Texas State 38, Cal Poly 35

SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP)—Stan Zwinggi rushed for 165 yards and four touchdowns to lead Texas State to a 38-35 win over Cal Poly on Saturday.

Zwinggi set a school record in the first quarter with a 92-yard touchdown run, the longest in Texas State history. He also scored on rushes of 3 yards, 7 yards and 10 yards.

Also topping 100 yards rushing for the Bobcats (1-0) was freshman Karrington Bush, who finished with 136 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Texas State had 389 rushing yards on 47 carries.

The Bobcats took control of the game with a 24-point third quarter. The scoring began with a 40-yard field goal by Andrew Ireland, followed by a Bush touchdown from 8 yards out. Later in the quarter, Zwinggi added the final two of his four touchdowns.

Wide receiver Ramses Barden finished with eight catches for 207 yards for Cal Poly (0-1), whose two quarterbacks completed just 10 passes for 223 yards total.

Cal Poly’s Tredale Tolver returned a punt 89 yards for a touchdown.

The Mustangs made it a three-point game midway through the fourth quarter when Barden caught a 25-yard touchdown. Texas State didn’t clinch the win until Daniel Varvel broke up a pass on fourth down intended for Barden late in the game.
