With four weeks remaining in the regular season, the Pac-10 race is wide open.

Not surprisingly, Southern California - winner of seven consecutive conference titles - is one of the teams in the running.

Considerably more unexpected, Stanford is also in the hunt for its first league championship in a decade.

Ranked for the first time in eight years, the No. 25 Cardinal look to build on an impressive victory and move closer to a conference title when they visit the 11th-ranked Trojans on Saturday.

Stanford (6-3, 5-2) was picked to finish sixth in the Pac-10 preseason media poll but is in the mix to win its first league title since 1999.

Things weren’t looking good for the Cardinal after losing back-to-back games to Oregon State and Arizona in mid-October, but they’ve bounced back to win their last two, including last Saturday’s 51-42 victory over then-No. 7 Oregon.

With the win over the Ducks, Stanford became bowl eligible for the first time since Tyrone Willingham’s final year as coach in 2001. The Cardinal were also rewarded with a spot in the Top 25 for the first time since ending the 2001 season at No. 16, following a loss to Georgia Tech in the Seattle Bowl.

While Stanford is excited about the ranking, the team has bigger goals.

“Our goal is to win the Pac-10 championship,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “We’re still alive for that. We’ll go next week down to USC and play a great football team down there and try to keep those hopes alive.”

Stanford lost to USC 45-23 last season, but in the last meeting at the Coliseum in 2007, the Cardinal beat the 41-point favorite Trojans 24-23.

USC (7-2, 4-2) was being counted out of the conference race just a week ago following a 47-20 loss at Oregon, its worst defeat under ninth-year coach Pete Carroll. But Carroll’s team bounced back with last Saturday’s 14-9 win over Arizona State.

Despite the victory, the Trojans, who have owned at least a share of the Pac-10 title each season since 2002, struggled to put away a mediocre Sun Devils team.

The offense gained a season-low 258 yards and was bailed out by a defense that created a season-high four turnovers, including Will Harris’ 55-yard interception return for a touchdown.

While the defense came up with some key stops, it had trouble slowing down Arizona State, yielding 347 yards. The Trojans are allowing an average of 480.7 yards in their last three games and will need to shore up some defensive miscues against a Stanford team averaging 520.7 yards of offense in its last three.

USC’s offense has looked sluggish the past two weeks, combining to score 34 points after averaging 33.3 points in winning its previous four games.

Freshman quarterback Matt Barkley is in the middle of these offensive struggles.

In his least productive game, Barkley completed 7 of 22 passes for 112 yards with one touchdown and one interception against the Sun Devils, who gave up 75 of those yards on a single short pass to Damian Williams.

Barkley has 10 touchdowns to seven interceptions on the season and the Trojans’ passing offense ranks eighth in the Pac-10 with 221.6 yards per game.

While USC’s passing game is struggling under its first-year quarterback, the Cardinal’s offense is rolling behind its freshman signal-caller.

Andrew Luck completed 12 of 20 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns against the Ducks, and has thrown for 2,076 yards with 11 TDs to just three interceptions on the season.

He is joined in the backfield by running back Toby Gerhart, who leads the Pac-10 in both rushing yards (1,217) and rushing touchdowns (16).

Gerhart is coming off an outstanding performance, running for a school-record 223 yards and three scores against Oregon. The senior has seven 100-yard games on the season, and finished with 101 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries against USC last season.

“They’re playing lights-out,” Carroll said of Stanford. “I don’t know how we’re going to slow them down. I don’t know, but we’ll figure that out.”

Carroll is hoping his team can take advantage of finishing the regular season with three straight home games after playing just two of their previous eight at the Coliseum. USC has won 12 consecutive home games since the loss to Stanford in 2007.

“Hopefully as we finish up this year, we can really create a big stir at the Coliseum,” Carroll said.

“We’ve got to take care of business,” he added. “That’s a huge, huge opportunity for us.”

Dillion, you are such an idiot. Like I said, continue and suck on that male organ and see if you get some brains out of the deal. That's the best you can hope for. You don't suck on anything except that male organ you skin flute player. You see, you throw insults at someone and they best you and then you accuse them of being gay. How much more lame can such a moron like you get? I'll bet the favorite part of your Thanksgiving turkey is the neck. Keep choking your "chicken. And again, you didn't take a stand for your team or offer any facts for debate on the subject here. YOU"RE a FREAKING COWARD AND EVEN LESS OF A MAN !!!

You see Dillion, I gave you the facts you asked for and all you can do is throw insults. You are a low class moron. The only thing I regret is sinking to your whale crap level in responses. You don't even have to guts to post your profile or atate any facts for your team or who you think is better. You just have to call people names and stir up crap. So keep sucking on that male organ and pray for some brains!!!!!

And Here's another fact for you Dillion since you're so smart. USC has played a far tougher schedule than most. They have played 5 top 25 teams and are 3-2 against them. They don't "suck," as you say, but definately are not the team many incuding me hoped for. They didn't deserve the #4 ranking like I said because of all the unknowns. Even many sportswriters have agreed with me and also say that Texas is going through the backdoor for a chance to play for a BCS National Chamionship. Who have they played? Barely defeated a banged up OK and the only real team they beat is OSU. The SEC does look to be the stronger conference at this point.

So again, I have made NO excuses for USC, They lost soundly. They nor myself have blamed anyone but the team itself.

I have never cried over anything and if you TRULY HAD READ my posts you would have seen and acknowledge that I have said from the beginning that I ALWAYS felt USC was overrtaed this season. You WOULD HAVE READ that with a true freshman QB and nine new starters on defense that they COULDN"T be ranked where they were. SO YOU HAVEN'T READ ALL MY POSTS YOU MORON!!!!

teachher, I am afraid you're right about a couple of things. I say this a a USC fan of many years. However, many of the things you mentioned are false and have been proven so. Bush was never found to have taken any money. The business and moral practices of his family, in particular his parents are of definate concern. Nothing has ever been proven that Reggie took anything. I am not nieve enough to believe that he didn't benefit, but like I said, nothing has ever come to light that he did. As far as Mark Sanchez goes, again nothing was ever proven he did anything wrong. Had there been any question everyone in the media would have been screaming for it and all women's organizations would have been all over it on behalf of the victim. Until you or anyone else has PROOF, then it's best you keep that opinion to yourself. It only shows you as biter and wishing misfortune on others. In the false acquesations, you victimize both the lady an question and Sanchez. Be about the upcoming game between USC and UCLA is cool. I agree that the wheels have fallen off the bus at USC and they'd better figure it out or if they do play in a bowl game it will be the Tiddy Bowl. In a rivalry like USC/UCLA anything can happen and has. UCLA beat a heavily favored USC a couple of years ago. I haven't forgotten that and USC had bettr remember of it will be another long day for them. The new coach there is very capable of giving Pete Carroll a very good game. I hope it is a good game and not lopsided either way. We'll see what happens and if you're a UCLA fan, good luck and may the best team win.

I love it! USC and UCLA game will be outstanding this year! SC will be stumbling and a bumbling with the Bruins with SC having a lot more to lose than ever, than UCLA. They will be so dizzy from the Stanford slaughter (with the 2 point conversion and a 28 point lead by the opposing team!) they will get their just due after man-handling the rest of the nation for so many years. Payback is a beeetch after so many stompings they have done to other teams. Reggie (I didn't do anything wrong by getting paid in college ball) Bush and Matt (I don't care about babies, even if they're mine) Leinart and Mark (I'm not a rapist!) Sanchez are all gone and now SC needs to bring more criminal-type back into the program, if they plan on winning again anytime soon. Thank you Mark Sanchez for leaving school (while you could before there were anymore rape charges against you) early and destroying Pete's kingdom and bringing him back down to earth! Yes, that is dirt you smell, Pete.

Listen Dillion, if you really read my posts you'd see that I haven't cried over anything and I have always said that USC had TOO many unknowns to be ranked where they were. Additionally, if you had read that other "gentleman's" post you'd would have seen that it was totally out of place and racist. It was offensive and totally out of place. Its been a very bad month for my pro n college teams with there storied defenses getting shredded but as a SC fan I have to give props to Stanford and the butt whipping they handed to the men of Troy! I guess this is the year that even Uncle Pete couldn't wave the magic wand and produce another BCS team. As I've said throughout the season I hope that ALL Pac 10 teams have stepped up and raised the level that SC has displayed during this decade because that can only help the conference and finally these douchebag Analyst can see that there is good football being played out here. Hopefully the Oregons, Washingtons, Arizonas schools can maintain the level of competition that the Trojans diplayed during there run. Though a down year hopefully some of those players realize there is a responsibilty, pride and tradition in wearing that Trojan uniform and be able to soak some of that nasty taste of losing and spit it out on there 2010 opponents! I also feel a sense of complacency in Coach Carrol this year but I think ALL Trojan fans know that this guy is a motivator and he to now has a challange to re energize himself and bring it hard for years to come! As for the haters bagging on the fans! Sorry if we are all spoiled children out here since we tend to take our Lakers and Trojans for granted and boo a little but its still supporting the team! If Im paying $100 a pop I expect my team to put on a good show and will let em know if not! As for the leaving part! Sorry out here in La La land we got a little problem, other than the smog, and thats called traffic! I myself dont leave when I hit a sporting event because I like participating in the after the game tailgate. But I can understand why my fellow Angelenos leave that Fwy drving is a "B". All you haters back east, south or wherever enjoy the taunting while you can because this University will be back! Fight on

USC peaked in 2005. Oregon and Stanford are just beginning to build up steam. AS a life long SC fan, I have to agree that Oregon and Stanford probably would beat them again, and it's because of Coaching. Pete Carroll has to know that the weakness is in his d-line, yet he never makes any real adjustments to compensate for that, just stacks the line with more weak linemen. Did anyone else notice he's been running the same weak 5-2 set that hasn't stopped anyone these past few weeks?

Until we can work those out, I sadly look forward to a beating by Arizona.

USC will not be back on top until we get some gutsy play callers as Offensive and Defensive Coordinators.

    Peace and Chicken Grease

Great for football and all the full of beans ANALysts and idiot pollsters........Stanford would beat them again tomorrow and so would Oregon. USC is good, but not superior just by showing up as most think. They have been superior, but often overrated........like last year. PLAYOFFS, the rest is B(c)S, settle it on the field.

I always find that people who wish misfortune on any team, ie in this case, USC are jealous of the success they;ve had. I saw it when MIA, FLA, GA, OK, TX, and several others were all at the top. Yes, the fans at the game last Sat did leave when the game was no longer in doubt. To say that it is a reflection of the fans of USC is BS!!! There are onlt a few schools or even professional teams where fans would stay untill the final gun. That is a reflection of society today as a whole so Art #754, you analogy is not worth much. Mr Commonsense #753, you're a racist!!! The comments you made were totally out of hand!!!!

People always seem to talk about how overated they think USC is, you ever think that stanford maybe is a pretty good team you never give the other teams credit you just wanna talk about how bad you think USC is and if im not mistaken the PAC-10 went undefeated or only lost one bowl game last year sooooo they're not as weak as some of you think.

See if you can follow some logic here. I was not talking about last years florida team. You said there is no way Florida would be able to stop Oregon or Stanford this year. I'm saying that is what everyone said about trying to keep up with Oklahoma last year in the championship game last year when Oklahoma came in with the highest scoring offense ever. End result--they held Oklahoma to about 40pts below there average. This years Florida team pretty much has the same defensive players. While I don't know if the gators would best oregon--one thing for sure oregon would not put all those points on the board on either Florida or Alabama which probably had a better defense. NO WAY! That's the difference in the conferences--the top teams in the SEC (Alabama, LSU, Florida) are holding opponents (conference opponents--not the cupcakes) to around 10 pts a game. No one is doing that in the PAC 10. Any were saying Ohio state would score at will on LSU and Florida in those championship games--didn't happen. The better question is would the Oregon or stanford defenses be able to stop Alabama or Florida's offense--I think not.

Was it just me or did anyone else notice how FAST the coliseum emptied in the 4th qtr. as Stanford was administering a major ass whoopin' on the "mighty" trojans.? this has been my point for so long about S.C. fans, they are bandwagoners and have always been. During Pete's first year as coach, even he was quoted as saying how the coliseum was maybe half full. When they got better you couldn't find a seat in the house. Saturday's execution brought back days of yor so the "loyal" trojan fans did what they have always done best, jump ship BEFORE it went down. At least at stadiums like Notre Dame, no matter how bad losses got, and they have had their share these past several years, their LOYAL fans stay until the final gun sounds. So much for that freshman phenom(Barkley). As for the 2 pt. conversion, old Petey had it coming to him, it is called Karma! And I am tired of their lame excuses: rebuilding year is my favorite. For a program that loudly brags about their cupboards being stacked with talent, I don't buy that horse manure. Every program goes through it, you are lucky to get 3 yrs. out of most players, that's college football. The run is over for S.C. just like it ended for all other programs who had their runs in college football(Miami, Florida St., Notre Dame, etc) it's just the game.
