Arkansas State 31, Florida International 6

MIAMI (AP)—Quarterbacks Corey Leonard and Travis Hewitt each ran for three scores to lead Arkansas State to a 31-6 victory over Florida International Saturday night.

Leonard threw for only 40 yards but scored on a 7-yard run. Hewitt, who was 6-of-17 for 68 yards, scored on runs of 7 and 2 yards. Reggie Arnold rushed for 142 yards on 23 carries as the Indians churned out for 222 yards rushing.

Josh Padrick was 18-of-35 for 177 yards and was intercepted 3 times and fumbled once, resulting in three Arkansas State touchdowns. The Indians defense held the Golden Panthers (0-5, 0-2) to just nine yards rushing in the game.

Tyrell Johnson intercepted Padrick at the Florida International 31 on the first play of the game. Cedric Wilson scored eight plays later on a 1-yard run to help Arkansas State take a 7-0 lead at 10:05 in the first quarter.

On its fifth possession, Arkansas State (2-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) went up 14-0 with 6:01 in the second quarter as Leonard scrambled into the left end zone. That capped an 11-play, 67-yard drive that began after the Indians stopped the Golden Panthers on 4th-and-3 at the Arkansas State 33.

In the third quarter, Linebacker Koby McKinnon forced Padrick to fumble and Jamarrow James recovered at the Florida International 19. Hewitt scored five plays later on a quarterback draw up the middle with 9:53 to give the Indians a 21-0 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Dominique Williams intercepted Padrick at the Florida International 29. That led to Hewitts 3-yard TD run, making the score 31-6 with 4:14 remaining.

FIUs Amod Ned kept the Golden Panthers from suffering their first home shutout with a five-yard TD run to make the score 21-6 with 1:40 in the third quarter. Josh Arauco hit a 19-yard field goal with 12:17 left in the game to give ASU a 24-6 lead.

Coming into the game, FIU had not lost by more than five points in games against Middle Tennessee, South Florida, Bowling Green and Maryland.
