TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—The Arizona State Sun Devils hoped Southern California might have a letdown after a big victory over Oregon.

So much for that plan.

Drubbed by 27 points in Eugene last weekend, the 12th-ranked Trojans figure to be in a bad mood when they show up for Saturday night’s game at Sun Devil Stadium. The loss dropped USC from fourth in The Associated Press Top 25 to a tie for fourth place in the Pac-10 and seemingly eliminated the Trojans (6-2, 3-2 Pac-10) as a national title contender.

“We can’t worry about USC,” Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson said. “We have to worry about ourselves. Their track record after they lose is pretty darn good if you take a look at it.”

Indeed, USC hasn’t had back-to-back losses since a four-game skid early in Pete Carroll’s debut season in 2001. The Trojans snapped that slump with a 48-17 rout of ASU, and two years later they bounced back from a loss to California by defeating the Sun Devils 37-17.

USC has been here before. Two years ago, USC appeared to be out of contention when it suffered its second Pac-10 loss in late October, also at Oregon.

But the Ducks, hampered by a knee injury to quarterback Dennis Dixon, collapsed in November, and the Trojans steamed past them and into the Rose Bowl.

“The ability to return and deal with the finish of the season has been something that’s been pretty unique for us,” Carroll said. “We need to see if we can rediscover that again.”

Carroll said his team is “on the road to recovery.” This week, the road leads to the desert and a meeting with the mediocre Sun Devils (4-4, 2-3).

For ASU, there never seems to be a good time to face USC. The Trojans have won nine straight over the Sun Devils, their longest active streak over a Pac-10 rival.

The average score during the streak: USC 38, ASU 18.

Meanwhile, Arizona State is 3-27 against the Top 25 since 2000—and 1-6 under Erickson.

“We have to get one of these wins against a top-tier opponent,” quarterback Danny Sullivan said. “Let this be the week, get good preparation and be ready to go.”

If ASU hopes to end its futility against the Trojans, it likely will need another standout performance from its defense.

Led by senior linebacker Mike Nixon, the Sun Devils are giving up 19 points per game, second in the conference. Their run defense concedes 80 yards per game, No. 1 in the Pac-10, and last week ASU limited California star Jahvid Best to 63 yards, or barely half his average.

“They’ve pretty much taken the running game away from teams for the most part,” Carroll said.

The Trojans are hurting at tailback, with Joe McKnight and Allen Bradford limited in practice this week.

McKnight has a sore ankle and pain behind his right knee, possibly related to his hamstring. He leads the Trojans with 712 yards rushing and seven touchdowns.

Bradford has a sore right knee. He has 397 yards rushing and four TDs, averaging 7 yards per carry.

If McKnight and Bradford can’t play, C.J. Gable may shoulder most of the load.

The Sun Devils need to stop USC because their offense could struggle against the Trojans’ defense. ASU’s attack has mustered more than 24 points only once in its last six games—and that was when it put up 27 against woeful Washington State.

But USC’s defense isn’t quite so formidable as it looked early on. After giving up a total of 43 points through five games, the Trojans have conceded 27, 36 and 47 in their last three.

This is USC’s final road game, and Sun Devil Stadium may not seem quite so intimidating as Autzen Stadium was last weekend.

According to NCAA statistics, ASU is playing to 62.1 percent of Sun Devil Stadium’s 71,705 capacity. That ranks 100th in the nation, but a bigger crowd is expected for Saturday night’s game.

After the trip to Tempe, USC closes the regular season against Stanford, UCLA and Arizona. Surprisingly, the Cardinal and the Wildcats are ahead of USC in the conference standings heading into the stretch.

But if USC wins its remaining games, it will give itself a shot at an eighth straight Bowl Championship Series berth.

Carroll said he hasn’t spent much time figuring out the Trojans’ revised postseason outlook; instead, he’s stressed what the Trojans have to do to beat ASU.

“We don’t need the long-range incentives,” Carroll said. “We need the short range opportunities to be maximized.”

USC is in a rebuilding stage and its true that barkley was 7/22 passing. He's still very green and needs to mature w/time.The way i see it is coach carroll needs to change his offense,to accomidate each and every team they play. All the head coaches know that sc's offense will stay the same and there defense already knows what there going to do to counter sc's offense .The problem lives with the offense coordinater to make the adjustments to the opponets defense,he needs to use a pistol or wildcat backfield once in a while just to keep the other teams off balance.Use some new imagination like boise st does or other teams.USC could become a great team again with just a litle help in preparing there team and it all lies on the coaching staff to make the correct changes.FIGHT-ON-TROJANS

sasmaster, I don't know if what you're saying is true, but I will say that even with the replay this year that officiating throughout the NCAA football program has really stunk. Even a many TV replays have shown that various calls from certain plays under review should have been overturned. Keep in mind also that the replay officials see many if not all the views you on TV see.

USC seems to be the only top football program that refs aren't trying to help win but in fact trying to help make them lose. Florida, Alabama, Texas, and Iowa have been getting the most ridiculously favorable calls their whole season. Alabama with the mount cody bull@#$%. HE HAD HIS HELMET OFF WHILE THE BALL WAS STILL IN PLAY. blatant 15 yard penalty and a chip shot for tennessee had they gotten the field goal they deserved. Oklahoma State CLEARLY forcing and recovering a fumble inside the texas 20 only down 3 at that point in the game to not only have the refs rule the runner down but DECIDED TO NOT EVEN REVIEW IT!!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? THAT SHOULD NEVER BE THE CASE THAT NOT REVIEWING IT IS THE RIGHT DECISION. What I am hoping to see this week is Iowa not getting the favorable calls anymore now that they have a loss and aren't in the title chase and see how they can play. BUT REFS WHO CALL THE USC GAMES...... omgg they always seem to find ways to stall USC drives and then miss blatant penalties against the other team on calls they have been making against USC the whole game. Not that USC is the best team in the nation. They clearly aren't BUT its a lot harder to win when refs are against you winning instead of trying to push you to the national championship to make the conference look better and Im assuming would probably up their pay. Either way I think college football has the most biased officials of any sport and they are corrupting what is supposed to be the most "intense sport" because of the every week matters style. But every week doesn't matter when the refs are trying to decide the outcome of the games rather than the teams...... but I guess for the teams on top they will take a championship however they can get. especially florida and their dirty ass players. eye gouging?! Urban Meyer is a model coach..... sike

#33 If your OSU title stands for Ohio State University, they beat your butts!!!! They also beat Oregon State so you lose there as well. Sour grapes to me and USC is in a rbuilding year. I always thought USC was ranked too high because of the unknowns, but they still have defeated some great teams. Played far more top 25 teams and a far tougher schedule than Texas who will probably back their way into the BCS title game. Both FLA and ALA have tougher schedules as well, but as we all know, two teams from the same conference cannot play for the BCS title.

Around here, people assume USC will be the No. 1 ranked team starting next season. It makes sense with the players they have coming back, however, don't count on it with thtis current set of offensive and defensive coordinators. The coaching staff needs rebuilding after the loss of Holtz and Sarkesian. Look at this year, USC has one good game followed by a bad game. That's because the other teams have figured out the USC offense on film after each good game. The offensive coordinator needs to bring more than one set of offensive schemes to every game and practise. USC was lucky to win this last game.

#35 you are absolutely right about it being the worst game I have ever watched in person because it was controlled 100% by the refs. last week's ASU game was no different. meanwhile, there are games were not a single holding penalty will be called. what the refs in Tempe did to destroy any and all momentum (for both teams) will all but destroy this sport. anyone who didn't watch the game (or last week's ASU/CAL game) can't know what this was like to watch. virtually every first down USC gained was taken away and ASU kept being handed gifts. it seemed that they had 14 chances to go in from the 9 yard line and all they got were 3 points. and they shot off fireworks. meanwhile, USC goes in the end zone for a touchdown and is flagged for excessive celebration. coupled with what we watched at ALA/LSU, there is no question in my mind that this season's NCAAF is completely rigged at a very high level. i feel for all the players and fans whose fun is being taken away by blatant ref involvement.

what the article doesnt tell us is that the refs and tv timeouts controlled the tempo of this game. It ruined drives for both teams. What shocked me is the fact that ASU came into the game leading the conference in penalties and somehow they avoided big penalties the whole game. The boxscore stats show even, but i was at that game and it seemed that any big play had a flag against SC on it. It was one of the worst games to see in person. The play calling for SC was horrific. I am fed up with the decisions made with all the talent on the offensive side of the ball. ASU has a good defense, but not that good.
If the SC offense plays like this next week, we will see a 3 loss season. Stanford can score some points. So it could be another oregon state shootout at home.

mike o, you're just jealous because USC owns asu asses for the 10th time in a row & nothing you say or do can take that a way. All that matter at the end of the day is who got the W & who got the L. Even with our offense depleted by injuries we still beat your sun devils. Get over over I'd figure by now you guys are use to getting a L for isLOSER at the end of every USC game.

Florida plays 1 ranked team all season and then gets to play for the national championship?

    Texas plays 2 ranked opponents?

What a joke. Any of the top 6 Pac10 teams would pound either of those pretenders.

Trojan and Pac 10 fan. What a powerhouse conference!!! Trojan boy barely gets by ASU and now the team that beat you last week looses to Stanford. Quit worrying about everyone's non conference schedule and just win your conference games. This conference is so bad it's not even work discussing in comparison to the ACC SEC and Big 12. Hello Rose Bowl and Outback bowl for your top teams. The national championship will be the sec winner and Texas. What a joke you conference is---does anyone have a complete team--offense, defense, and special teams? The answer is NO!

Here's how it will be at the end.

    Final Pac10 Standings will be:

    Oregon State 7-2
    Oregon 6-3
    AZ 6-3
    Stanford 6-3
    USC 6-3

Yes, USC is struggling, but true fans hold on to hope against all odds. They have played well in afew games and if they could regain that form, the Rose Bowl is not all that unlikely. Here's the scenario (I could be wrong on teh second tie breaker):

    1. USC wins out
    2. Arizona wins out except at USC - this would include a win over Oregon
    3. Oregon wins out except against a ranked Arizona team

USC, Oregon and Arizona all finsih 7-2 in the PAC-10 and I think the next tie breaker is total record and USC does not have a non-conference loss. It is not as unlikely as you think - although the hme game against Arizona is by no means a foregone conclusion the way it looked 3 months ago. I hold onto hope, but reality tells me that 7 years of PAC-10 championships is better than any one else has every done and Trojan fans will have to be satisfied with that.

ASU is the worst team in the PAC 10 ( actually 7th) and should have won this game along with the game against Georgia and Cal putting them at 7-2 (5-1). I love Barkley but USC sucks and is (and has been) the most overrated team in the PAC-10 for the last 20 years or more. If Weber hadn't strained his crotch (what the hell was he doing anyway), We'd actually be challenging Oregon for the Pac-10 title.

Woof D pretty good 2 cents.

I would add Jeremy Bates sucks as a play caller. He is not even worthy of Sark's shadow. Which is funny because I thought Sark was a schizo in his play calling. Bates never seems to tailor game plans to the opponents D. Maybe the sole exception of the ND game. I thought that was pretty good.

I understand he's working with a Fresh QB. But the funny thing is he keeps changing the play script on Barkley almost every game. Barkley is increasingly showing discomfort or diffidence in the schemes. It's seems like he's forcing the play because he can't check it. I'm pretty sure it was Bates idea to run the ball 8 billion times up the middle in the second half.

Further, Bates obsesses on plays that don't work. Tonight, he must of ran that weakside rollout and throw to TE or slot receiver at least 5 times. What did we get? Dropped balls and an interception.

In the end, Bates has managed to create this one dimensional offense that is readable on almost every down. We might as well run a spread. We have the personnel.

Also, I agree that Barkley is definitely regressing over the last few games.

@Lind - If Oregon loses another game, USC loses the head to head tie-breaker. The only way USC could get the Pac-10 crown is for Oregon to lose two more games, and to win out. I'd rather Oregon had won out and made it to the Rose Bowl, and if USC could win out, they might get invited to the Fiesta or Orange Bowl...

The offense is suffering from three problems.

    1. USC has a big playbook as any other school does, but the number of sets they're utilizing each week is extremely limited because they're starting a true freshman.

    2. But worse than that, the coaches seemingly ignore an entire series of plays from the previous week, while trying new ones. Did you see the wheel route? Did you see the three wideout - wide receiver screen? Where was the hitch and go?

    3. And finally, Barkley is making all sorts of true freshman mistakes: He holds on the ball for way too long and he will lock on for the homerun throw when the field is empty right in front of him. This game, Barkley finally suffered a series of mental errors by letting the clock run out twice (the first one the coach called a time out before it could run out).

Of course, it doesn't help when your dang tight ends can't catch a football. How embarrassing is it to have a west coast offense, but two backup tight ends that can't hang on to the football?

Hey Jensen6668, please stop making excuses for SC. A lot of teams have injuries and it doesn't matter if they are starters. Where is all the supposed depth? I thought that SC just reloads when a player goes down. Well, then, reload and stop crying about injuries! Oregon and Washington had injuries when they defeated SC, but I doubt that either would made lame excuses if they had lost.
