STILLWATER, Okla. (AP)—The Bedlam rivalry has been defined over the past decade by one Oklahoma team pursuing postseason greatness and another trying to stand in the way.

This year, it’s no different—except the teams will be swapping roles.

After years of trying to dethrone mighty Oklahoma, it’s No. 11 Oklahoma State (9-2, 6-1 Big 12) that will be playing for a potential berth in the lucrative Bowl Championship Series when the rivals meet Saturday in Norman. If the chips fall right, OSU could receive an at-large bid for its first BCS appearance.

It will be only the third time a ranked Cowboys team will play the Sooners when Oklahoma is unranked (1945, 1997). The opposite scenario has occurred 38 times.

“We’re not going to expect to be favored down there just because of what we’ve done this year,” Cowboys linebacker Andre Sexton said Monday. “We know that they’re going to get the respect just because of what they’ve done in the past and how well-known their program is. That’s why we need to put ourselves in a situation to take that next step toward gaining that respect by beating them this year.”

Oklahoma State has lost six straight Bedlam games since pulling off back-to-back upsets of top-5 Oklahoma teams at the end of the regular season in 2001 and 2002. The first one knocked the Sooners out of the national championship picture.

This season, Oklahoma (6-5, 4-3) has matched its biggest loss total since Bob Stoops took over as coach in 1999.

“No matter if one team seems like you’re overmatched, there’s always a chance just because of the fact that’s it’s just a huge rivalry and means a lot to everybody,” Cowboys guard Noah Franklin said. “At some point, it comes down to just who wants it more and talent or depth or whatever just kind of goes out the window.”

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said injured quarterback Zac Robinson resumed throwing over the weekend after having his streak of 34 consecutive starts snapped in Thursday’s 31-28 win against Colorado. Robinson had injured his shoulder and head in a violent collision near the end of OSU’s previous game against Texas Tech.

Gundy said Robinson should be at “full speed” in practice and play against the Sooners.

“Will he have some soreness? I would say he’d still be sore, but there’s not anything structural that can affect him,” Gundy said. “It’s just working through soreness.”

Sooners coach Bob Stoops said it wouldn’t affect Oklahoma’s preparation whether it’s Robinson or backup Brandon Weeden who starts because both run the same offensive system. He also downplayed the impact of his team lacking its usual motivation heading into the rivalry game coming off a 41-13 loss at Texas Tech.

“Of the 11 years that we’ve been here, eight or nine of them we’ve been still in a position working toward a Big 12 championship and still having that opportunity coming into this week, so this is different,” Stoops said. “But we still are in a position where we’re trying to improve our situation.

“That’s what our focus will be on is playing the best we can and trying to make our situation better.”

Oklahoma will be without center Ben Habern, who had surgery Saturday after he broke his left leg against Tech and is expected to be out for three months. He’s the third starting offensive lineman to suffer a season-ending injury for the Sooners, who already lost Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford to a shoulder injury and tight end Jermaine Gresham following knee surgery.

Stoops said middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds was also “doubtful” for Saturday’s game with a strained hamstring.

“I don’t think anything’s in the bag and I don’t think anybody really has a right to think that against a team that’s as talented as this that’s maybe gone through some tough things this year,” Franklin said. “They’re still a great team, and it’s going to be a great challenge for us.”

Since losing to Oklahoma State in 2001, the Sooners have won 49 of their last 50 home games and carry a 29-game winning streak on Owen Field.

“Playing Oklahoma, we haven’t beaten them since I’ve been here,” OSU tailback Keith Toston said. “It’s one of those things, since I’ve been here, they’ve kind of been the big brother. We may be the favorites in this game, but we still feel like we’re the little brother.”

This note is written to Kat's comment dated Dec. 1st 2009 reference OU&OSU. First I would like to say Kat learn how to spell before you start bashing OU. Your comment is chocked with misspelled words and you have the nerve to talk bad about OU and their fans and you put the longhorns on a high horse, the longhorns had help with an easy schedule this year. Oh! did I say a cheap shot targeting Sam Bradford in the red river rivalry. so lets touch on stats OU beat them longgirls"opps" horns on both sides of the ball and held them to the lowest score of the season you go figure. I tought I would share this with you and might I suggest that you use spell checker before bashing OU and their fans. Just standing up for the home team.

Having lived in Oklahoma for most of the 80's, I still cheer both schools 20 years later after coming back home to Wyoming. I wish they could get away with not playing each other because I still believe Oklahoma was & is a great state. I also wish my Cowboys ( Wyoming )could recruit as good of teams so we could beat Utah, BYU & TCU once in awhile. Here's to both teams, good luck in the bowls & continue to respect each other.

I think after hearing all the fair weather sooner fans started coming out've the woodpile saying how they beat osu's A$$ blah blah blah Okay if the sooners played like that every game they had then they'd be were texas is at. Osu at their turf, Shoddy officiating to say the least, not to mention mr mustache had some time to regroup.

I mean were they flapping their gums when almost all the texas teams beat em? I mean OSU had a injury list longer then OU's Wins list, I respect OU but they're not the same since Mike Stoops was there, but I see all these wonderful Q-B"s staying and seeing their future in the nfl go down the drain just cause they feel they have to stay to make the fair weather fans happy. It's the fans who talk the talk when they win but when they lose their quiet at a church mouse or switch to the longhorns. I just don't see no point in even hearing-reading an OU fan get rabid over a topic about another team. I think the worst fans are OU fans you'd think being good sports would go along with a great team like OU but I guess the pests in their woodpile make is hardpressed for anyone to like muchless respect Ou.

Sorry boomers going to go for texas from now on simply cause OU fans are just morons. Still you Pokes Proud of you guys!

While we're on the non-football topic about the two schools. How 'bout that start by the Sooners ballers? Just got picked as Most Disappointing by Jason King.
Ouch, long year in that sport too Sooner fans. By OSU having "merit" does that include being ranked in the top 25 and making the NCAA tourney this year (maybe more) while winning a national championship in at least one more sport (others pending), while OU still says look at our past history in football and all our grant money?

Haha that is great. I was thinking the same think when I read that dumb a$$ post. Get all yout info from a commercial, just like most OU fans get all their college football info from the sports animal. OU doesnt even have a Vet school. There are only 25 and about to be 26 or 27 in the country. OSU works with NASA on Aerodynamic inovations as well as propulsion. They are one of a handful of schools to have a ESPN sports program. The Noble research center is rated as one of the top five Geology centers in the Country. And no it was not paid for by Boone Pickens. They do not have the money that OU does and still has competitive tuition and nationally reconized programs. They were founded as the Princeton of the Plains and didnt have to have a great football team to keep money flowing in like OU. Ou is near a major city while OSU is sixty miles from one. Yet they have grown and survived. And great, OU went and got a politician to run the school. They know how to waste money and screw things up. Good move! Go Pokes. Also OU gets 4 and five star athletes yet still gets whipped up on in most every bowl game. You make Ohio State look like big game masters in comparison. Recent OU bowls losses, USC ( a beat down of mass proportions) LSU, Boisie State, West Virgina, Florida, and now whoever they play this year. Love to watch them choke!

Dingus - you're spot on, from an OKState fan, nice post

rue2915 - seriously, take on a war of school vs schol and say OSU lacks "merit"
Nice quote from the commercial they play during football games about the art donation!
Boren's scholarly activities somehow matter to students there? Did you actually go to school there or simply jump on the bandwagon in the 80's or aftre the 2000 year?

As for OSU, is was set up as an A & M, and we have nationally recognized ag and engineering schools. The Veterinary and Medical schools are nationally ranked (can't be said for OU) every year. Athletics? OSU just won cross country to become #2 overall in collegiate national championships all-time. This started about football, but thanks for posting and showing all your ignorance and giving us all a "teachable moment".

I guess it WASN'T "little brother's" turn to show up "big brother" after all.

Billy - the loss wasn't Robinson's fault. He had no time to throw, and OSU's running game was almost non-existent. If you are going to blame someone, you might start with Gundy's play calling and game management decisions. Two examples, with a 4th-and-1 they take a time-out, then punt the ball. And with 4th and a foot, they take a delay of game penalty while they try to decide what play to call. It's time for Gundy to either hand over play calling to the OC, or get someone to fill in for him as head coach when OSU has the ball and he's calling plays.

The fact is, once the Cowboys realized they were in for a fight and that the win wasn't going to be handed to them, they shut down.

Billy. Thank you for the erudite dissertation on the recent Bedlam game.

Your literary talents indicate that you must have been a dean's list student at OSU.

Dawgmeat.......Thanks for the thought, buddy. With our season the way it has been, yes, this was a nice game. Defense played as well as can be expected, with all the injuries. Here's hoping Stoops stays, O/C Kevin Wilson goes, and Josh Huepel is appointed new offensive co-ordinator. Both of our teams will be back sooner, rather than later. Have a great week. Boomer Sooner.

Hey Kris: your comment: "We got screwed last year with the same amount of losses as Oklahoma, but did we cry? No,we came back this year and are gonna kick ass."

Mock Brown was politicing like Yobama throughout the season.... I seem to remember a half time interview in which he was selling the soap. Stoops has the same opportunity, simply said "no, thanks." Mock cried like a baby and it wasn't until post season that he quit whining as ultimately it embarassed him. Yeah, the shorthorns cried... constantly.

The problem with Ok State is the total lack of merit of the entire school. It is just a glorified Vo tech... OU out raises them about 15 to 1 in private money. Pickens game them a ton of money for athletics, and football as it is high profile, but what have they done with that?

OU's President Boren is a Rhodes Scholar, a 2 time governor of OK, and a former senator that was just appointed to a special postion by the President. OU is #1 per capita in public universities for National Merit Scholars... OU has the largest, most significant gift of art ever given to a public U....

OSU likes credits "Whose Who Among High School Students" as a credential! What a joke... and I couldn't tell you who OSU's president is, but the "rivalry" is one sided from an educational standpoint.

Keep shaking your keys, showing the pistols, and bring that huge head to football games OSU... You've got a long way to go until you are significant, we'll keep our focus on the burnt orange that makes us puke...

Why would Stoops want to go to Notre Dame? They'd fire him if he had a year there like he had this year.

Joe Castiglione and David Boren understand off-years, especially when those off-years have been riddled with major player losses due to injuries.
