Long to lead the Dukes (2-1, 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association). He finished with 26 carries and 4-for-6 passing for 85 yards.
Griff Yancey added 88 yards and three second-half touchdowns—on runs of 1, 2 and 1 yards—for the Dukes, who led 31-10 at halftime.
Liam Coen, who completed 26-of-39 passes, threw for 339 yards and two touchdowns for the Minutemen (2-1, 0-1).
Victor Cruz broke a Massachusetts school record with 262 yards on 13 catches, including touchdowns of 20 and 37 yards.
Tony Nelson, who ran for 109 yards and three touchdowns, scored on a 2-yard run to cut James Madison’s lead to 45-38 with six minutes remaining in the game. But Yancey scored his third touchdown of the game—a 1-yard run—with 1:56 remaining to seal the victory.
The teams combined for 866 yards of offense.
