Coastal Carolina 41, Wofford 38

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP)—Tyler Thigpen threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Simpson with 2:35 left in the game to lead Coastal Carolina to a 41-38 win over Wofford on Saturday night.

Thigpen completed 13 of his 20 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns, while Simpson’s winning catch was his only reception of the night.

Wofford led 24-14 at half. But the Chanticleers (1-1) got three touchdowns in the third quarter on a 7-yard run by Arthur Sitton, a 6-yard TD run by Aundres Perkins and a 33-yard scoring run by Thigpen to lead 34-24 going into the fourth quarter.

But the Terriers (1-1) came back with a 28-yard touchdown run by Kevious Johnson with 13:30 to go and a 3-yard TD run by quarterback Ben Widmyer with 9:06 left in the game to take a 38-34 lead.

After Simpson’s catch gave Coastal Carolina the lead, Marrio Norman picked off a pass with 2:15 to go to seal the win.

Thigpen also led the Chanticleers in rushing, getting 94 yards on 10 carries. Perkins had 85 yards on 14 carries.

Johnson ran for 120 yards on 13 carries, while Michael Hobbs had 101 yards on 18 carries for the Terriers, who ran for 335 yards. Three Wofford quarterbacks combined for just 49 passing yards, completing five of 10 passes with two interceptions.
