Virginia Tech has taken advantage of the two worst teams in the ACC the last two weeks. Those easy wins likely won’t have the same satisfaction as one Saturday against the third-worst club in the conference.

The No. 14 Hokies look to defeat state rival Virginia for the sixth straight season when they visit Scott Stadium for the Commonwealth Cup.

Virginia Tech (8-3, 5-2) has won three straight, posting back-to-back victories over Maryland and North Carolina State. The Terrapins and Wolfpack are tied for last place in the Atlantic Division.

Virginia (3-8, 2-5) is in last in the Coastal, and this could be its last game under coach Al Groh. The Hokies have won every matchup since 2004, with four straight wins by double digits before a 17-14 comeback victory last season.

Tyrod Taylor completed 12 of 18 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown, and also ran for 137 yards in last year’s win. Taylor has thrown for 13 touchdowns this season and ran for four.

“Tyrod, at least in conference games, is first in the conference in passing efficiency, so he’s obviously doing the principal thing that quarterbacks have to do is to pass the ball very well,” Groh said. “And their yards-per-catch is extraordinary this year as a result of his passing.”

Groh is in his ninth season with the Cavaliers, going 59-52. He’s trying to avoid speculation about his job.

“It’s really not about me. It’s about the team and it’s about the players,” he said. “You know, that’s all I’m really thinking about, so I don’t really have any thoughts on it.”

The coach will get his first look at Hokies freshman running back Ryan Williams, who ranks fifth in the Football Bowl Subdivision with 1,355 yards. Williams has averaged 141.7 yards the last three games after gaining 120 last Saturday in a 38-10 win over North Carolina State.

Williams broke Darren Evans’ freshman school record of 1,265 yards set last season.

“I was just out there grinding for all the yardage,” Williams told Virginia Tech’s official Web site. “The record ended up coming my way. It feels pretty good to have it.

“But I don’t find it as a big deal. I’m just glad we got the win. That’s all I’m thinking about.”

Jarrett Boykin had six catches for 164 yards and a touchdown, giving him two straight 100-yard efforts. The 164 yards are the sixth-highest total by a player under coach Frank Beamer.

The Hokies have been stifling on defense, allowing 22 points and one offensive touchdown during the three-game win streak. Virginia Tech has 12 sacks over the last two games and 28 for the season.

“We want to get those 10 wins and everyone is trying to do their part to help us,” safety Kam Chancellor said. “Everyone is playing their position and not worrying about what’s going on on the other side of the field or what’s going on down in the box. If you play your position, you’ll be alright. That’s what we’re doing.”

Linebacker Cody Grimm has been a key to the defense with three forced fumbles last week and an FBS-high seven for the season. Grimm also had two sacks against the Wolfpack.

“He’s amazing,” Beamer said. “I never see him get tired. He keeps going the same speed all the time and he’s a playmaker. The game makes sense and he has a knack of making plays.”

The Cavaliers have lost five straight and are 0-4 against ranked teams after falling 34-21 at then-No. 18 Clemson last weekend. Virginia did not score in the second half.

The 21 points were more than Virginia had put up in any of its previous five games. Jameel Sewell threw for 160 yards and one touchdown, and Mikell Simpson rushed 14 times for 84 yards.

Sewell has been sacked seven times, picked off twice and not thrown a touchdown the last two years against Virginia Tech.

“It would definitely be a bright spot for everybody to end off with a ‘W,’” Groh said. “And just for the coaching staff, not knowing what’s going on with all of their futures.”

Tyrod to danny coale worked great. Outstanding performance by both. However , I was wondering what happened with Jarrett Boykin? Great fumble recovery for a touchdown by him. But its unusual that he wasnt catching any passes.
was he double covered? seems like the best defender was covering coale although not too successfully. Is Boykin healthy for the next game?

I was there yesterday and enjoyed a stroll around the Grounds.

Although a few preppy losers kept bragging about their manners, most of the Hoos were marvelous hosts.

Some fresh faced dude in the Wahoo uniform (chinos, shirt and tie) came into Scott hollering about poultry science. I suspect he likely got punched sometime during the game, perhaps even by one of his own.

UVA: Do not take this wrong, no disrespect intended, only directed towards ur coaching staff if necessary, other than that, I have respect for all the fans of the ACC. As an FSU follower, I believe VT deserves congrats for only losing to the #2 SEC team by a mere 11 points earlier in the season opener, unlike my lousy seminoles being blasted by our archrivals\ intrastate rivals for almost a decade. Besides, its better to be in any of these other ACC forums than my own. Its saturated with almost every SEC team talkin smack about FSU and the rest of the conference. TOOOOOO HEAVY FOR ME TA HANG IN!

    Hey G-Dawg,

"Just a little friendly advice. If you are (you're) going to make grammar and spelling the crux of your (possessive) argument, you should at the very least, strive to make your own writing up to snuff. Case in point: your use of the proper form of your---as in you're or you are."

Just a little friendly advice. You shouldn't try and correct a professional legal writer with Red Herring minutiae. We don't speak in America 15th century Queens English and the terms I use and you mentioned are interchangeable in America. It's interesting how you used that to try and diminish my credibility. At least your somewhat clever, but still arrogant.

You also missed the crux of my comments, which are that the majority of the students and alumni of UVA are pretentious, arrogant, persons of little character that experience grade inflation during their experience at "The University". This was reflected in the game yesterday and will continue to be reflected in the majority of your schools alumni and students. Also, when you have the audacity to call yourself "The University" and no one knows your school outside of Virginia and in certain professional circles in New York City and Washington, DC, you open yourself up to the abuse and the fact that smart people outside of Virginia will not give you a free pass on anything. The majority of your students also wouldn't even have attended your school had they gotten into an Ivy League school.

So Yahoos, enough of the banter, which was pretty weak. You are a good school overall at the national level, even a Top 20 Law School and Business School. But your alumni and students are plagued with a lot of arrogance and grade inflation that people just won't tolerate or let you know about, especially people from better Ivy League and regional schools from other parts of the country. Til next year.

    Stephen

Oh, Stephen, enough with your invective. As they say, you get out of school what you put into it. I have many friends from both Virginia Tech and Virginia. They are all fine, intelligent, and hard working people. You paint quite a broad stroke, my friend, which is unfortunate. Please accept my best holiday wishes for you and yours for the holiday season.

Well "Doofy", you wouldn't know poise and intelligence if you saw it and you just don't like the truth being said about your overrated school. I'm talking about real poise and intelligence under pressure and adversity that requires the character that 99% of your alumni and students will never have. An arrogant person almost never actually and rarely acquires real character and the intelligence that they may have is marred by their arrogance as indicated by your alumni and students in there everyday lives and the performance of your sports teams, especially your football team. I also don't think anyone could take a person who calls themselves "Doofy" seriously about anything, but I am responding to your comment as a teaching moment for you, Playful nicknames in the real world "Doofy" don't cut it either outside of the warm and isolated confines of Charlottesville, especially in competitive fields.

As for you Eric, you must be kidding. I never met a UVA student that could hack the academic rigor that a Virginia Tech Engineering degree requires. I know of alumni from your school with great grades in their History, MBA and Law studies that can't hack it in real world situations and have to work for their parents or in lessor jobs that they are undereducated for because of their lack of character and/or maturity. My Tech Chemistry degree as well as my athletic experience there has served me very well and if you could put your own ego aside, you would realize the state colleges in Virginia are set-up so that the best technical education and studies are provided at Virginia Tech and the best education for the softer sciences are provided at UVA and William and Mary (the division 1-A school that humiliated you earlier this year). No one has to bag about the Virginia Tech football team or its reputation in the fields of Accounting, Computer Science, Engineering and Architecture and the overall college experience that generally promotes an articulate but honest and aggressive professional. This is in sharp contrast to the many immature, over-coddled and over-competitive jerks that are routinely produced by your school and indeed bring down the companies and organizations that they work for. You have some stars, indeed the occasional superstar, that graduates and puts up with your school while attending. Your comment about Tech degrees is amusing. Easy majors are easy majors and I haven't met the UVA person, like I said before, who could hack the Engineering curriculum at Virginia Tech. Apparently you also don't understand or accept the grade inflation at your school either. I also never met a UVA person who could leave the state of Virginia and hack it at an Ivy League school or a school like Vanderbilt, Stanford or Northwestern as well. I also think your right about the "wiping" comment being a Freudian slip, because we didn't whip your team, we used your arrogant team to wipe the locker room floor with. You just don't like to hear the truth.

    Great win for Tech.

At halftime I had to go see a man about buying a horse. After finishing taking care of business, the following conversation took place:

UVA fan: At Mr. Jefferson's University, we are taught to wash our hands after urinating.
Me: Well at Tech, they teach us not to piss on our hands.

Stephen, if you had half the poise and class your football team and head coach possessed, you would accept a compliment to your team and school. You bash UVA fans for not supporting their team, then you bash them for supporting their team. If you don't want your intelligence insulted, please write something intelligent.

I always hear Tech grads talking down other schools but never talking up their own college. How terribly embarassing/sad it must be to have no pride in your school! As it stands, Tech is a good school but Virginia is a great school. I think the wiping typo was a Freudian slip since Tech diplomas come on a roll found in the bathroom stall.

    About the game/coach:
Groh is a complete grohtard. Extremely predictable play calling in the second half (again) and never used his running backs effectively this season. Sewell handled the ball on about 40 plays with yet another terrible performance (can't see/pass out of the pocket for the 3rd straight year). Groh reminds me of the Vikings coach (Childress) that continued to play Tavaris Jackson. The QB is bad and the coach can't figure this out? Where was Vic Hall for the previous 3 years? The offense in the past 5 years? As you can tell, I am not a Groh fan fro about 6 years now. He can put players into the NFL but can't win college games. I am guessing he will have a hard time finding another head coaching job after his reign over the critical fans. Sic semper tyrannis.

Hey "wade4profit", it's "whipping" not "wipping". I guess UVA continues to prove the point I've maintained for years, which is that UVA has the greatest grade inflation in the South. That means that you get a C for paying your tuition, a B if you sit for class and tests and an A if you actually apply yourself and learn your subject matter. It would also be nice if a UVA person could actually write a grammatically correct sentence without a spelling error. Spell check is just a few clicks and I guess your too lazy to do that.

As for giving 110% percent, I never met a UVA graduate that gave 100% in anything but memorizing their way through their grade inflation school. If your players gave 110 %, why were they standing around half of the time while on the field and why did 95% of your fans leave or should I say "bail out" after it was clear they weren't in the game anymore. Please "wade4profit", stop insulting our intelligence.

I'm not a Tech or UVA fan, but I have watched games of both (attended the Duke-UVA game). Tech has better athletes than UVA. I don't see game breakers on the UVA sideline. They have D-1 athletes, but not athletes which can make middle to upper level teams fear them.

As a UVA fan it is tough to take this annual wipping by Tech. However, it is heartening to see the UVA players give a 110% on the field. I am proud of the players we have and the effort that they put forth. Over a 60 min game, howerver, superior talent and athleticism usually wins out. Tech clearly has the superior talent and hats off to their school for developting a premier football program. Maybe with a new coach and staff UVA can begin to bridge the talent gap over the next few years. It won't be an easy task, but the right choice for the new coach could make it happen.

Hey BUD FOSTER, We would love to have you @ WVU. Bewildered Bill Stewart can be your equipment manager...and Mixed Up Jeff Mullen can wash the jock straps...We need a REAL head coach with discipline and spark at WVU. I wish they would have chosen him instead of the "Bewildered." If you want to come to WVU, us moonshiners will pay you a good salary.

Part of me is sad to see Groh go. He's kind of a Bill Belichick kind of coach - except not as smart. He's whiny (see how he whined when the refs flagged his defense for a blatant late hit on Taylor), he's mediocre at his job at best, and he's been historically arrogant. I enjoyed watching the Hokies roll him and his ego laden Wahoos for year. I am sorry to see him go! That said, here's hoping the braintrust at UVA hires another marginal coach from the NFL to take over for Groh. I think there are about to be a few of those available soon....

    GO HOKIES GO!

PS - @4 raises a valid point about the Hokies needing an offensive coordinator but WAY off on saying that Duke/UNC is a great rivalry. Dude - those teams blow.... even worse than UVA.

Actually, "jmmiva", I did get accepted into the MBA program at "The University", but chose to go to Vanderbilt Law School instead after earning my Chemistry degree from Virginia Tech. After working for the Patent and Trademark Office for 2 years and working for a mid-sized law firm in NOVA for 10 years, I now have my own Patent and Trademark Law Practice in NOVA as well and recently fired a UVA attorney who kept pissing clients off with his arrogance.

I think I was on target too with my prediction, including the "I quit" attitude of your players and students in general. So like I said before, "the talent goes to Tech and the ego goes to UVA". And this year (as in most years really), "The University" does not stand for The University of Virginia, but rather The Virginia Polytechnic and State University. See ya next year Yahoos and I'll continue to abuse your alumni both in and out of the legal profession.

It sure would be great to see the Va Tech vs UVA rivalry reach the level of the Auburn vs Alabama game Thursday night. Maybe a coaching change at UVA and a new offensive coordinator at Va Tech will produce football on a level seen every day in the SEC. If what's happening in other schools (Alabama, Tennessee, Ga. Tech, No. Carolina, Duke, etc.) is any indicator, business as usual just isn't going to get the job done!!

Well, well, well. It's that time of the year where Virginia Tech plays "The University". "The University"... the university of grade inflation....the university of arrogance....the university of alumni that are devoid of ethics...the university of bad football and never coaching any of its players upward. I think it is more truer than ever that "in the state of Virginia, the talent goes to Tech and the ego goes to UVA". This continues to hold true well after graduation as well. I think it is also true that athletics imitate life and that a person can never predict the future. But after watching the whining, lack of talent and cheap shot Cavs football team this year, I will humbly speculate that talented Virginia Tech will beat UVA in a rout 34-14, with 7 points being "mercy points" from 3 team players. With the "I quit" mentality and lack of effort sometimes shown by UVA players this year, the score might even be higher.
