NORFOLK, Va. (AP)—Monte Anthony ran for 116 yards and three touchdowns and Norfolk State took a 19-0 first half lead and held on to beat VMI 32-19 on Saturday.
The Spartans (2-0) got touchdown runs on 6 yards from Darryl Jones and 3 yards from Anthony and two field goals from Antonio Gomez in the opening 30 minutes.
The Keydets (1-1) got on the board when Jonathan Wilson and Willie Bell connected on a 71-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, but Anthony added scoring runs of 1 and 9 yards in the fourth quarter, sandwiched around Wilson’s 22-yard TD to Nat Jackson.
Anthony carried 21 times. The Spartans had 202 rushing yards, 227 passing.
Sean Mizzer gained 109 yards on 14 attempts for VMI, and Joey Robinson added a 4-yard run for the Keydets with 3 seconds to play. He had 83 yards on just six carries.
Wilson finished 6-for-13 for 149 yards and was sacked three times.
