NORFOLK, Va. (AP)—Monte Anthony ran for two touchdowns to lead Norfolk State to a 29-14 win over Division II Virginia State in the season opener for both teams on Saturday.
The Spartans prevented Virginia State from picking up its fourth-consecutive win in the series despite being outgained 280-176.
Marcus McCollum pulled Virginia State within 22-14 on a 39-yard pass from Thomas Boyd with 13:37 left in the fourth quarter. But the Spartans rebuilt their advantage on Anthony’s 3-yard run with 2:16 left.
Anthony, who rushed for 55 yards, also had an 11-yard TD run with 6:50 left in the first quarter after a safety.
Chris Hansen was 4-of-9 with two interceptions for 77 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Allen in the second.
Daryl Jones led the Spartans with 60 yards rushing, including a 3-yard run in the second.
Davian Richards had 55 yards receiving for Virginia State, including an 8-yard TD pass from Thomas Boyd. Boyd was 11-of-21 for 156 yards and rushed for 79 for the Trojans.
