JONESBORO, Ark. (AP)—Reggie Arnold scored three second-half touchdowns and rushed for 121 yards to lead Arkansas State to a 29-10 Sun Belt Conference victory Saturday over North Texas.
Arnold, who carried the ball 25 times, scored all of his touchdowns on 1-yard runs as the Indians (5-2, 3-0 SBC) broke from a 10-10 halftime score to win their eighth straight home game and their fourth straight overall.
North Texas (2-5, 1-2) was playing without head coach Darrell Dickey, who suffered a heart attack the previous week.
Arnold ran for all of the Indians’ touchdowns in the second half, scoring with 8:14 left in the third quarter to break the tie. A bad snap ruined the extra point attempt and ASU led 16-10. He scored again with 1:04 left in the quarter, and Josh Arauco’s extra point gave ASU a 23-10 lead. Arnold’s final touchdown came with 9:44 left, and that extra point attempt was blocked.
North Texas reached the Indian 1 on its final possession, but Koby McKinnon sacked Daniel Meager on fourth down to kill the comeback attempt. A touchdown pass had been erased on the previous play by an illegal formation penalty.
Arnold was not the only offensive star for ASU. Corey Leonard completed 11-of-19 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 77 yards.
The Indians turned in a season-best 466 yards, 279 of it rushing.
North Texas opened the scoring with a 42-yard field goal by Denis Hopovac with 2:15 left in the first quarter.
The Indians took the lead at 7-3 on a 31-yard pass from Corey Leonard to Kevin Jones with 14:01 left in the half.
North Texas regained the upper hand on a 24-yard pass from Daniel Meager to David Collins with 7:05 left in the half.
ASU capitalized on a turnover to get the halftime tie. Marcus Brown recovered Zach Muzzy’s fumbled punt return at the North Texas 8. ASU reached the 2 where Arauco hit a 19-yard field goal with 1:55 left in the half to tie the score at 10-10.
