A career-high performance by Case Keenum capped by some last-minute heroics got Houston’s vaunted passing game back on track.
Keenum now has the Cougars in position for their longest winning streak in three years and perhaps their first top 10 appearance since 1991.
No.13 Houston will try to match both feats Saturday night when they face Tulsa, a team looking to avoid a fourth loss in a row.
Keenum came through with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Edwards with 21 seconds to play to help the Cougars (7-1, 3-1) to a 50-43 victory over Southern Mississippi last Saturday. The Golden Eagles had taken the lead 36 seconds earlier.
“I try to have that calm demeanor.” Keenum said. “I think the quarterback needs to be the steady hand out here. Not too high when things are good and not too low when things are bad.”
Keenum finished the game completing 44 of 54 passes for a career-high 559 yards while matching his season high with five touchdowns. That came a week after the junior struggled in a 38-15 win over SMU, throwing for a season-low 233 yards with one score.
Keenum is the linchpin of Houston’s passing offense, which leads the nation with an average of 422.6 yards while scoring 26 touchdowns. The team’s 333 points ranks third behind Texas Tech and No. 2 Texas, while wide receivers James Cleveland (686 yards), Tyron Carrier (599) and Edwards (564) are among the top eight in the conference in receiving while combining for 15 TDs.
“We expect to go out there and throw and catch and get upfield,” said Keenum, who helped Houston climb two spots in this week’s AP poll. “We expect to get those first downs and turn those into touchdowns.”
The Cougars, who are No. 15 in the BCS, are in position to reach the top 10 of the poll for the first time since Sept. 8, 1991. They could get there with a strong victory over Tulsa (4-4, 2-2) while getting their first five-game winning streak since a six-game run from Oct. 21-Dec. 1, 2006.
Houston holds an 18-16 advantage in the all-time series, winning three of four since Tulsa joined Conference USA in 2005.
The Cougars beat the Golden Hurricane 70-30 on Nov. 15 after losing in their last visit to Tulsa a year earlier, 56-7. Houston is 6-9 at Tulsa.
“They still play hard, and they still have good players,” Houston coach Kevin Sumlin said. “They caught a couple bad breaks. For whatever reason, they have not been able to get over the hump. They’ve been close and just haven’t made it.”
Tulsa is looking to avoid its first four-game slide since a losing the 2004 Humanitarian Bowl to Georgia Tech and opening the following season 0-3.
The Golden Hurricane are coming off last week’s 27-13 loss to SMU, as they committed 14 penalties to nearly double their previous season high.
“We just have to get things back on track and go get a win,” coach Todd Graham said. “To do that, we have to play extremely well this week.”
Graham’s major concern for Saturday could be who’ll start under center. Sophomore G.J. Kinne suffered a concussion against the Mustangs and was replaced by junior Jacob Bower.
Kinne’s status is uncertain after completing 2 of 10 passes for 10 yards and two picks last week. He’s been solid otherwise, throwing for 1,498 yards with 12 TDs and four interceptions in his first season as a starter.
Bower had 206 yards and a touchdown on 9 for 22 passing after entering last week’s game in the second quarter. He’s completed 15 of 35 passes for 289 yards and two scores in limited action during four games this season.
“One of the reasons we made a change there was because G.J. seemed dazed and out of it and was missing some reads and throws,” Graham said.
Tulsa’s pass defense will try to rebound from its worst performance of the season. The unit gave up 354 yards and TD passes of 49 and 36 yards to SMU after holding opponents under 200 yards for three of the previous four games.

When was that? I was there beginning in 90 and the only time the Dome was packed was if we played UT or A&M and it was with UT or A&M fans. It really wasn't slashing the budget that moved UH to the Rob. We weren't filling the dome with UT and A&M no longer in conference. We weren't going to draw non UH fans playing teams that are now C-USA East. The Rob was a perfect fit after renovation. Furthermore with the Oilers long gone and minute maid in the plans or maybe even built, the Dome wasn't going to be maintained by the pro teams any more. UH never had the budget to maintain the Dome on its own. The HSA wasn't going to have the money to maintain with only UH playing there. UH couldn't afford a lease that would allow HSA to break even. The budget would have to increase by a large amount.

everybody knows damn well that CASE KEENUM is the best player in college football this year!! he lit up 2 of the big 12's best (back to back) and then did the same to an sec favorite!! i don't get it!!! these idiots sit around here and act like they don't know what's going on in the "other" conferences!! HE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT'S CONSISTENT!! colt mc coy just had his first good game against ucf!! he has been under-performing all season!! all the rest of the candidates have been playing well here and there but CASE has been doing it week in and week out!!! GIVE HIM THE DAMN TROPHY!!
hell, this year everybody looks vulnerable week in and week out!! this has been a good competitive year of football and the bcs idiots are going to make a mockery of the bowl games!!! why is ut ranked nuber 2?!?!? somebody please tell me! with the expectations for their team they have not been that impressive!!! put ut in the title game and they will get blown out!! seriously look at some of the teams schedules who are ranked higher than UH, it's a joke some of these teams aren't playing ANY competition!!!
HA!! okie state is a joke!! they put UH on their schedule for 3 straight years and loss 2 out of 3 (like how the media left that out huh)
the COOGS need to use this season and how they're getting dis-respected in the system as motivation to win the conference and get even better next season and go undefeated and win the conference again!! they need to expose the bcs and some of these programs they hold so dear for the lackluster teams they are!! ...sooooo why can't there be a play-off again?!?!...

No One at this point has better numbers than Keenum....
What is Lou Holtz but a senile ole man anyway....
It was funny that one of the espn guys last week talked about Keenum and it sounded like he had to apoligize for mentioning his name to his espn cohort....
WAKE UP KEENUM is the man...
U of H wont get thier respect...that is ok....they wont be able to deny us next year... If we dont lose anymore games this year...we should finish about 15....Yeah it sucks but USC can have 4 losses and they will still rank USC Higher then us...they will find any excuse to not rank us higher then we are now...
Heck LSU will finish with three losses and they will still be ranked higher then us... I almost wish we lose one more game and end up playing an LSU or some other SEC....this is my wish....Please have U of H end up playing against LSU, Alabama or Florida, if not one of em...then to play against Oregon or USC....or how about georgia tech....please send someone to us...who is suppose to be alot better than us so we can beat em....
I doubt we even could bowl season because of conference alliances.... I cant see any of the media darlings allowing themselves to get beat by a Conference USA team in a bowl game...the media is still pissed about OSU, Texas Tech and Mississippi State...
Let em think we are a roll over team....just like OSU did when they scheduled us...jokes on them...

The other thing I'm tired of is, how they praise Colt McCoy's effort this past weekend against a C-USA defense and yet when Case plays these same teams they bad mouth the defense he is facing. Speaking of defense when did the Big 12 become a defensive conference? Oh yeah it was when the two anemic offenses played in the Red River Rivalry. There is not a conference out there that is playing good defense. The ACC had 90 point games this past week, as did the Big East, the PAC10 and the SEC. All the other conferences posted games of 70 + points respectively. So I ask once again which conference plays solid defense week in and week out? The answer is non of them.
Mississippi State did not seem to have too hard of a time keeping LSU out of the endzone LSU had an anemic 14 points scored on offense and a whole 263 yards total offense. The following week Georgia Tech lit them up for 52 points and then Houston put up 553 yards and scored 31 and turned the ball over twice inside the red zone. Get over yourselves and give Keenum his deserved reward. Tebow, McCoy, and Ingram have had mediocre seasons at best this year, along with the rest of the so called Heisman candidates.
My gosh Jordan Shipley is now up for the Heisman according to ESPN, (Lou Holtz let that cat out of the bag during last weeks game against CFU and low and behold Shipley makes the Heisman board at ESPN. LOL) after having a good game last week against the same conference Keenum is in. How that is not a double standard, I have no idea? Plus at 24 this year Jordan should be smokin 18, 19 and 20 year olds. Everyone in his graduating H.S. class is now in their second or third year in the NFL.
Enough said, the Heisman will go to Colt McCoy this year because it is his turn. All the talking heads are trying desperately to make a case that no one is doing anything special enough to win the Heisman this year, so out of years of waiting his turn behind Tebow and Bradford they will give it to him. It is just like everything else in this world today, all symbolism and no substance. How about you give it to the guy who earns it, instead of anointing someone the best!

Yes the Bonghorns would put up some points, but there has not been a defense yet to hold "The Show" down. The Texas defense would be just like the others.....watching completion after completion and not being able to stop it......UH marching up and down the field running play after play faster than Texas can even set up a defense.
Keenum and McCoy have played 3 of the same teams this season (UTEP, Ok State, and Texas Tech)
Heres how they compare against the same defenses:
McCoy - 662 yards 5 TDs 3 picks 75% on 68 completions
Keenum 1,337 yards 9 TDs 2 Picks 68% on 121 completions
Heisman Race?? This should be a Heisman blowout for Keenum..........BUT.....I understand the world we live in.....so enjoy the Heisman Colt.........Florida's defense is gonna punish UT

That was an amazing come from behind LITERALLY last second win by the cougars and though the defense was not the best last night we have had OTHER games just this season that the cougar defense WAS the ones who helped win those games! Im so excited for CASE KEENUM AND HE DESERVES ALL EVERYTHING GREAT that is sure to come to him soon!
Im so so proud of the cougars and how they are playing this season...we have had our downfall (UTEP) but we have had so so many nail-bitter omg games that we have won that I will always support my cougars!!

A year like this with a young team in a football hotbed like Houston will result in the recruiting of bigger, faster defensive linemen. That fact alone could make them a top ten team next year, but a big time safety and linebacker would cinch it.
Hey Big 12..cut loose a northern division team and pick up an old member from the south. Let Oklahoma or OK ST play in the north. Or heck...you might just drop Baylor.

It was ugly with no real defense but still a win.
OK, City of Houston, fill the stadium each home game.

Keenum has said he will come back to Houston for his senior year and this was when NFL scouts were coming to the games to check him out. Besides having the heart and ability to win in crazy situations, I think he also wants the chance to be a BCS buster and play in a major bowl.

all this hatred UH is getting from some of these ignorant people is mainly the media's fault!! it's not their fault they didn't know that UH has been playing like this for several years! they have been on the verge of the top 25 for a while, they just finally got everything together and aren't losing silly games. they are finding a way to win game after game!!! that's all you have to do no matter if you're playing florida or san diego st you have to find a way to win the paticular game you're in!! as long as you win then you are deserving of praise.
it's stupid to think that just cause some old dumb as*es sit in a room and give certain teams rankings that those rankings are like the mark of God!!!!!! the rankings don't mean sh*t when you're on the field!! that's why i hat\e the term upset!! it's demeaning because you are basically saying that there wasn't even a point to playing the "underdog" like they don't stand a chance at all of being competitive!! the utep game wasn't an upset!! those fans acted like they forgot how competitive their team has been in the last few years!! they just wanted to act like their team was sh*tty to try and make UH look bad but i'm glad people saw through that horse sh*t!!!
UH can beat anyone when they want to (in a way) hell why do you think okie state has already taken UH off their non-conference schedule for next year!! UH already beat them 2 out of 3, okie state has finally learned a valuble lesson after 3 years of playing the COOGS, you have to play the game no matter what and any team is capable of beating any other!!!
tulsa is not a bad team, they have just had a lot of key injuries this season which may make them seem worst than they actually are. for instance, the qb and key players from the o-line just got back from injuries and played in the game against UH. if this team was on the field against utep and smu i doubt tulsa would have loss those games.
SCREW THE MEDIA, SCREW SOUR FANS LIKE VI, AND SCREW THE BCS!!!! congrats to the teams that just win and do their job and don't give in to this b.s system!!! UH proved their resiliency and CASE KEENUM proved his worth for the heisman!!! GO COOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sorry if i seem angry, i just can't stand ignorance!!

The simple question, would Alabama trade their QB for Keenum, absolutely! How about LSU, of course they would. The only two teams that are not option teams that would not trade their QB for Keenum is Texas and Florida, but I would love to see what Keenum would do with their teams talent, he would make them better. You put Keenum on any team in the country that does not run the option and and he makes that team better. Therefore Keenum deserves the Heisman, he is the best player at his position by far in the country and he does it all game in and game out.
I played college football and was a free safety, I will tell you that Case is not a typical system QB. He has every tool you want in a QB, he is a great QB period. You can't just plug anyone into the Cougars offense and make it work, if it was all about the system then everyone in college should run the same system.

Beyond all that, if (a very big if) the Heisman Trophy award is at all to be taken seriously as an award worth winning. Actually honoring THE BEST offensive player of the season, not just a politically motivated award that awards a very good player from a small group of rich and powerful programs. Then Case Keenum (unless he suddenly self destructs over the coming weeks) deserves the award, period. Look at the numbers and his field leadership and his cool in the most difficult situations. Come on. Should his talent and playing ability, not be recognized simply because he doesnt play for Florida, Texas or Alabama? Nothing wrong with those guys from those schools, but talent is talent and if the Heisman voters want their award to have any integrity at all they should base their vote on talent, not on high profile programs. I think that means they should vote for Keenum, but I dont get a vote.
