NORMAN, Okla. (AP)—Bob Stoops is great friends with Nebraska coach Bo Pelini and even let Pelini’s brother stay at his house for an extended period while they worked together at Kansas State.

He grew up admiring from afar the rivalry the Cornhuskers had with Oklahoma, where he’d eventually be hired as the head coach.

But would he like to see the Huskers re-establish themselves as the marquee team in the Big 12 North?

“I’d rather they didn’t,” Stoops said with a chuckle Tuesday.

The Battle of the Big Reds has been a bit unbalanced lately and Stoops likes it that way. While Nebraska has been rebuilding, Stoops has been able to win four straight games in the series and keep the No. 20 Sooners (5-3, 3-1 Big 12) among the nation’s top teams headed into Saturday night’s game with the Huskers.

Instead of the rivalry determining the conference champion—as it did 31 times in 36 years in the Big Eight—and even a national championship, the game has had less panache in recent years. There was the series’ second “Game of the Century” in 2000 and the teams met for the Big 12 title in 2006, but it’s been nothing like the days of Barry Switzer vs. Tom Osborne in the 1970s and ’80s.

This time, both teams are just trying to make up ground in the divisional standings. It’s the fourth straight time Nebraska (5-3, 2-2) enters the rivalry unranked and, before that, Oklahoma was outside the Top 25 for six of eight meetings in the 1990s.

Pelini said he is “worried about 2009 right now.”

“They’ve played for a long time and any time you’ve played for a long time and the games were meaningful, there’s going to be a different air to the game,” Pelini said. “A lot of people take it seriously, obviously, and we’re looking forward to it.”

Some of today’s players have a feel for the rivalry, although they’re more familiar with the 2000 and 2001 games than with those further back. Sooners cornerback Dominique Franks, whose uncle played for the Sooners, recalled watching recent rivalry games on television.

“It was amazing,” Franks said. “With all the athletes they’ve had and the OU athletes, it’s always been a great rivalry and I don’t expect anything less for this game.”

“It’s a big one, the Battle of the Big Reds,” he added. “You don’t have to say too much after you say Oklahoma vs. Nebraska.”

Stoops tries to make sure his players know the context of the game. As he does with other traditional rivals, he showed clips to the team about the history of the series.

“I always have had, playing Nebraska here for a long time, great respect for them. An amazing tradition and history,” Stoops said. “I always want our freshmen, sophomores, guys that haven’t been around that long to have a true understanding of the whole tradition, history and pride of that program.

“I’ve always felt that way. Playing them has always been tough.”

All the history will be brought up at a reunion Friday night in Lincoln. Switzer, Osborne and some of their best players—including Heisman Trophy winners Steve Owens, Johnny Rodgers, Billy Sims, Mike Rozier, Eric Crouch and Jason White—will eat dinner together and then be introduced at halftime of Saturday night’s game.

Oklahoma held a similar reunion last year for players from the 1971 “Game of the Century.”

“It’s a great rivalry. I’m proud to be a part of it,” said Nebraska defensive tackle Jared Crick, who grew up watching the rivalry in Cozad, Neb. “I can’t really think about it too much going into this week but it’s in the back of my mind `Hey, this is Oklahoma. If we beat them, we get bragging rights.”’

Oklahoma won 62-28 last year in Pelini’s debut in the rivalry. Franks intercepted Joe Ganz’s first pass and returned it for a touchdown, and Oklahoma opened a 28-0 lead in the first 5 1/2 minutes. The Sooners’ final point total was their highest ever in the series.

“I just think it really took everything out of them. Just the first play of the game having a pick-6, that’ll discourage any offense,” Franks said. “It seemed like we jumped on them real early and just took the life out of them.”

Whether he likes it or not, Stoops said he expects Nebraska to rise again. He knows the Pelini family well from their days in Youngstown, Ohio.

“I just know Bo and his attention to detail, his understanding of all parts of the game, that he’ll continue to do a very good job there at Nebraska and continue to build the program,” Stoops said.

the nebraska ksu game will probably be closer than 28 pts. our offense really cant get any worse so we could easily win out. kansas has a 4 game losing streak and what is it about ksu that has everybody cheering them on? so they got their old coach back big deal. with him they have like what 1 conf championship. plus they lost to a crappy UCLA team and LL, a team we beat 55-0. ya so we lost to isu by 2 pts and had 8 turnovers. ksu had 23 pts scored on them and only beat them by 1 pt. oh and texas tech scored twice as many pts on their defense as tech did ours. Texas may beat ksu by 42 pts, but not our top rated defense. i would think even the haters would cheer for the big red to win the north so maybe the big 12 championship would be worth watching.

More like NU 2 KS 3 cause KS has no defense but NU has NO offense. Blackcornshirts get a safety.

NU wont make the championship game with that offense unless all of their remaining opponents give them the game like OU. Texas by 42 over any north team and I can't stand them.

Dingus... Bingo-You hit the nail on the head. That guy was so shook up, he had no chance of driving OU down the field by passing the ball. He was done.

Fireman 42104 I didn't say NU was bad, what I was rebuking was Horse M and his talking smack. NU does not have a good offense as it's one of the worst in the Big 12, however, NU defense is one of the best, but player for player, it's not the best in the Big 12. If it weren't for the turnovers, NU wouldn't have won just the same as Iowa State wouldn't have beat NU if it weren't for the turnovers, but the fact is, it's part of the game. If NU doesn't get some offense going, you can't count on NU defense scoring to keep them in the game, just like the Iowa State game. As far as playing at home, it doesn't seem to matter, considering Iowa State and Texas Tech beat NU in Lincoln.

This game proved how critical quality QB play is to a team. With lights-out defense from both teams, the team whose QB(s) made the fewest mistakes won. Really, the fault probably should go to OU's coaching staff for trying to stay with a pass-first strategy and not recognizing that Jones wasn't on "his game". Nebraska's plan was to apply pressure on Jones and the receivers, creating a level of intimidation and bad execution (penalties & dropped passes). OU never figured it out and even though they were able to move the ball at times, without putting more emphasis on the run, they played right into NU's hands.

I hated the outcome, but this game reminded me of the classic OU/NU battles of the past. Tough, hard-nosed defensive battles. Unfortunately for OU they didn't have Keith Jackson catching passes and Von Shaumann kicking field goals.

Gotta hand it to the NU defense, and their fans. They showed up, and probably fed off each other. It sure seemed to make a difference with OU's QB Jones. Also, Pelini (or whoever made the call) gets a nod for switching QBs in the middle of the game when the first one couldn't produce. And, they also knew that staying with a running attack was their best chance at a win rather than risking throwing INTs. It was almost like their offense couldn't wait until 4th down when they could punt it and play defense, and force OU to make a mistake.

ok we are 6-3. but we are also 5 pts away from being 8-1. you say we havent played any good offenses? V-tech, even with a loss to texas tech we held their offense to half of what they normally put out. we held oklahoma to 3 pts, how many did they put up on texas? i dont care if oklahoma had 1000 yds, they had 3 pts. ur dam right turnovers hurt, look at the isu game. only this time we were on the other side of the turnovers. the north division is open as far as im concerned. ksu only beat isu by what 1 or 2 pts? they come to our house and i guarantee we wont have 8 turnovers. will be a good game win or lose, but im sure sgillesp will be back on here telling us how bad we are.

#121 Horse M what are you smoking? NU has a much better defense than OU? Did you see the stats, a 180 yards of total offense and 60 of those yards came on one play. 1 of 14 in third down efficiency? I know NU's offense is bad but the OU defense has a lot to do with that. I agree NU has a good defense but you need to be realistic, OU is just as good. As I previously said, if it wasn't for OU's offense turning the ball over, NU would now be 5-4.

#43 Horse M...just like Iowa State couldn't win in Lincoln? Oh yeah, Iowa State won...Nebraska was OU's Iowa State. If it wasn't for the turnovers, NU would have four losses. If you think your defense can win every game you're wrong (see the Iowa State game). So quit talking smack, go clean your face and I hope you're eating crow if K State beats NU.

As a OU fan I do have to say one hell of a football game. I knew it would be close but i thought we would come out on top.

Good luck with the rest of the season and If you run the table right you have a shot at texas if you get your offense going.

As for K State you will be heading into Lincoln, if you remember you do not have a good history there. NU will win it but not by much.

Get ready for a wake up call, Nebraska hasn't seen a true runner? Hello, Virginia Tech's running back is far and away better than KState's, and VTech also had a MUCH better offensive line, and Nebraska shut him down.

Nebraska has a better defense than Oklahoma, a team that defeated Kansas State already, and KState's defense has allowed a LOT of points. Snyder a better coach than Pelini? Please, KState has beaten nobody. Better look and see how many ranked teams Nebraska has defeated this year and what KState's record is against ranked teams.

    This whole conference is whacky.

Nebraska beat Oklahoma, who beat K-State, who beat Iowa State, who beat Nebraska.

K-State beat Texas A&M, who beat Texas Tech, who beat K-State.

K-State beat Texas A&M, who beat Texas Tech, who beat Nebraska, who beat Baylor, who beat Missouri, who beat Colorado, who beat Kansas, who beat Iowa State, who beat Nebraska, who beat Oklahoma, who beat K-State.

WOW!! There is still a lot to be decided. It should be a fun 3 weeks!

K-State has a bruiser of a running back in Daniel Thomas. Nebraska has not faced a solid running opponent this year. K-State has all the confidence in the world. Yes, it has not been pretty. And yet they are 3-0 against the North while Nebraska is 1-1. And to prove my point about K-State being more fundamentally sound:

Points scored the last 4 games:
    K-State: 62,20,30,17 = 129
    Nebraska: 10,7,20,10 = 47

    Turnovers last 4 games:
    K-State: 2
    Nebraska: 13!!!!

    But anything can happen.

Horse M - We will have to see. From what I have seen, Bill Snyder is a better coach than Bo Pelini. His teams are more fundamentally sound. Fewer turnovers, steadily improving offense. Nebraska can't even move the ball against Baylor. K-State had 364 yards against Oklahoma in Norman. Your team could only muster 180 yards in Lincoln! K-State is not playing a spoiler this year. They are the real deal in this WEAK North Division. Yes, it could go either way, but I think that Coach Snyder will find a way to bring home a win.

I can't wait for the Big 12 Championship game, so that Nebraska can show Texas what a REAL defense is like.

I'm tired of these troll Texas fans coming out of the woodwork, worthless bunch of little bandwagon jumpers.

Oklahoma scored more than 4 times the number of points on Texas as they did on Nebraska, and did so with far fewer chances to carry the ball due to Texas's ball control on offense. So you better recognize who has the best defense not only in the big 12, but Nebraska has the best defense in all of college football.

I understand that Nebraska might very well lose to Texas, but it will be a score like 10 to 3, or 13 to 6, there is no f'ing way that Texas puts up 35 points on Nebraska. Nebraska won't make the same dumb mistakes on offense that allowed Texas Tech to pin them back.

Haha, I don't mean to laugh, Michael KevinE, but you could be describing Nebraska wide receiver Niles Paul.

How much does it matter, really, if someone shows a moment of brilliance if they continue to follow it up with 2 moments of utter "WTF"?

A few years ago Nebraska had a guy named Bobby Newcombe. Newcombe was fast, he was shifty, man he had great moves.

But... Newcombe fumbled the ball away one out of EVERY 6 TIMES he touched the ball. This is what Niles Paul basically does.

Of course the big difference between Paul and your guy is that Nebraska has no one whatsoever to back Paul up haha.

Why in the world is Adron Tennel even dressing out and hitting the field... This guy couldn't catch a cold if he ran but nakid through a meat lock in the middle or November... I mean Jesus Christ I would only play ten guys on offense if I had to have him on my team... I do not think I have ever seen a player drop more balls than this clown... I mean what does he have pictures of Kevin Wilson ridng an under-aged donkey... Even if he did I'm sure that he has dropped them and lost them by know... If Tenel is the best we have then Katy bar the door we are in for a long run at being very mediocre for a long time.... I would never let this guy on the field again... I would put his picture up all over the stadium with a sign that read DO NOT ADMIT...

If a loss to the real Big Red is what it takes to show ZeroU for what is is (overrated), I'm all for it. Best chance the Sooners have now is a bye week- that's the only way Jones won't throw any INTs.

Be glad Ed Gaylord is dead- otherwise we'd see another Page 1 editorial in the Daily Oklahoman (overpriced fishwrap) calling for Stoop's ouster, like he did against Switzer.

Been a Cornhusker fan since 1962 and good or bad they have always been my favorite team. Bo should never left the team and a wise choice to bring him back. We suffered so long under Calahan I thank the good Lord for common sense and a wise man like Tom O. Bo will restore Nebraska and if not always the best we will again have the respect we deserve. Go Cornhuskers!! P.S. (Thought I should add this little bit. My second favorite team is anyone who beats the Yankees!) Nebraska Cornhusker fan forever.

    guillano:

Nebraska is in the Big 12 North, Oklahoma is in the Big 12 South.

From like 1900 to 1998 they played every year, but the creation of the Big 12 put them in different divisions. The current rules structure is set up like this:

Each division (north/south) plays every other team in their division every year. They also play half of the teams in the other division each year and then the next year as a home/away game. Then the next two years they switch to the other teams from the other division, if that makes sense?

In other words, Nebraska plays Oklahoma two years on, two years off, it is very unfortunate for those of us who remember this storied rivalry.
