Case Keenum and Houston appeared to hit a major bump in their road to the Conference USA title game, but another superb passing performance coupled with a fortuitous loss by a rival put them back in control of the West Division.

Keenum will try to help the No. 25 Cougars clinch a spot in the conference championship game Saturday night when they host Rice in the matchup for the Bayou Bucket.

The Cougars (9-2, 5-2) suffered a seemingly major setback Nov. 14, falling 37-32 at Central Florida. However, they rebounded in strong fashion last week as Keenum passed for 405 yards and five touchdowns in a 55-14 win over Memphis.

That combined with SMU’s 34-31 loss at Marshall gave Houston control of the division since it holds the tiebreaker on the Mustangs.

“We felt that we haven’t played our best football game yet and honestly I’d say that we’re still striving for that,” said Keenum, who set a team record with 94 TD passes, surpassing David Klingler’s 91.

The junior leads the nation with 4,599 passing yards and is tied with Stephen F. Austin’s Jeremy Moses with 36 touchdowns, while only getting intercepted six times.

Keenum’s outstanding season has earned him a nomination for the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the nation’s top quarterback. He’s up against Colt McCoy of Texas and Florida’s Tim Tebow - the winner of the 2007 O’Brien and Heisman Trophy awards.

“It’s going to be an honor to be there with those guys,” Keenum said. “I look up to Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow not only as football players but the men they are off the field. It’s going to be a special honor for me.”

Keenum can also get Houston back to the Conference USA championship game for the first time since 2006, when it beat Southern Mississippi at home.

If Houston can beat Rice (2-9, 2-5), it’ll clinch the West and set up a Dec. 5 title matchup against either reigning champion East Carolina or Southern Mississippi, teams that will meet earlier Saturday to determine the East winner.

The conference champion will clinch a spot in the Liberty Bowl on Jan. 2.

The Cougars will likely make a run at a bowl appearance behind Keenum, who has three of the top seven receivers in the conference in junior James Cleveland and sophomores Patrick Edwards and Tyron Carrier. The trio have combined for 224 catches, 2,672 yards and 21 scores.

“We have enough to be focused on this week,” coach Kevin Sumlin said. “This week is all about getting the Bucket back.”

Houston holds a 25-10 advantage on Rice for the Bucket, but lost last year’s meeting 56-42 on Nov. 29 after winning the previous three.

The Owls might be primed for an upset after rallying for wins in each of their last two games following nine straight losses to start the season.

They forced six turnovers and got three touchdowns from running back Charles Ross with two coming in the fourth quarter to erase a 12-point deficit and beat Texas-El Paso 30-29 last Saturday. That came a week after Rice fell behind by 14 points in the first quarter before rallying for a 28-20 win over Tulane.

“For two weeks in a row, we’ve sure started slow but we’ve ended well,” coach David Bailiff said. “It’s been a point of emphasis getting a fast start. These last couple of weeks we’ll have to keep emphasizing it as long as we keep winning football games.

“Our players never quit.”

Bailiff may opt to rely on the running game again after Rice accumulated a season-high 172 against the Miners with sophomore Tyler Smith leading the team with a career-high 127. Smith has 315 rushing yards and a touchdown on the season, while Ross has 386 and nine, respectively.

“Ultimately we’re going to try to split with him and Charles,” Bailiff said. “Charles was having some respiratory problems and that’s one of those moments where Tyler took advantage of an opportunity.”

Nick Fanuzzi is coming off one of his worst performances of the season. The sophomore completed 8 of 17 passes for 55 yards and an interception last week.

Our fans are just overzealous....that after all is the nature of a fan....short for fanatic....

We are just happy to get some national recognition....and some of our fans feel that our team has been overlooked alot....and that is our fault....just as some of the sports people started singing our praises and sticking out their necks and saying how good we are ....we lose to UTEP.... after that no sports person wants to stick their neck out again....lucky for them....cause we lost to UCF....that loss hurt... Our team just needs to learn to play intense every week..... when you got teams gunning for you....they are looking to make you lose.... our team learned that ....

We are just overzealous fans who want to thump our chest and say we may be cougar high but we are nationally ranked and have respect...

I told some freinds of mine....all of us are U of H alum....earlier this year ... that this year we were to young and inexperienced to be a top 10 team.... next year we will be....but I fear that we will get the Boise State Bug....No great teams to play against...

So my wish list is to play a great team in the bowl... .....LSU would fit it right...Win ..... Finish at 12-2 and start next year at no...10...

That would give Houston a chance to be a BSC buster....and give Keenum a chance at the Heisman next year....

Then I hope.... We get some reputable programs who want to play us... and hope we win em..

BTW...I did go to three U of H football games this year....and they all were alot of fun.... and at the end of the day...it is about having fun....it is entertainment...alot of people forget that...

So on behalf of all my U of H brethren who have been overzealous and think we are a top 3 team... well let us fantasize and just say to us .....maybe next year if you go undeafeted.... but then that would be fun....in a BSC bowl....would we win or get blown out..... hmmm tune in next year for all the fun...

Which ever team you support good luck to them as long as they dont play U of H....and if it is Texas...
well.... I will say in the true fan spirit of U of H.... they are lucky we dont play em anymore.... ha ha...

    Keenum is a great player.
Houston is a GOOD team. I would put them in the top 25-30, not top 20.
The thing about Houston that bothers me is the outrageous statements that some of their fans make on a daily basis.
I dont think Conference USA is underrated. East Carolina and Houston are the top two, but can not beat middle of the pack teams from the SEC, Big 10, or PAC 10.

Texas Tech and OK state were big wins and Miss St. on the road. I will give houston credit for that.

SEC will not invite Houston into it.

East Carolina doesn't have enough offense to beat Houston, although they are good defensively. I hope that Houston gets a Big 12 or SEC team. OK State would definitely not lose to Houston again.

Not to take away from a great year that Houston has had; they are just not the top tier teams YET...

You seem to be anti Houston and anti Keenum....

If you are a coach as you say....then you should applaud talent....

For a coach you speak in 1/2 truths..... and speak with prejudice against U of H...

If you were a coach....you would know that Houston is a top 20 team.....that is young and a program that is on the rise....

Speak with your intelligence from Fact and not your dislike of Houston....for whatever reason...

Fact about Houston....they are a young team that will be alot better next year...

Fact about Houston.... Case Keenum is a Heisman contendor and should be......

Fact about Houston....they are 10-2 this year...and as you like to point out they lost against two teams they should have beat.... Houston learned an important lesson...take no one for granted....they made mistakes of a young team....and as a coach you should know this...does that make them a bad team...no...they have won 10 other games to say otherwise....it says that they are a young team....

Fact About Houston.....they have a great coaching staff ....

Fact about Houston.... They are on the rise and they will have a defense within 3 years....

Fact About Houston....They do have an exciting offense that can score on anyone....

Fact about Houston.... They did beat three teams that people thought they would lose too this year...they learned how to win the close ones...which if you are a coach ....you know that this is a lesson that every succesfull program needs to learn....

Fact About Houston this team will only be better next year...and should be a top 10 team next year...
and could go unbeaten next year.... yes I do wish they had a tough schedule next year...but they dont...

Fact about Conference USA....it is underrated.... lets just wait and see what happens in the bowl games....and discuss the weakness or strength of the conference afterwards...

If you are a coach.....speak from your knowlegde without insulting our team.....

It has been a long road for our football program back from the desert....

All that rude comments without merit will do is show ignorance....be polite and discuss our team....

We are proud of our team.....even if you are not...btw.... to be in the top 25 teams in the nation is not an insult...it is a great honor to be recognized along those parameters.....

If you cant be polite in discussing U of H....then just go to the Texas boards and rejoice in their success with the other UT supporters....

Here at U of H country....we feel that Keenum is better with what he has to work with...

And if you are a coach you would recognize that ....and commend him for his accomplishments...

We may not be UT but we are respectable....I doubt that any team that wants to run for national title hopes will want to schedule U of H.....UT wont.....Florida wont and Alabama wont....the reason is U of H is too much of a wild card....as for me.....I want a great team to play in a bowl game....

I am hoping we kick but in the Conference USA championship game and we finish around 14....so we can get an LSU or someone of that Caliber....If we get our but kicked then all the critics can say I told you so....but I think we have a great chance of winning....and I would like all those critics to realize that U of H is a very good team that suffered through growing pains this year....

I hope we do so good over the next couple of years...that the SEC comes courting.... I would love for U of H to play the likes of Alabama, Florida and LSU every year....it would help with our recruiting ...being the only Texas school playing in the SEC.

    1) I am very knowledgeable in football
    2) I am a very successful coach
    3) I have a cousin who was a QB in the NFL, one on the Dodgers and others who have played on various college teams.

In case you couldn't tell, I was being sarcastic about some of those teams in Texas being better than Houston.

Im not trying to be racist, but I get the impression that you are an angry black man. Every time someone disagrees with a black person, they can't debate, they just say "your ignorant." My IQ is higher, my football knowledge is higher, YOU may be higher, but I do think Houston may end the season on a two game losing streak.

    Houston is OVERRATED.

UCF didnt rest anybody against Texas. The Coogs are too scared to play Texas. Houston is not even a top 5 team in Texas.

    1) Texas, 2) TCU, 3) Texas Tech, 4) UTEP, 5) TX state, 6) North Texas, 7-10) a few high school teams, 11) Houston Cougar High.

    HOOK EM LOSERS.

Texas demolished UCF and UTEP, two teams that owned Houston.

Houston caught OK state off guard. Again, texas whooped them a lot worse than Houston did.

Houston does not deserve anything. This is not the 80s or 90s whenever you claimed to be good.

Wow, your name should be High in Houston.

Houston should have lost to Texas Tech if Mike Leach wasn't an idiot.

TCU and Texas are in a different league than Houston. Texas would beat them 52-10 if they played. TCU would beat them by 30.

Houston lost to UTEP. UTEP. the same team who Texas put up more points than allowed total yards. Houston would be in tenth place in the Big 10. I hope they get a formidable opponent in a bowl game and get exposed as the frauds that Houston Cougars are.

BCS: A PANT LOAD of DRIPPING FECES

The BCS: What a pant load of drippy feces. The BCS has the Houston Cougars at 21st in the country with a rating of .2204. They have Oklahoma State as the 20th best team in the country with a rating of .2251. But Houston beat Oklahoma State. Just who designed the BCS software anyway? If you have two teams together in the standings, and one team beat the other team, you would think that the winner of the head-to-head matchup would be ahead of the loser, but not so with the BCS program.

There are seven teams with 3 losses ahead of the two-loss Houston Cougars in the BCS standings. Even Standford, a team that has lost a whopping 4 games is only three levels below Houston in the standings. I'm surprised that the bias isn't even more flagrant than that though. They way the system is I could easily see losing teams ranked higher than Houston. I wonder if Texas, Alabama and Florida had 3-10 records they would still be higher than the 10-2 Houston? There seems to be an unhealthy love affair between sports geniuses and these three 'chosen teams'.

If Florida, Alabama or Texas lost to the worst team in the country they would only drop 2 or 3 in the standings. When Houston lost to UTEP they fell completely out of the top 25, even though they were ranked 12th or 13th. It didn't matter that their loss to UTEP, although inexcusable, was after they lost their best defensive player and defensive captain. They also lost two other defensive players to injury prior to the UTEP loss. If not for SEC officials, both Florida and Alabama would have at least one loss. But it seems the fix is in to ensure Florida and Alabama would be undefeated going into the SEC championship game. Are there any investigations going on to determine whether the SEC officials deliberately threw games? Has anyone looked into those officials' bank accounts to see if they had any big increases in their checking account balances after they gave games to Alabama and Florida?

None of the QBs at Flordia, Alabama and Texas are as good as Houston's Case Keenum. None of them have to work as hard as Keenum does to score points either. Their defenses win their games for them. If Houston had even an average defense, the Cougars would not just be undefeated, they would be slaughtering every team they faced. If Houston had a great defense it would give their offense even more time on the field to score points. Even if Houston has only 15 minutes of time of possession they still greatly outscore their opponents. If Tebow, McCoy or Ingram played on a team with a defense like Houston's their teams would be almost winless. But according to the powers-that-be, the best offensive college football player should be determined by a team's defense, not by the offensive talent of the quarterback. The bias is absolutely shameful.

If Houston had a defense that could keep their opponent's offense off the field Case Keenum would be racking up 75 points, 10 TDs and 1,000 yards a game. In last Saturday's game, Case Keenum only played the first two quarters and he led the team to 59 points in the first half. Houston didn't play their first teams the rest of the game or the game would have been a 120 point rout. Maybe that's what they should have done because Case Keenum could have thrown for at least 10 touchdowns and threw for 1,200 yards. But what the hell, no one seems to give a damn about statistics this year anyway. They have already anointed one of their 'chosen three' to be the Heisman winner.

It's sad how the powers-that-be are going to award the Heisman to a lesser quality player just because of bias and team ranking. Keenum is by far the best QB in the country. But it seems as if the powers-that-be already determined who was going to win the Heisman before the season even started. Hell, I bet they even have Sam Bradford ahead of Case Keenum, and he only played in a couple of games and he didn't even perform that well in those games. What a crock. Isn't there one honest sportswriter, coach, or announcer 'out there'? It doesn't look like it.

OK, I'm sorry for taking time away from worshipping Florida, Texas and Alabama. You can go back to idolizing your less talented quarterbacks and over ranked teams now.

BTW, I wonder who the powers-that-be have determined who will win next year's Heisman. Has that leaked out yet? Or are we going to have to wait until next August to find out who wins next year's Heisman Trophy? What a joke...

Owls and U of H have always been cross town rivals...

No matter what ...Rice luvs us and we luv rice...no matter what is said by some people...

Better luck next year rice....you guys only have a good football program every several years...

Considering how long our dry spell was at U of H... I feel for you guys...

As for the BSC....our team was too young this year.... we got injured early and we are not that deep in defense....

We learned how to win the close ones this year...and this team has learned the hard way not to take anyone for granted...

Next year we will be a better team....too bad we wont have a tough schedule...

I hope we get an LSU or a team of that Caliber for our Bowl....I would like a chance to disprove our critics and beat LSU...our team is faster.... and I think we could beat them....by 10....

    Final Score 45-35....

35 is alot of points for that LSU offense....

If we did play an Alabama, Florida or Texas..... I think we could beat Alabama, I think we could beat Texas, I dont think we would beat Florida thou....

But can we beat Carolina??? I dont know....can our team get emotionally charged against them...
Good Luck Coogs ...Kick beat in Carolina ..

The Southwest Conference was full of snobs who laughed at Houston calling them Cougar High. But as soon as Houston entered the SW Conference they won the title 3 out of the first 4 years. Cougar High regularly beat Arkansas, Texas, A&M and the rest of the powerhouses of in that era. You can still see that snobbish bias now with sportswriters and coaches almost giving Florida, Texas & Alabama the national championship, regardless of how they play. And these same powers-that-be would give the Heisman to Tebow or McCoy even if they threw 10 interceptions a game and only completed 5% of the passes. They made up their mind who they wanted as the Heisman winner at the start of the season. So why should they even go through the pretense of looking at stats and quality of play, as in Case Keenum? The football snobs have already given the award to their favorite, even though not one of them could tie up Case Keenum's shoes.

If the Houston Cougars had even an average defense they would be #1 in the country. If Houston had a good defense that would mean their offense would be on the field even longer and they would regularly slaughtering their opponents, and they would easily beat Florida, Alabama and Texas, all of which almost lost to weak teams, and in the case of Florida and Alabama they needed SEC officials to give them games. If not for the officials both these vastly overrated teams would have at least one loss and probably two. BTW, are there any investigations going on to determine if those SEC officials were paid to throw the games?

The Coogs should really look to upgrade their conference but I'm starting to think it might be like the old SWC days. Houston is better than Baylor, Iowa State, Colorado and even OU this year and of course a couple of other schools in the Big XII and should really be there but no mention of it. Then they would really have a chance to impress voters.

The Heisman used to mean something, nowadays it really is a beauty contest. Case Keenum will "play on Sunday" and if the Texans get a chance to pick him in the draft as our QB of the future (million to 1 odds I imagine) I say get him.

Case Keenum is a million times better than McCoy or Tebow. The Heisman race is a joke. Neither McCoy or Tebow has to prove themselves every week to score as much as Keenum does. Case has to perform every week to outscore opponents because Houston's defense is so damned bad. If Houston had even an average defense they would be number one in the country right now and they would slaughter Florida, Alabama and Texas.

Yet another strong performance from Houston (12 out of 12 games). It makes you wonder where they'd be in the BCS chase if their defense hadn't tanked it against UTEP and UCF.

Had Houston gone undefeated, with three wins over Big 12 and SEC teams included, they would already have the second "at large" BCS spot wrapped up and Boise State wouldn't be in the discussion. Woulda, shoulda, coulda....

From a fan who bleeds Gator orange and blue: The Heisman trophy should be given to the nation's best player, not the best player on a top 5 team! We need to back to those days, instead of the only mention being Tebow, Ingram, or McCoy. I have said in chats and emails to my friends since mid-October, Case Keenum for Heisman. Case, if I had a vote, you'd get it!! Best of luck to you and the Cougars the rest of the way!!!

I understand Walter D's frustration that the UH is not getting more press coverage...but don't jump to "political correctness" as the underlying issue. The Bayou Classic is the biggest game in the history of Black college football. It generates tons more interest than the Bayou Bucket. The Bayou Classic was hosted in the Superdome and it had over double the attendance of the Bayou Bucket (57,000 vs 28,000). Blame the local fan base too. Keep in mind that the Bayou Bucket is held in Houston, the 4th largest city in the US and the home of both programs.

How can we blame the press for not covering our games when we don't attend them? The same deal is happening to Keenum. There is no mention of him for Heisman consideration.
