FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP)—Freshman Peyton Hillis scored two touchdowns, Matt Jones ran for one score and threw for another and Arkansas beat Alabama 27-10 on Saturday.
De’Arrius Howard ran for 64 yards and Hillis had several key plays, including the go-ahead touchdown on a one-handed catch and two rugged 1-yard runs to keep a scoring drive alive.
Alabama (3-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference, which leads the conference in rushing, outran the Razorbacks (3-1, 1-0) 271-211, led by Ray Hudson with 20 rushes for 170 yard and a touchdown.
Crimson Tide quarterback Marc Guillon, in his first start in place of injured Brodie Croyle, was 6-for-18 for 57 yards and one interception.
Jones, who had not been sacked in three games, was under pressure all day and was dropped in the backfield four times for a loss of 29 yards. He finished the game with nine runs for 60 yards and a touchdown and was 7-for-12 passing with one touchdown and an interception.
Arkansas scored on its first drive when Jones scrambled in from 6 yards out.
Alabama got on the scoreboard in the second quarter, with Hudson cutting around the left end and winning a 63-yard race to the end zone.
Brian Bostick kicked a 37-yard field goal to give the Crimson Tide a 10-7 lead with 2:01 left in the half.
Jones got the lead back for Arkansas. Under heavy pressure, he threw a pass that Hillis caught one-handed between two defenders just inside the end zone to make the score 14-10 with 49 seconds left.
Arkansas increased the lead in the fourth. Hillis scored from 7 yards out on a drive in which he converted on third-and-1 and fourth-and-1.
Howard’s 5-yard run made it 27-10 with 1:12 left in the game.
