TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP)—When they last met, Alabama vs. LSU was all about Nick Saban coaching against his former team.

This year, there’s more pressing business: keeping in the mix to play for the national title.

Two Top 10 Southeastern Conference teams meet Saturday, with a pair formidable defenses and one Heisman Trophy candidate in a game that might be low on points if not drama.

Yes, again.

The first such rendezvous this season resulted in one touchdown and a 13-3 victory by Tim Tebow and No. 1 Florida over then-No. 4 LSU.

Saturday’s matchup between ninth-ranked LSU and No. 3 Alabama has all the makings of a similarly defensive clash. And the stakes are at least as high.

It’s enough to make swashbuckling LSU coach Les Miles embrace a kick.

“If you punt it and go play defense, that’s a good choice,” Miles said. “There is nothing wrong with that.”

Warm up those legs, P.J. Fitzgerald and Derek Helton. The way these defenses are playing, it could be a busy day for the punters.

Alabama (8-0, 5-0) allows the fifth-fewest points a game in the nation and has given up just one touchdown in the last three games. Only Texas is stingier against the run.

LSU (7-1, 4-1) sports the No. 7 scoring defense, has given up 36 points in its last four games and is coming off a shutout of Tulane.

The game could determine who plays Florida in the SEC championship game. It will definitely be Alabama if the Tide wins. If the Tigers win, they clinch the rematch with wins against Mississippi and Arkansas.

Either way, the survivor is still in the mix for a national title shot.

“In a game like this, you go out on the field and whoever plays the hardest and whoever does the little things right the most consistently throughout the game, that’s who will win the game,” Tide linebacker Rolando McClain said. “You can’t really focus on ‘we’ve got to make this big play’ or ‘we’ve got to do this or we’ve got to do that’. We have to focus on the game plan, perfect it and execute it.”

Miles looks at an Alabama team led by McClain and nose guard Terrence Cody on defense and relentless runner Mark Ingram—widely considered a Heisman candidate—on offense and concludes: “There are no weaknesses.”

The defense certainly hasn’t shown many. The Tide allows only 65 yards a game rushing and has given up only one touchdown on the ground in the past seven games. Alabama’s 23 sacks are tied for the league lead with Mississippi and Florida, which racked up five sacks in its meeting with LSU.

LSU’s defense has allowed only one touchdown in the last two games, and that came in the final 3 seconds against Auburn.

“I think that both defenses are very good and the structures are sound and solid,” Miles said. “They play aggressively, and they make tackles. I enjoy watching good college football, and I think certainly that’s what will be played this Saturday.”

The key to stopping Alabama’s offense has been to try to slow down Ingram, who had at least 140 yards in three straight games before being held to 99 against Tennessee two weeks ago going into an open date. The Tide squeaked by in that one, winning 12-10 after Cody blocked two field goals in the fourth quarter.

Ingram has been impressed by an LSU defense led by linebacker Kelvin Sheppard and defensive backs Chad Jones and Patrick Peterson.

“They are big and fast, strong and physical,” he said. “The scheme they play, they do it really well. They are coached up really well. They all do their assignments. They all get to the ball and they make it really hard for offenses to have success.”

LSU has had plenty of success in Tuscaloosa, where the Tigers have won four straight. Alabama’s overtime victory last year in Baton Rouge snapped a five-game LSU winning streak in the rivalry.

One of these two teams has represented the West in the SEC championship game three of the past four seasons.

“I can tell you that our football team wants to compete for the SEC Western Division championship every year, and certainly that’s this game,” Miles said.

His teams haven’t fared well lately against Top 10 teams, losing three straight after winning six in a row.

Alabama has won five such regular season games in a row, but lost in the SEC championship game and the Sugar Bowl last year to Top 10 teams.

But Saban has stuck to his standard message this week: Focus on the process, not the results.

“I know it’s a result world, but great competitors don’t focus on the results they focus on what they need to do to get the results,” the Alabama coach said. “Sometimes that’s difficult to do with a lot of the external things that we live with, but that’s the most important thing to playing your best. Maybe we were affected by that a little bit in the last couple of games.”

    Defense wins championships!

    joshua z,

Seriously, Alabama was suppose to be the best team last year, but what happened they lost to Florida, then got spanked by Utah.....Texas might not have played anyone, but when they do they always seem to find a way to win. You just hate Florida and Texas because they are favored over Alabama. I like Texas Florida Alabama Arkansas and Oregon. I dont like USC LSU or OSU. I am glad all three won but ultimately Florida or Alabama have to lose out of the NC. For the NCAA not to have another year like the past few, and talk about playoffs it will most likely be Florida and Texas for the NC. I do wish a playoff was set so the true NC is crowned. Oh and every big team plays cupcake teams for guarenteed victories yes Texas does but so does Alabama. Virginia Tech is in the ACC a joke to the SEC if Alabama would have lost it would have lost its credibility. Talk smack about Texas and Florida as much as you want, but your team Alabama is just as guilty of scheduling cupcake teams. Oh and the VT game was scheduled b4 VT was ranked....Think about it. All big teams choose to play small teams over other big teams. Texas is 5-0 in BCS Bowls with one NC over USC, Florida has 3 NC it the past 4 years. LSU has the other one. Alabama has lost to Utah last year. I ask again who has more credibility to play for NC to end the decade?

I don't like Florida because of the numbers the BCS don't reflect the schedules period and Texas is cool with me. Greg Mc is from Texas so I love those guys, but lets be serious Mac Brown do not won't any part of Nick Saban trust me.

Hook em more like get stuck.

What is that guy watching on TV? That was last year friends things change vendettas get formed. But hey do not take my word for it keep watching Texas V Alabama NC Alabama over Texas by 17 points.

    Then Utah who??????
Why because Texas have not been introduced to MT Cody. :0

Casie you are a joke. What team do you think was disappointed last year. Obviously Utah was much more disappointed than Bama was last year as Utah should have played for a NC game. Bama lost in the SEC title game so they were lucky to be asked to a BCS game. Utah humiliated Bama even though they had nothing to play for. It was obvious that Utah was better than Bama and frankly anyone in the SEC. I am confused why you think the SEC is such a tough conference. They have proved to be nothing more than average. They have 3 ranked teams this year (6th best conference in terms of ranked teams top to bottom), they were 5-6 verse the ACC last year and they were 11-11 verse the top 7 conferences. You seem to be under the illusion that the SEC is really strong.

If WVA is such an average team, tell me why they put up the most yards against Auburn all year. No one has come close. By your standards, if the game had any meaning, WVA would have beat Auburn by 30 points.

You are such a hypocrite. You state that Bama would have beaten Utah if it was a NC game. How is that any different than me saying that TN and LSU would have beaten Bama if it wasn't for the refs. By your logic, If TN and LSU played Bama on a neutral field than both TN and LSU would have won.

You can't come close to my IQ. You are a welder for Christs sake. You are nothing in my mind...NOTHING. You are a joke. If I saw you at any game, I would gut you like a fish. I would laugh as I spill your insides onto the grassy knoll. I would then take your wife and stick her in the azz with a hot poker. I would laught he whole time...LOL

bill: utah was pretty good last season, and its not that no bowl other than the title game is unimportant, just a bowl vs a non bcs opponent, who everyone expects you to beat with nothing to gain, while the non bcs team you are playing is in the biggest game in school history. if you win, everyone says, oh course you won, you were playing a non bcs team who was overrated. if you lose, everyone says you stink because you lost to a non bcs team who you should have beat. its almost a no win situation

Amazing, Phil, how Alabama can only get inspired to win when it's only in the bowl for the NC. Guess they haven't been inspired in a while. All the other SEC teams kick butt usually, or at least play their hardest, in their bowl games. Alabama is special though; either the NC or they're gonna be uninterested and sulk. They just can't simply say that Utah was a pretty darn good team last season. I support the SEC, but Utah impressed me last year.

phil; with Alabama's 2009 schedule to date, wv would be 5-4 or, with losses to va tech, arkansas, lsu, and either ole miss or tennessee. they already lost to auburn, turnovers or no turnovers, they lost.

phil: ANY of these teams would have beat utah in a bcs title game last year: florida, oklahoma, usc, texas, Alabama. yes, in a title game, Bama would have beat them. florida was the best team last year hands down, they would have beat utah by 14-20 points. florida played 12 winning teams last year(beat 11) thats more than anyone, they played 11 bowl teams last year(beat 10)again, that is more than any other team, they beat two #1's, they embarrased most of their opponents, and their 1 loss was by 1 point to a team that finished in the top 15, and ole miss never lost a game by more than 7 last year, and all 4 of their losses were by a combined 18 points. ole miss easily beat #6 texas tech(who only lost once to oklahoma, and beat texas) in the cotton bowl. no other team was close to florida last year

phil: never said i did not respect boise or utah, just that playing them in a bowl is meaningles to ANY team unless its a title game. i respect the fact that they, and tcu could as they say," beat anyone on a given day", but i do not care about what a team can do on a given day, i care about a season's worth of work. compared to the teams that play on the sec or pac-10, boise, utah , and tcu haven't earned it, i do not feel ANY of them could do better than 9-3 or10-2 with an sec schedule.

WVA is not a powerhouse but they are better than most of the teams that Bama has played all year. Keep in mind that WVA totally gave the game to Auburn this year. They managed to have 6 turnovers (5 int and 1 fumble) and Auburn still needed to score two TDs in the 4th quarter to comeback and win that game, despite being outgained by WVA and having less 1st downs. It will be interesting to see if Cincinnati can contain the offense that racked up 509 yds against Auburn, the most against Auburn all year including their games against Miss, LSU, Arkansas, Kentucky, TN, and Miss St.

Casie - You can't be respected unless you respect others. You blatantly called out Boise and Utah and indicated you didn't respect their team. Funny - I have a few friends that grew up in Utah and they were very dissappointed to have to play Alabama last year. They believed (and rightly so) that they were the best team in the nation and should have played Oklahoma for the national championship (instead of a team that lost to a non-ranked opponent). they were down right pissed to have to play a team as lowly as Alabama. It turns out they were right. They humiliated Bama and showed how vastly superior their team was. Frankly Bama didn't deserve to be on the same field with them. Until you give respect to these teams, it's hard to have any respect for the people like you...especially guys that are welders and such...I mean what do these tools know. I've heard ignorant Bama fans that think that Cincinnati sucks, just because they haven't been on the national scene for awhile. Anyone that knows anything about football knows the talent Cincinnati has and they have a QB that is better than every QB in the SC except maybe Tebow (Don't think so, go look at the draft prospects for 2010). They also have a wide receiver that is as good as anyone in the SEC (Ginyard), not to mention a stout defense. SEC fans are too ignorant to acknowledge and they will blanketly say, "Oh Cincy would finish neat the bottom of the SEC if they were in the SEC". This just shows the level of ignorance of the SEC fans. Need I remind you morons that the SEC was 5-6 verse the SEC last year and 11-11 verse the top 7 conferences. Please explain that

bill: and of those 6-8 team i would say that all of them, have had ups and downs! usc was garbage for all of the 90's before thie last 6 or 7 year run, florida was been consistant in that run from 1992-now, ohio st has been pretty good most if those years, lsu was average at best in the 90's and was 7-5 last year, texas and oklahoma have only been in dominant fashion for the last 6-8 years, florida st was real good until the recent, neraska and has been average as of the last several years. michigan and miami has been consistant until the last couple years.

as you can see none of those teams, over the last 17 year stretch, have been head and shoulders ahead of Alabama in every season. only a couple of those teams have more than 1 national title in that 17 year span, so, as you can see, its not near as bad being a Bama fan the last 17 years, as it has been to be a fan of about 90% of the other schools out there!

    ROLL TIDE!

bill: you say what has Bama done lately, and it must have been hard on Bama fans since 1992. no, actually is has not been too bad, i will say that since 1992, only about 6 or 8 teams in the nation have had more success in that time. since 1992 Alabama has had seven 10+ win seasons(and are on their way to # eight), been to 12 bowls and are on the way to #13(won 6 bowls), been to 5 sec title games(on the way to # 6), and has won 128 games(average 8 per year). thats not too bad, and Alabama will be better than that, competing for more bowls, sec and national titles for the forseeable future!

Starpower-must be rough to be supporting 2 under-achieving teams, Alabama and Dallas. Maybe that will change this year; I doubt it though. Dallas has the Saints on their schedule.

casie c- I'm not trying to be derogatory, but that meaningless team (Utah) was undefeated last season and showed Alabama why they were undefeated. Statements like that do not make sense to people who support teams who are elated to be in bowl games anywhere. I have a lot of relatives in north Alabama, and it must have been really hard on you guys since '92. Everytime I talk to or see my relatives, I hear the same old rhetoric; 12 national championships, so many 10-win seasons, etc. I say what have you done lately. When your team represents the SEC in bowls, you should always try to show the dominance of the conference; not be disappointed about who you're playing. I don't buy that about last year's Sugar Bowl and not being inspired. Alabama just got dominated from the start to finish.
