Throughout the year, TCU has managed to avoid the distractions of all the BCS talk and simply focus on the next game on its schedule.

The only team standing in its way of a perfect regular season and a possible BCS berth is a New Mexico squad coming off its first victory of the season.

The fourth-ranked Horned Frogs look to avoid a letdown and win the Mountain West Conference title outright when they host the Lobos on Saturday.

With a No. 4 ranking in the BCS, TCU (11-0, 7-0) is a likely candidate for one of the top bowl games. A loss in its finale, though, could leave sixth-ranked Boise State with a BCS berth, as usually only one team from a non-BCS conference receives a bid for one of the top bowls.

“(We) see what’s ahead of us,” quarterback Andy Dalton said after last Saturday’s 45-10 win over Wyoming. “If we win next week, we get a shot at a big bowl. It’s motivation for us. We’re trying to play our best each week. Hopefully, we’ll impress someone.”

While the Horned Frogs are using it as motivation, they’re not getting caught looking too far ahead.

“This team has done a great job blocking out all distractions,” defensive lineman Jerry Hughes said. “We’re all focused on winning the next game. … We’ve just got to take care of business now. When you start looking too far into the future, things start to get away from you.”

TCU doesn’t want to get caught thinking about its upcoming bowl possibilities because it still has a lot riding on this game.

The Frogs have a one-game lead over No. 18 BYU and 22nd-ranked Utah in the MWC and are hoping to win the conference title outright. TCU is also trying to win 12 games for the second time in school history. The 1935 national championship team finished 12-1.

“I’m glad to see everything’s clicking,” said Dalton, who has thrown 12 touchdown passes to two interceptions over the last six games. “For these seniors, for this program, for this school, it’s been a lot of fun this whole year.”

These days, pretty much everything is working for a team that boasts the fifth-ranked scoring offense in the Football Bowl Subdivision (39.7 points per game) and the sixth-ranked scoring defense (12.6).

The Frogs have racked up more than 500 yards of offense in each of the last four weeks and have outscored opponents 278-63 over the last six contests. Led by running backs Matthew Tucker and Joseph Turner, TCU is averaging 345.8 yards on the ground over the last four games.

This high-powered offense tries to continue its surge against a New Mexico team that has the 13th-worst scoring defense in the FBS at 34.5.

The Frogs, who won 26-3 at New Mexico last season, have had little trouble scoring on the Lobos lately, averaging 34.8 points in winning the four meetings since joining the MWC in 2005.

While the offense has played well, TCU’s defense has dominated the series lately, limiting New Mexico to 305 yards and three points in the last two meetings combined.

The Lobos (1-10, 1-6) are coming off last Saturday’s thrilling 29-27 win over Colorado State, snapping a 14-game losing streak.

After forcing the Rams to punt, New Mexico gained 44 yards in 1:10 to set up James Aho’s 27-yard field goal with 12 seconds left.

“It’s been a long time coming and it’s been a long year, but as I’ve said many times after some tough losses, I haven’t been more proud of a team than this team,” coach Mike Locksley said.

New Mexico has lost nine straight on the road, and ending that skid against TCU won’t be easy. The Frogs have won 13 in a row at Amon G. Carter Stadium and 55 of their last 61 at home.

BSU and TCU are two great teams.

BSU has a really good chance of beating the BCS conference team, Iowa, in the Fiesta Bowl and TCU has a really good chance of beating the BCS conference team, Georgia Tech, in the Orange Bowl.

That's why those games won't happen.

It looks like the Bowl Championship Series is going to take the cowards way out and have BSU and TCU play each other in the Fiesta Bowl.

Whoever wins I can already see the spin for next year: "Sure XXX won the Fiesta Bowl, but they didn't have to play a "BCS conference class competitor".

The rulers of the BCS "privileged conference" system are complete chickensh*ts.

#164 - Hey...do you even check strength of schedule ratings before making comments like you just did.
Schedule strength as of Nov 23. Doesn't include Florida and Auburn game for Bama so they should move up. It doesn't include Florida whipping FSU or their Bama game upcoming either. Can see at: http://www.tellshowbcs.com/SOS.html
Florida schedule strength is 30th. Bama is 15th and Texas is 26th. Cincy is 61st and TCU is 38th. Boise State is at 92nd on schedule strength. This is as of Nov 23rd prior to Bama playing Auburn and Florida so Bama & Florida will both move up.
Look forward to Saturday and the real NC game.
TCU is lower than the top 3 and Bama is 15th, (Texas is 26th) not including playing Auburn on their SOS (a win by the way). This shoots your question of "How can three teams with strengths of schedule between 30 and 50 be top in Nation?" right in the arze. Florida is the only one between 30 and 50 at 30th...that being said...Florida in my book ended up number 1 last year should remain number one until someone knocks them off. If Slippery Rock State U. finished the prior season at number one they should start the new season at number one and stay there until whipped.
    Roll Tide!

Remeber when all of this started and then #1 ranked Miami travelled to play that lowly ranked team called BYU and went home defeated? Wow, the #1 team in the nation, a lowly WAC team. Who could have ever thought. Since then the controversy has never stopped/ Not to mention that same BYU team went on to beat the Washington Huskies who were at their prime then and conference champions many time.

It is why we play the game, any team can win on any given day. So lets play the BCS by the rankings, not ratings. Besides, giving Boise and TCU a chance at fame might get more viewership than people think, from the people that want them to succeed to the people that want so badly to see them fail. Sounds like great ratings to me.

jake z, johnny_winter,gushed "TCU can play with anyone this year." TCU's strength of schedule is 91st out of 119 teams, according to Sagarin. How would jake z perceive whether "TCU can play with anyone"?

smfoushee@yahoo.com dishonestly giggled "TCU beat Clemson, Utah and BYU. They were the only undefeated team to have beaten three current Top 25 teams. But don't let facts get in the way of your fun." Utah is not ranked by AP this week. Utah is barely ranked at 25th by USA Today. It does not deserve to be ranked, because it played an easy schedule and defeated zero ranked teams. Furthermore, Clemson is not ranked by USA Today or Harris, which are used to determine BCS rankings. "But don't let facts get in the way of your fun."

tddriver7876@sbcglobal.net farcically claimed "TCU has to be the best team in the country. Just look at what they have done away from home on the road. They beat three teams ranked in the top 25". Check rankings and decide whether you want to giggle that again.

randyo, randyosborn03@yahoo.com, pathetically lied "Fact: Wisely, Tech removed TCU from their schedule". He knows that ABC asked Texas Tech and Texas to move their game to the third week, because ABC perceives that can attract a national audience and that Tech asked TCU to move their game to 2011.

I called for a moratorium on lies by twerpish fans of lowly TCU. They refuse to cease lying.

JohnD politely disconcurred with me "Texas does not want to do anything but a home game or possibly a two home games for 1 which is pretty ridiculous. Even a game at Jerry World would be a veritable home game for Texas with all the Texas T-shirt fans.
As for Boise, I think they are trying to just get a game under any circumstances."

JohnD, Texas already forfeits a home game by playing Oklahoma in Dallas. It will not forfeit another and will not play two games in metroplex. Annually forfeiting a home game impels Texas to play most of its nonconference games at home. However, Texas traveled to lowly Wyoming to play this season. How many lowly teams should Texas entertain?

JohnD, media announced weeks ago that UCLA has an open date next season. Why has Boise State's athletic director, who pitifully hired a public relations firm to giggle about lowly Boise State, not bothered to publicly challenge UCLA to play? Furthermore, Boise State demands an extortionary fee to play on the road. Virginia Tech is playing Boise State next year. It had to pay Boise State $1.6 million to sashay to Virginia. Why would teams from strong conferences pay $1.6 million to it instead of $400,000 to its usual opponents from lowly conferences?

Why yes, randyo, I am talking about (11-0) Utah that beat Bama in the sugar bowl, but I'm also talking about (12-0) Hawaii, that got their faces stepped on by Georgia a year earlier, ergo an inflated record doesn't usually mean much if you did it in a weak conference. I think Utah was more than just another inflated team, but I also feel if they did it week in and week out in the SEC they wouldn't have come out undefeated. There were many variables Bama faced in the sugar bowl, if any had been different, I honestly think it would be a different game. For instance, if they played the same team Florida played in the SEC championship, they would have gotten beat.

it is too bad they can't play in some sort of tournament.however,it is what it is. i almost forgot, cincy is good also.it is easy for people to sit at home and watch games on tv and somehow get to thinking they are experts on college football.well, i don't think so!you just enjoy bashing teams other than your own.try to enjoy the game
for what it is and stop trying to put your own misguided spin on things. hook 'em horns!

The BCS committee knows what they are doing. They are setting up a team like this to take a huge fall. Look at TCU's games this season, who have they played? The answer is NOBODY. I just feel bad fo the kids on that team, they will get paired up against a powerhouse and they will get crushed. This time next year people will say "TCU who"?

to the post that said SEC fans are crying I ask you how you figure that?? the SEC has 10 teams going to Bowl games so there will be no crying. And I hope that TCU lands in the Sugar Bowl because the fans from FT Worth will have a short trip and be able to represent BUT most of all so that either Florida or Alabama can Kick that azz back to FT Worth and end this talk once and for all. When you have your chance at the big boys like Texas and Oklahoma the last 2 years and lose that is why people say you dont belong there. I think TCU is a good team but they will lose

    jesusrocks43 # 162.

The Frogs are still young and return a lot especially on offense next year.

Yes, we will hear from them, too.

Looking forward to playing TCU in 2011. My team had a game lined up for next year, but it was cancelled due to Texas Tech/Texas game moved to a different week.

    Wreck 'em Tech!!

I actually like TCU, I'm a Bama fan. I don't personally know what should happen with the frogs, given the current system and all. I certainly think the Fla. vs Bama winner should be in the championship game those two teams have beaten the likes of; Tenn, Georgia, Ole miss, South Carolina, LSU. If any of these teams are doubted due to their records, play them, hahaha.

Texas is a traditional power, they have a great team, and a great QB, and they are in a tough conf. that may be having a bit of a down year, So should Texas be jumped? I don't think Cincy stacks up to the other undefeated teams, so I think Boise should play TCU for a share of the national championship, the winner of that game can't be denied a share. If Texas loses to Nebraska, then TCU should play the winner of Bama/Fla., and Boise and Cincy should play for a share. The way I view the undefeateds top to bottom right now are; Florida, Bama, Texas, TCU, Boise, and Cincy. I'd like to think Bama is better than Florida, but I'm afraid that's not true, we'll know in a week.

not one of the top three "ranked" teams has proven yet that they belong where they are. How can three teams with strengths of schedule between 30 and 50 be top in Nation? this years Championship will be a joke...once again. I would love to see TCU and Oregon go at it...The SEC would see what true team speed is.

To all you crybaby sec fans you all sound like 2yr olds, my team beat more ranked teams than your team &we beat this team by more points than your team did. The only thing that matters is who is number 1 after the Rose Bowl & that will be TXor FL because Bama is a joke. And what conference was that team that spanked Bama in the Sugar Bowl from?

"TCU can play with anyone this year" cracks me up. So easy to say when you haven't done it...and know that you won't have too either. There is only one team in the top ten right now who also has a top ten Strength of Schedule...only one. They have played ranked teams in all but a couple of their games, and two of those were non confeance games, And they still have to beat a top 12 team next week to win the conference. Seriously they have had to prove it against 7 ranked oppenents...with one to go. Exactly what has TCU proven? Only that they can beat a couple of top 30 teams. Doesn't even compare...So while I can show proof of my teams ability...all you can do is talk about "How great you are" Oregon is doing it with a secondary consisting of sophmores and freshmen, a new line on both sides of the ball...new coach, most are coming back next year....think we will even here about the unproven TCU team next year?

I don't hate the frogs at all. I will question the fact though about "having to be a really good team to be undefeated. That is not a fact. You only have to be better then the people in your conference...and play weak teams before conference play begins. Undefeated is great....but it should be based on strength of conference

TCU can play with anyone this year. The may be the fastest team in NCAA this year.

BCS only allows 1 non-BCS team-- and only agreed to that to avoid litigation.

Love to see TCU play the loser of the SEC Championship (assuming Texas plays for championship). NMore likely they will play against someone like Penn St or Iowa.

But there is too much $$ to be lost by the 6 BCS Conferences to let a non-BCS team play in the championship.

BCS will do a secret rules changes if Texas loses in Big 12 Championship and mysteriously Cincinnati will leap TCU in BCS rankings to keep it an all BCS chamionship.

Due to the BCS bs, we will constantly have the argument about "who deserves a shot" at the title. MWC teams should not be denied a chance. The fact is, the Utes broke into the BCS twice in the past 5 years, and won both games handily. Last year's Sugar Bowl wasn't a fluke. Alabama had been ranked #1 for weeks, and yet they were dominated by the Utes. TCU has had a hell of a season. They crushed every team they played. The solution isn't to put them into another conference and then give them a shot. Give them a shot this year!

Why all the hate towards the frogs? Boise State plays nobody every year and they're up there all the time. What is the BCS gonna do? Put two undefeated teams lower than the top 10? Come on!! You have be to at least really good to be undefeated. Also, Texas, your schedule is a joke. ULM, UTEP, UCF, Wyoming? Are you kidding me? Granted Virginia isn't very good, but at least the Frogs were willing to travel to Clemson (in the ACC championship game). Texas has played two teams that have been ranked all YEAR!!! OU and OSU. Ok, the Frogs have beaten BYU, Utah, and Clemson. All three are top 25. (Utah drops out this week and so does Clemson but its not like OU is anywhere closed to being ranked anymore.) Plus OSU is clearly not that good anyway. So, Texas fans, don't get your panties in a bundle just because the Frogs are just as good as you.
    Go Frogs.
