Mountain West rivals BYU and Utah had their hopes of reaching a BCS bowl dashed on the same day this season.

Instead of competing for the right to play in January, the 18th-ranked Cougars and the No. 22 Utes are left to try to earn the conference’s best remaining berth in Saturday’s regular-season finale.

After garnering a No. 20 preseason ranking, BYU (9-2, 6-1) jumped to as high as No. 7 on Sept. 13 after upsetting then-No. 3 Oklahoma and routing Tulane. That run ended six days later with a 54-28 defeat to visiting Florida State.

Utah (9-2, 6-1) entered this season with a nationally best 14-game win streak after its Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama last January, but the Utes’ run also ended Sept. 19 as their comeback fell short in a 31-24 loss at Oregon.

Both teams also lost to conference champion TCU, which needs one more win to finish unbeaten and with a probable BCS bowl berth.

If the Horned Frogs get that bid, that would likely send the winner of Saturday’s game to the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22. The loser would likely head to the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego on Dec. 23.

A Horned Frogs loss would push Saturday’s winner to San Diego and the losing squad to the New Mexico Bowl, which kicks off the bowl slate Dec. 19.

BYU enters this game with a little more momentum after earning its third straight win last week, 38-21 over visiting Air Force.

Max Hall passed for a season-high 377 yards and five touchdowns while becoming the school’s all-time winningest quarterback, surpassing former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer’s 29 victories.

Hall also moved into No. 2 on the school’s career passing list with 11,039 yards, 18 more than his predecessor John Beck. Harvey Unga also became the Cougars’ all-time leading rusher in the win with 3,268 yards.

“I feel really grateful that I’ve played on really good teams and I’ve had some really good players around me,” Hall said. “It’s special. I’ll always remember my career here and everything I’ve done. That’s one of the things that will stand out.”

While Unga had 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns last season at Utah, Hall had a game he’d like to forget with a career-worst five interceptions and a fumble. In the 48-24 win, the Utes converted four of those turnovers into touchdowns to finish the regular season unbeaten for the second time in five seasons and earn their Sugar Bowl berth.

“We will look at last year’s game, and take bits and pieces from that game,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. “There are elements that we will hang onto this year, but we have to continue to update and base this year’s game plan on our present circumstances.”

Hall enters Saturday’s game searching for a career high-tying fourth straight 300-yard performance. He’s ranked first in the conference and in the top 10 nationally in every major passing category.

However, he’s never thrown for 300 yards against Utah, the nation’s 15th-ranked pass defense (176.4 yards per game). Joe Dale, who had two interceptions in last season’s meeting, and Robert Johnson, who grabbed another, are also among the Utes’ 11 returning starters.

Johnson has a team-leading five interceptions this season.

Utah seeks its sixth win in eight years over the Cougars and its sixth in eight trips to Provo. The Utes are also trying to clinch the fifth 10-win season in school history and fourth since 2003.

After suffering a 55-28 drubbing at TCU, Utah rebounded with a 38-7 win over San Diego State, scoring all its points in the first half. Eddie Wide rushed for a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, and freshman Jordan Wynn also threw for a score in his fourth straight collegiate game.

“We responded really well after last week. Our energy and passion was great in the first half and we executed well on offense, defense and special teams,” Whittingham said.

The Utes are attempting to improve to 3-0 against BYU when both teams are ranked and 7-1 all-time when facing a fellow Top 25 opponent. Their only loss, however, was this season’s defeat to TCU.

BYU, meanwhile, is 3-17 against ranked foes since a win over Arizona State on Sept. 12, 1998, and 26-25 since 2006 when playing as a ranked team.

A victory would give the Cougars their 200th all-time win at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

damienslc said religion really didn't matter, then goes on to disgrace himself by speaking of Mormon undergarments. This unenlightened soul needs to realize that both Utah and BYU supporters engage in that same practice and in essense, he managed to offend a large portion of both schools. While he may think it's funny/cute to offend, he should take a look at his own family, their own troubles...perhaps a Dad that's no longer around, a drunken mom, a kid brother hooked on pills... Perhaps damien should consider the improved lifestyle that comes from commitment that causes people to wear such undergarments and the improved lifestyle and family cohesion that often comes with it! (It's not a cure all, but odds are, those that respect family and commit to rules that help us do better and respect more...help and improve the family environment...which still allows a favorable football following.)

Let's face it, neither team was really that great this year. BYU got creamed on their own turf by Florida State and TCU (which is becoming an annual affair) and Utah just didn't look that great from what I saw narrowly beating lowly opponents such as San Jose St in BYU fasion. Utah lost in a rebuilding year and I think did well to finish 9-3. The difference is that BYU thinks they had a great year at 9-2 and actually think they are quite good while most Utes fans don't really celebrate this year and think they were very good. Guess that's what happens when you never accomplish anything other than a MWC title Cougs. I also agree with DamienSLC...couldn't have said it better myself. Cougs top out against extra tough or athletic teams or in big games or bowl games. Personally, I think they are fortunate to do as well as they do considering their inherent recruiting disadvantage (mostly white mormons, plus the missionary disadvantage = lack of elite speed, toughness, and grit)

BYU is just pissed that their success doesn't go anywhere. Utah has the nations longest bowl winning streak (Including 2 BCS bowls) meanwhile the cougars are best known for choking in bowl games. I'll bet Max Hall is pissed. After last years game Utah went on to humiliate Alabama in the sugar bowl and BYU lost to Arizona in the Who Cares bowl.

Both teams are great teams I won't lie. Religion has nothing to do with it. Wearing magic underwear didn't help BYU win. They were just the better team this year. I want all MWC teams to succeed. I just wouldn't bet on BYU in a bowl game.

    @ed,

the only thing that i am honestly grinning about is how somebody so dim-witted can believe himself so smart..

in case you missed it from one of my previous posts, my brother played for the u and had a great relationship with kyle whittingham. he himself and the other players still don't know the true story behind the coaching situation because kyle hasn't talked about it.

this, like so many other things, you think you know what's going on, BUT YOU DON'T HAVE THE FAINTEST CLUE. it's a riot!

you were lucky to be in the game in provo (byu played well below par and still won), and you will continue to need that kind of luck going forward, but don't count on it.

In between the fits of moral outrage, I'll bet you can't suppress at least a grin, there, Christophem.

The religion component is what makes this rivalry so darn special- otherwise, it would be like Iowa/Iowa St., or USC/UCLA.

Anyhow, you get all wee wee'd up over a few little jests about your church, but there is no animosity, really, just a good old rivalry between schools, which features silly jokes on both sides.

Football isn't just a game, unfortunately, it is about money, recognition, and training a few players out of every thousand or so for NFL duty. On game day, it is just a game, and the cougs (barely) won in Provo this year, in spite of inferior players and coaches- congratulations! It is a great tradition, just like at 100 other schools around the country.

Did I mention our coach walked away from the cougar coaching job? Did I mention by the BYU standards of 25 years ago, Utah was the national champion last year, thumping an SEC team that had been ranked #1?

The last 10 games have gone 5-5, the last 2 decades evenly split.

Next year we will whip your rear, and you know it!

Again the IRONY: you live and love a school that represents a state settled by these people, and with a huge constituency base of them. You've critiqued Halls and other BYU people's overarching, overgeneralized, insults towards the "ungodly Utes" or whatever, and then you, yourself, make the same sweeping judgments about LDS. What's the deal?

    @ed,

i hope that a bowl win would bring 'honor and recognition to the state and school' because you sure won't.

the only part of max hall's comments that he got wrong were that he said 'all' the u fans and the 'whole' organization were classless, when in fact it's just the folks like you who give the others a bad rap.

you mentioned that you are just focused on 'living (your) life and cheering for (your) school', but your comments betray you- you are obviously obsessed with criticizing byu and the lds in a vain attempt to justify your poor decisions. yes, we are all free to choose, but not the consequences. we make choices, and the consequences are naturally and inevitably linked to the choices..

the good thing is, i don't need to make any more comments to show just how classless you can be because you are doing a great job of that all by yourself ;-)

Did you hear about the new BYU Coed Doll?
You put a ring on her finger and she inflates.

Why is BYU considering fitting Cougar stadium with artificial turf instead of grass?
So the cheerleaders will stop grazing.

Did you hear about the carload of BYU coeds who froze to death at the drive-in movie? They went to see the movie, "Closed for winter."

Why do BYU coeds wear stripes?
So you can tell if they're standing up or lying down.

Well, Chistophem, the feeling is mutual, believe me!

By the way, I root for BYU outside of games against Utah , in spite of the insufferable self-righteousness of the fans and alumni. Same goes for all the teams in the MWC

I haven't lived in Utah for 20 years, but I went to the U of U, I know plenty of people who proudly attended the "Y". I always managed to have fun WITH them, the rivalry was never about hate and it never involved tossing beer! Besides, your finest quarterback in school history is not "un-fond" of beer- the great Jim McMahon! Half your team always drinks beer in private, do you really not get that?

If I tease you about your peculiar religious beliefs, it is not from having given them full consideration as a youth! To send a message in "mo-speak", I exercised my free agency, and became an apostate!
Ya'll always say anyone who leaves has "issues", but let me tell you, it feels just fine!

Now, to get down to business- if things go as per usual, Utah will win it's bowl game, bringing honor and recognition to the state and school, while BYU will choke YET AGAIN in the post season, then kick the dirt, make excuses, and see another season full of promise and expectation fall short.

Anyone got any good BYU co-ed jokes?

Me, a problem with the Latter Day Saints?

Heavens no, I can only admire their self righteous views of this sinful world- being something of a sinner (I do like my morning coffee....).

When I die, I'll be happy with my position in Terrestial kingdom sub-heaven # 17-B, content to let the Godly priesthood members vie for their own planet in the upper levels of the Celestial kingdom!

Perhaps the High Priests will settle the issue on a celestial gridiron (don't worry, only males have all priesthood power in the afterlife, no ladies will be tackled or otherwise "defiled"). Of course, it will be obvious that only the most exalted of the resurrected , perfected guys will be allowed to don the holy blue and white and play for BYU in the afterlife! Think of it, heavenly trumpets and the glory of God in a game that could last, say 10,000 quarters, and no beer in the stands to stain the game that would make the BCS championship look like pee wee football. Only difference from Saturday's game, well, let's just say their might be a few polynesians on the upper C-kingdom team, but don't look for no pigmented brothers in the secondary......

(If you don't know the lingo, just invite some well-scrubbed missionaries to your home for a chat)

IO will certainly pray about the message delivered "christophem":

"if we don't drink, curse, sleep around, etc. like some of you 'privileged' u fans (as you yourself imply), at least get it straight-- it's because we CHOOSE to not do those things. we are free from those fetters and free in our conscience, and i would suggest that the cognitive dissonence you and other u fans like you are experiencing is from the understanding deep down that righteousness is not a burden and your 'freedoms' are not making you free but slaves to your own appetites and habits.

a person who smokes, drinks, and has generally low standards would rather have others around who do the same rather than examples of people, who although imperfect, are at least trying to do better and generally are".

That pretty much says it all. But really Chrisser, don't think too much about cognitive dissonance, living the 'Mo religious life has many more pitfalls in that department than just living one's life and cheering for one's school!

    @ed,

just keep grinding your ax, why don't you-- it just underlines your boorish attitude..

is it possible that you are truly as ignorant as you sound? you put in quotes any number of things which you somehow attribute to me as if i said those things about myself / y fans or you and u fans.

i clearly have indicated many times that there are many great people who are u fans, and the fact that you keep ignoring that speaks volumes and validates my point that there are those of the u fans who are so full of venom that you can't see straight and prefer to muddy the waters rather than bring clarity.

yes, max said he hated the u and its fans, and i have said it was excessive and categorical, as have many byu fans, and max himself now, but you conveniently ignore that if max or any byu fans have expressed feeling like this for the u, they pale in comparison with hateful comments and treatments meted out by u fans toward byu over the years. that is a fact, and only a liar would deny it.

your rant about beer is ridiculous, as if the story were made up, or as if the event is somehow less meaningful because the beverage is jokingly demonized by you due to its alcoholic nature. what is your point or do you even have one? i don't care if the moronic u fans threw beer, sprite, rocks, snowballs-- it doesn't matter, the point is i and many others (i suspect you included) have witnessed multiple events like this over the years and know many folks who won't set foot at the u anymore due to horrible experiences. my own brother, a u fan, would sit with me in the y student section but didn't want us sit with the u fans. what does that tell you?

just keep telling yourself that the fans and players are no different. there will be players and fans who say/do things that are regrettable, but the cold fact of the matter is that on the side of byu, there is at least an attempt to set and live to a high standard. the u is a complete grab-bag, where you have mixed in with some great folks, some real riff-raff and malcontent haters vis-a-vis the lds principles and lifestyle.

if we don't drink, curse, sleep around, etc. like some of you 'privileged' u fans (as you yourself imply), at least get it straight-- it's because we CHOOSE to not do those things. we are free from those fetters and free in our conscience, and i would suggest that the cognitive dissonence you and other u fans like you are experiencing is from the understanding deep down that righteousness is not a burden and your 'freedoms' are not making you free but slaves to your own appetites and habits.

a person who smokes, drinks, and has generally low standards would rather have others around who do the same rather than examples of people, who although imperfect, are at least trying to do better and generally are. it's understandable that this contrast would make you uncomfortable and bitter, and that is why folks who have bad habits try to get others to follow suit and are upset if folks don't join them. trust me, we CHOOSE not to do those things are very HAPPY to not be like you.

feel free to believe what you want about native americans' origins, there surely were some from siberia prior to others coming from other places, and so what? you can find whatever excuse you want- it's still an excuse.

one day you will see the light, whether you want to or not, but for now, i think you should just enoy your cave of illusions, you troglodyte ;-)

" your comments and thought process basically speak for themselves and clearly highlight that you are the one who is clueless. your logic and simplistic revisionist perspective are silly, and i am sure that you know that already but just choose to keep deceiving yourself.

most byu fans don't even hate the u, and only some even respond to the u's fans and players hatred for the y. generally, we are happy to see other conference teams do well except when they play byu."

How touching, another testimonial from an unblemished saintly fan of BYU- a sportsman, true to his church and school! Far above the grubbing , hateful, angry "ute fans" (half of which share his own religion, but never mind that!

It is football, that's all! "Hate" is a pretty strong word, but it was after all a BYU player that used it!

Typically, Saint Hall told a tale of BEER being used in an unholy baptism of his saintly family- could anything be more outrageous than BEER? If Saint Hall's family even smelled the sinful odor of BEER, they would be in shock, and happy to report having it "thrown" on them. Call the cops, for heaven sake, there is illicit BEER in the stadium!

Pity the cougar mentality of trying to indict the Utah fans for something more than football rivalry Neither team is any different in terms of "principle", just ask members of either team sucker punched in a pile or other forms of football "play".

It is all about the "Mo" burden of twisting sports into a symbolic act of righteousness, like every other blessed thing.

Alas, BYU students, carrying that burden of righteousness, also must in their hearts hate the Utah students for one thing- their freedom of thought, and freedom to drink BEER in the heat of a state rivalry!

Heck, those darn Utes are even allowed to have their girlfriends over- ALL NIGHT, or wear a beard, or long hair, or believe that Native Americans came from siberia 14,000 years ago or so......
