Terrelle Pryor’s poor play doomed Ohio State in its lone conference loss, but after enduring a week’s worth of heavy criticism, the sophomore quarterback played a key role in keeping his team in the Big Ten title chase.

He shouldn’t need to provide nearly as much of a boost in his next game.

Pryor’s 17th-ranked Buckeyes get a week off from the conference race Saturday when they host New Mexico State, which features the least productive offense in the nation.

Ohio State (6-2) was the Big Ten’s preseason favorite largely because of Pryor, who was picked as the conference’s preseason offensive player of the year after flashing his dual-threat potential as a freshman.

Instead of continuing to develop, however, Pryor seems to have taken a step back. After six inconsistent games to start the season, Pryor was responsible for four turnovers in the Buckeyes’ shocking 26-18 loss at Purdue on Oct. 17 that left Iowa as the league’s lone remaining unbeaten team.

A tumultuous week followed, with Pryor taking much of the heat for Ohio State’s offensive failures. His high school coach from Jeanette, Pa., was largely critical of how coach Jim Tressel used Pryor, receiver DeVier Posey stated Pryor “can’t do much worse,” and Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James spoke with the quarterback over the phone, advising him on how to deal with the spotlight.

Pryor responded with arguably his best game of the season. He threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 104 yards and another score, and had only one turnover while Ohio State racked up 509 total yards in a 38-7 rout of Minnesota.

“For the amount of heat that Terrelle Pryor took this week, I thought he played really well,” receiver Dane Sanzenbacher said. “I knew in practice he would come through.”

Part of Pryor’s big game was finding a connection with Posey, who enjoyed a career day by catching eight passes for 161 yards and two TDs. Posey has found the end zone in four straight games and is tied for second in the conference with six TD receptions.

The Buckeyes still can claim at least a share of a fifth straight Big Ten title if they win out - they face key league matchups against Penn State and Iowa the next two weeks - but first hope to take care of WAC foe New Mexico State (3-5).

“I hope that they do understand that the progress we make or we don’t make will affect the next time we play when we get back in the conference,” Tressel said. “… I don’t think that this is going to disrupt us.”

Though Pryor is the Buckeyes’ leading rusher, their run game is plagued by injuries. Tailback Brandon Saine left last Saturday’s game with a mild concussion and will be evaluated as the week progresses. Dan Herron, third in rushing behind Pryor and Saine, is questionable with an ankle injury that’s kept him out of the last two games.

If neither Saine nor Herron can go, freshmen Jordan Hall and Jermil Martin - who have a total of 43 carries - would split time. Martin had seven carries for 75 yards and a touchdown against Minnesota.

Regardless of who’s carrying the ball, Ohio State should be in decent shape against the Aggies. New Mexico State is 103rd in the nation in rush defense, allowing 185.6 yards per game—including 254.0 over the last three contests.

The biggest problem for first-year coach DeWayne Walker’s team, though, is on the other side of the ball. New Mexico State is 119th in the nation in scoring (13.3 points per game) and is last in total offense (254.3 yards per game).

The Aggies have been outscored 79-10 in their last two games, the latest a 34-3 home loss to Fresno State last Saturday.

The Buckeyes defense, meanwhile, is seventh in scoring (13.1 ppg) and 13th in total yards (284.8) - a mismatch that’s made them 40-point favorites over the Aggies.

“We’re not taking anybody lightly,” said defensive end Thaddeus Gibson, who recorded three sacks against Minnesota. “They can throw the ball and run the ball just like any other team.”

New Mexico State, which has never faced the Buckeyes, has lost 12 straight to ranked opponents since a 35-7 win at No. 22 Arizona State in 1999.

osu will be lucky to win 1 more game , osu fans are dellusional. no points in the first qtr and only 14 points with 5 minutes left in the first half ?that game should have been 21 -0 after the first qtr and with tressell, you know he will be conserative the rest of the year, maybe after this year when he fails to beat whoever the buckeyes play in a bowl game, they will wake up and realize tresell isnt the man, so what he beats michigan every year, how about beating lsu, florida, texas, or usc for once?

A funny thing about the standings if OSU was undefeated they would be ranked number 1 - 3.... yet now they have two losses and the fans still think they can hang with the big boys in the country. I am a die-hard Hawkeyes fan, born in Iowa City. And throughout this season I have watched a team that gets the job done when things look very very bad. The Hawkeyes have one thing that the Buckeyes DO NOT have... An unending will to finish the game. Pryor has not seen a D like the Hawks have and Stanzi has proved he can overcome any and all adversity. Give the Hawks some credit that they deserve before the Hawkeyes crush your ego and you "nuts".

Just Me, You must be a Mich fan who really has nothing to say and is now jump ship to join the Gators and Timmy ball. You talk about Ohio State playing NMSU for our bye week filler, atleast they are a DIV I school unlike the power house DIV II school Mich picked, Del State, plus you palyed your starters deep into the 4th quarter to make your freshman quarterback look good. You must be best friends with the very Bias Mark May who still thinks Tebow is in the running for the Heisman and will probably get it. One year Mark May talks about Timmy and the great numbers he put up his Heisman year and he did, he earned that one but this year not even close.

2007 yards per rushing TD passing TD
    252.8 23 32

    2008 196.1 12 30

    2009 165.4 8 10

But according to May this year, its given to the BEST player in college football its not about the numbers he says, its about leadership. Thats Bull, its about who gets hyped and who dosen't.
Although Tim will improve those numbers greatly here in the next three weeks when he plays the powerhouse teams of Vandie, 5 passing TD'S, 2 Rushing, FIU, 7 passing TD'S, 3 rushing and FSU, 4 passing, 1 rushing and he and his offense will play the entire game for all three to pad those numbers.

Ohio State's last three games. Penn State is a toss up, they could be the team that played Iowa or the team that played Michigan. Iowa is going to lose against our defense, end of story, we're going to be the game where their luck finally runs out. Michigan just lost to Illinois, Ohio State shut Illinois out, I just hope little Forcier doesn't get too badly beat up against our defense.

I feel bad for the pathetic little jerks who take time out of their day just to find Ohio State articles and say negative things. They're only proving that they think of Ohio State ALL THE TIME, so thank you.

    GO BUCKS!!!!!

All I care about now is winning our last three games, winning our FIFTH straight Big 10 Title, and going to the Rosebowl. WE ARE YOUNG! USC IS DONE!!!! NO BCS BOWL FOR LITTLE PETEY CARROL AND THE CHEATERS. GO BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone seems to be forgetting that Ohio State is YOUNG. Our Defense has THREE shutouts this year (should be five, but thanks to Tressel putting in second team defenses) and we only lose 3 seniors. Pryor is still 19 years old (is 14-4 as a starter) and is almost there. He will be in Vince Young form his last two seasons. Our top three receivers are a freshman, sophomore and Junior. Our RB's are Junior, junior, freshman, freshman. Look out, cuz next year is the Buckeyes year!

OSU showed us some cool tricks yesterday, can't wait to see if Tressel will play that way against a BCS team and not an FBS team. Excited about what I saw from BAUSERMAN.. that kid may be used in the next three games...plus POSEY can throw. Don't waste yesterdays excitement.....build on it!

Its nice to see that a few people have a clue about how college football works and the money aspect but it is also disturbing that mjany that claim to know sports are so ignorant to it,did you not see the NMS players taking pictures like the were tourist this will be probably the greatest memory in their football careers and the back up QB was an Ohio kid from Waverly who would have never got to play at the shoe if not for this chance and to think they made close to a million$ for their program that will help them get better equipment and facilities.Granted this was like a bowl game for them and OSU had nothing to win but when you can take in that kind of money and distribute it out to a smaller schools its a whole lot better than just having a bye week and for that the real football fans that understand are greatful for teams like OSU that will help out since they are the largest money making school in the country with their athletics programs and they do share the wealth

#33 Keaton, I think you've made an excellent point, and this is coming from a Hawkeye fan (though attending Iowa State, lol)

I think that both teams will bring an excellent game to the table, and I don't think it's fair for anyone to judge the other until they play. Ohio State does have the advantage of looking at weak previous seasons, and I must admit those were embarrassing years for us.
I hope that more hawkeye fans pay attention to good points that some people have to make, and I certainly look forward to the game in Columbus in 2 weeks. Best of luck to you guys, hopefully we can sneak ourselves an outright Big 10 championship for the first time under Kirk Ferentz.

Best of luck to Ohio State, and the best of the Big 10 in the rest of their seasons, and of course for the bowl season, bring the B10 bowl record up this year for once, and get ourselves some pride back! =D

The only reason they played New Mexico St is because the schedule was made in advance of the expansion to a 12 game regular season. This was to be their bye week during the season. Therefore, they needed to find another opponent to fill in their schedule. There's not a whole lot of opponents to choose from in the middle of the season, and good ones don't want to step out of conference to play a ranked team out of conference. Compared to most high ranked teams, they play a pretty good non-conference schedule

I applaud teams like Ohio State, USC, Oklahoma, Texas and Miami that are going out and playing huge non-conference games early in the season. It is great for College Football that we get to see these matchups each and every year. This is why I currently have no respect for the SEC major teams (Georgia, Auburn and Arkansas did each play 1 or 2 decent teams the past 5-6 years), as they never leave home, and have publicly stated they won't change their scheduling. Take a risk like the rest of the Nation. How awesome would a Florida at Oregon game be, or Alabama at Michigan (On a good year) be?

osu doesn't schedule games like this just to pad their schedule, they do it so they can have another home game and make money. and nmsu got $800k to play that game. this was originally a bye-week for osu. no one's really arguing that it was a great win. and bulldeuche, your english isn't very good either.
