For the third straight week, there’s uncertainty about which quarterback will be under center for Cincinnati.

The fourth-ranked Bearcats also hope that for a ninth consecutive game, there isn’t much doubt about the outcome.

Cincinnati will try to stay perfect in Saturday’s prime-time affair while avenging last year’s lopsided loss to Connecticut, which is still looking for its first victory since the death of cornerback Jasper Howard.

The Bearcats have prospered despite star quarterback Tony Pike reinjuring his forearm against South Florida on Oct. 15, with Zach Collaros stepping in and leading the team to easy victories over Louisville and Syracuse.

Collaros often used his scrambling ability to go 22 for 28 for 295 yards and four touchdowns on the road against the Orange last Saturday, leading Cincinnati (8-0, 4-0 Big East) to a 28-7 win.

“He’s definitely a kid that understands what’s going on out there,” Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly said .

Considering Collaros has thrown seven touchdowns without an interception in two starts in place of Pike, the Bearcats have no reason to rush the return of their senior signal-caller, who led the team to the Orange Bowl last season and has thrown for multiple touchdowns in all six of his starts this year.

But Kelly said Pike would practice this week as he continues to heal after a plate and screws were replaced in his arm, which was broken last season.

“It really would depend on how he practices, because he hasn’t been in there handing off and moving on the perimeter,” Kelly said, before the start of practice Tuesday. “It may be the case that we think he’s 75 percent there, we can’t start him but he could come in in certain situations. That’s a scenario that’s possible.

“I would prefer that not to be the case. I would prefer him to be 100 percent and able to start.”

While the spread no-huddle offense that is scoring nearly 40 points per game has gotten most of the attention and boosted Cincinnati’s average margin of victory to almost four touchdowns, the team’s defense has also been impressive. The Bearcats’ last two opponents have combined for 17 points, and neither gained 300 total yards.

The combination has led to the program’s best start since it began 9-0 in 1951 - a school record it can match with a win.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” linebacker J.K. Schaffer said. “We’re right where we want to be.”

Cincinnati needs to keep winning, however, not only to maintain its hopes of reaching the BCS title game, but also to keep an inside track for a second straight Big East championship. Pittsburgh is also 4-0 in conference play, and the teams don’t meet until the regular-season finale Dec. 5.

Connecticut (4-4, 1-3) challenged the Panthers in Pittsburgh before losing 24-21 on a last-second field goal Oct. 10. That was another in a series of heartbreaking defeats for the Huskies, whose four losses have each come by four or fewer points.

Perhaps none was tougher to swallow than Saturday’s 28-24 home loss to Rutgers, UConn’s second by that score since Howard was stabbed to death in an on-campus incident Oct. 18. After the Huskies took a three-point lead with 38 seconds left, Rutgers scored the game-winning touchdown moments later on an 81-yard pass.

“Could we be (undefeated)? Yeah, but the reality of it is that we’re 4-4,” UConn coach Randy Edsall said. “And the reality of it is, we’ve got to understand how to finish these games off and make the plays at the end in order to win.”

After facing the death of one of their teammates, the Huskies will now play the remainder of the season without starting quarterback Cody Endres, who injured his shoulder against Rutgers and will require surgery.

“If the pain continues to come I know no one on our team is going to give up or quit,” running back Jordan Todman said. “There are some teams where they get broken down and they keep losing and losing thinking that maybe they’ll get hot and not continue to fight, but our team’s not like that. We’re going to fight on the field, we’re going to scratch and crawl.”

Junior Zach Frazer replaced Endres on Saturday, going 21 for 46 for 333 yards and a touchdown and leading a fourth-quarter comeback, but he also threw three interceptions.

A 150-yard, two-touchdown performance by current Indianapolis Colts running back Donald Brown led UConn to a 40-16 win over Cincinnati Oct. 25, 2008. Pike returned from his initial arm injury in that game but only played the first half.

The Huskies have lost by double digits in all three of their previous visits to Nippert Stadium, where the Bearcats have won 10 straight and 20 of 22.

Good Sport I think your comment was right on the money. Though I wont call Pike's happiness into question here (only because I gotta believe he wishes only the best for the TEAM & not jus' himself) I will say now that he's healthy I think that's exactly what they should do. A little mixin' & matchin' of the two. Especially against teams like WVa & Pitt. I mean it can only help the BEARCATS to keep them off their toes with confusion as to which is goin' to take the snap & which will sit back. Also throw a little play in there where you put both QB's on the field at the same time to really f*ck with their heads. Maybe that's askin' too much but I figure with their talent you gotta throw some kinda head buster in there.

Also as much as I love my OSU BUCKEYES & I do, stop tryin' to steal Brian Kelly away from the southern OHIO area. Jim Tressel is a godsend out that way & as long as he's there I don't think you gotta worry about much. Better yet wrry bout that fateful day when it will be OSU BUCKEYES VS UC BEARCATS FOR THE NATIONAL TITLE. Then we'll see a true battle for OHIO.

Well said, richardh. Avg. 10 wins per season and 5 straight Big Ten crowns is not bad at all. I agree with that.

But Brian Kelly is the equivalent of that pitching ace for whom the New York Yankees will spend the entire GDP of a third world country to put in the pin stripes. He's that good.

This is no longer about how good or sucky Jim Tressell is. This is about who can secure the services of Brian Kelly. You can get him, or you can flop like a dead mackerel trying to coach against him.

Cincy should NOT be in the top 10! Anyone who gives up 45 points has no defense. No defense, no championship. Almost lost to a basketball school!

Congratulations to the Cincinnati Bearcats team and fans on a fantastic season to this point. I am an Ohio State Buckeye fan and enjoy hearing the banter go back and forth about the Bearcats. No matter what anyone says I am proud to be a fan of the Buckeyes and am very proud that we have a coach like Jim Tressel. I find it ridiculous to hear the people talk about replacing him. Jim Tressel will coach at Ohio State until he decides not to. The man is a class act and our university is lucky to have him, even with some of our "fair weather" fans wanting somebody "better". Brian Kelly is a good coach and would be a good consideration for Ohio State WHEN Coach Tressel decides he wants to improve his golf game to a point he can compete with Ellen. People need to realize that there is more to football than just winning. And I don't think averaging 10 wins and going after our 5th straight Big Ten championship is doing very poor....

Cincy is a great story, fun team to watch. Lets see if Cincy can maintain this momentum before crowning them the beast of the NCAA. You guys knock the SEC and Big 12 . Teams in those divisions have been winning on a regular basis for years. Bama, UF, LSU, OU, Texas to name a few. Cincy needs a solid 5 year run, lets hope they can do it. The NCAA needs a better teeam representing Ohio than OSU.

Frankly, I'm tired of the SEC arguments. I am tired of the SEC in general. As a conference, they are the Yankees/Red Sox/Cubs of college football--in your face, media-loved. Instead of arguing over who is the best, I'll just put it this way: I have watched (or, somewhat more accurately, listened to) UC football for more than two decades. I remember, I believe, 1993 when Lance Harp and David Small led the Cats to an 8-3 record but no bowl. That was a thrilling year because they were successful. As a kid, I fantasized about this school winning on a national level. Two years ago was amazing with Ben Mauk putting UC in the spotlight. Last year was the pinnacle, I thought--there was no way it could've gotten any better. Then we have this year, which is, suffice to say, a heck of a lot of fun. I pray this streak continues and that the Cats finish undefeated; but in the mean time, let us enjoy this season. As a Bengals, Bearcats, Buckeyes, and UD Flyers football fan, recent years have been stressful. OSU has underachieved. The Bengals are, well, the Bengals. With the Bucks just thinking about playing football games and not some national title, it's fun to watch again. The Bengals are playing well--so that's fun. And UC is having a once-in-a-liftime season. Simply put, football is fun again. Go Cats.

Cincy's defense needs to be tougher to play with the big boys. They did lose 10 out of 11 starters this year, several of whom went in the NFL draft (at least two plus the punter).

Their offense is very different with Collaros instead of Pike as QB. That is a tribute to the great coaching staff. They look like a different team. Talk about adjusting. You lose a starting QB who was being mentioned in the Heisman vote and your second stringer absolutely lights teams up. Pike didn't look happy on the sidelines. They should work in a few plays with both of them on the field. Let the other team guess who is going to take the snap.

I have a feeling Cincy will be seeing either Boise St. or TCU in what very well could be THE best bowl game since Boise knocked off Oklahoma.

where was all the bla bla bla on schedule strgngth a couple years ago when UC trounced Oregon st. and then oregon st beat oregon and Oregon beat USC.....PAC 10 - please give me a break

and to the moron above that said why is UC even considered in the talk - ddduuuhhhh do the math - it's called "unbeaten"

and give me a break - texas - is just barely squeaking by and watch Alabama will get nailed before the end of the year...and again Florida is the only real deal....Alabam aint that great and neither is texas

read some facts and look at the schedules of all the top teams before making these moronic statements

and than you will understand why all the top coaches are AFRAID to play Boise st....just like the big 10 refuses to play UC...

Dudes - you can whine all you want but the landscape is changing - so get used to it.....and look at where ND, Nebraska, Oklahoma, etc.etc. etc. and all the other (former) top powerhouses are now ranked...and where USC should be ranked etc.

Another brain fart Michael H? Did you forget to connect brain to mouth before posting? The top 3 SEC teams would have a difficult time with Cincy, Boise State, Stanford, Oregon, USC, or Vassar. They are overrated and undefeated only because of the SEC officials protecting the top 2 teams.

whatever ya'all call it - you're washed up (except for Florida which is in a totally different class)..because they're coached by - yea ya'all guessed it Urban Meyer who is a graduate of University Cincinnati and where he played football , and from Ohio

SEC - your best days are in the past - get over it.....

The Buckeyes could not match up with the Bearcats's offense. Kelly would have OSU's secondary totally confused. The great Buckeye defense would spend too much time on field and OSU's offense is not creative enough to fool the Cats' defense.

There's this one guy in the Columbus Dispatch boards called "Hire Brian Kelly" who is always preaching that Ohio State dump Jim Tressell and hire Brian Kelly away from Cincy. You know what? "Hire Brian" doesn't sound as kooky as he used to a few weeks ago.

Brian Kelly absolutely will win the National Championship. Maybe not this year and not with the Bearcats, but he will win that crystal football inside of five years.

I want it to be the Buckeyes he's coaching when he finally does it.

Not a good defensive performance. However, good teams i.e. Texas, Alabama, and Florida have had many close games that came down to the final play. I would not be surprised if TCU and Boise jump them this week in the polls. Thankfully this performance came against a mediocore team and adjustments can be made before WV or PITT. UC is a better team on the road and there last game is at PITT who also struggled against UCONN on the road but came back to win by a field goal in the end.

First off let me say GO BEARCATS!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAD LOVE TO CINCINNATI ALWAYS!!!

With that said let me start off by saying a lot of you are a bit presumptuous & slightly ridiculous arent you? I say this because I'm hearing a lot about how the Bearcats are or arent BCS Title material when we're still what, 2 games away from the conference title. I mean lets focus on one game at a time first or at least stay within the realm of whats next. Right now my focus is on can they win their next game WVa & then go on from there. Now if I'm jumpin' ahead like most of you seem to be doin' I'm jumpin' to whether or not they can win their conference title. I say yes unless they're goin' to be playin' the way they played against UConn tonight. What we need to see is 4 quarters of pure balls out football. If playin' that hard means you run the score up to the 80's then run it up & don't stop playin'. In this case they ran it ahead by 20 & let UConn come back within 2. That shouldnt happen at all. I dont care what team you play.

Also to you haters & doubters
Collaros in his 3 starts since takin' over for the much beloved (& for good reason) Pike, in addition to havin' the offensive weapons he has on the field he can count himself among those 480 in passing yards 232 in rushing for which 75 of those belong to him with 2 TDs & in his first two games since takin' over for Pike, even though they werent this they were in essence. Same skill, same decision making prowess, same coolness beyond actual experience in the rush & when pressured. I'd say as far as BCS Title talks go I'll let his mad game do the talkin'. But thats me.

WOW! Apparently I hit a nerve with my last comment. All your sorry comments equals a HA HA to me. Yes Brian is a representative to the U of Cincinnati's fan base. Probably one of the most loyal. Not many Bearcat fans can tell you the low points of our program. For me it was back in 1987, seeing the Bearcats get ripped apart by Div 1-AA Indiana State 47-0 in Terre Haute. Or maybe the most embarrassing loss of all time 81-0 in 1991 to Penn State. I've been there for the bad, but I'm sure enjoying the good. But before throwing stones at me for my comments, look into your own team’s history and see what you bring out of the septic. PEACE OUT and GO BEARCATS.

Dont worry about all of these Big East haters. The same arguments were made against WVU before beating both UGA and OU so dont worry about it. Whoever represents the Big East in a BCS game be it a nc game or not will represent the conference admirably. Most Big East haters are ACC fans who expected the conference to dry up after they bought up some of our talent, but it didnt happen thanks in large part to WVU. Now Pitt is on the way up as are Cinci, Uconn, and USF. Another victory in a BCS game this year wont shut the haters up but at least it will keep the Automatic Bid for the conference. Hard to say a team doesnt deserve an automatic bid to a game they keep winning!

FIRST THING I I WOULD LIKE TO SAY is my hats off to coach e and the uconn staff for showin some deep from within heart these past 3 weeks. under the circumstances they have faced to rally and fight every game is motivational in itself. I argued with a friend about how good this husky team is with this impressive performance tonight. u cant judge a team sometimes on w/l records but judge it by 5 losses by 15 points. Uconn fans u have a great coach in coach e and good luck the rest of the way. i hate to say it but u have a damn good basketball coach too but we will see ya again watch out for mr. stephenson....... and UC pigskin... say hello to number 4 cats fans cause thats where we are headed... Haven't read all the comments, but has anyone mentioned that Alabama had to block 2 field goals versus a very average Tennessee team to win 12-10 at home. Tough games happen. Florida had to block a FG by South Carolina 3 years ago to win and eventually win the National Championship. UC defense was shaky, but as Herbstreit said, UC's offense can hang with anyone in the country. Just take it one game at a time. UC will pounce West Virginia. Boise State's win versus Oregon doesn't look as good now and TCU is so overrated. UC is good, so shut your pieholes non-believers!
