HONOLULU (AP)—Colt Brennan threw for 409 yards and five first-half touchdowns as Hawaii coasted past Division I-AA Eastern Illinois 44-9 on Saturday.
The Warriors (2-2) aired it out against the Panthers (2-3), scoring early and often. Hawaii attempted 38 passes and called just one run play in the first half, while jumping out a 34-9 lead.
Brennan passed for 369 yards in the one-sided half and led the Warriors to a 32-point lead before being taken out midway through the third quarter.
He had scoring passes of 29, 16, 4, 43 and 18 yards. The longest two were to Ian Sample, who finished with six catches for 122 yards.
With his performance, Brennan moved into third place on Hawaii’s career passing list.
In just 16 games, Brennan has racked up 5,744 career passing yards, breaking Garrett Gabriel’s mark of 5,631 yards set from 1987-90. Brennan is now 294 yards short of tying Dan Robinson for second but still way behind Timmy Chang’s 17,072, an NCAA record.
Hawaii’s Jason Rivers also had six receptions for 106 yards.
Nate Ilaoa carried nine times for 46 yards. His 1-yard TD run put Hawaii up 41-9.
Before a crowd of 22,480, the Warriors put up 571 yards of offense compared with the Panther’s 291.
Eastern Illinois was led by running back Vincent Webb, who carried 11 times for 117 yards. He had 105 yards in the first half, including a 69-yarder that set up EIU’s only touchdown—a 9-yard scoring run by Norris Smith.
With Hawaii’s safeties blitzing, Webb burst through a hole in the left side of the line and sprinted 69 yards before he was chased down from behind by Kenny Patton.
Zach Yates missed the extra point, but converted a 43-yard field goal in the second quarter to cut Hawaii’s lead to 21-9 and extending his field goal streak to 10 games.
EIU quarterback Mike Donato struggled. He was 2-of-8 for 15 yards and one interception. He was replaced late in the game by Cole Stinson.
