Penn State’s defense has never been a question mark this season, and its once-shaky offense seems to be turning the corner after a sloppy start.

Minnesota’s offense, on the other hand, remains a work in progress.

That could be bad news for the Golden Gophers on Saturday at Beaver Stadium, where the 14th-ranked Nittany Lions look to turn the Big Ten’s top-ranked defense loose on the conference’s lowest-rated offense.

Penn State (5-1, 1-1) turned the ball over six times during its first three games, and though it outscored its opponents 90-20 in cruising to a 3-0 start, coach Joe Paterno’s team hardly looked like the offensive juggernaut it was during last season’s Rose Bowl run.

Those inconsistencies caught up with the Nittany Lions in their conference opener, as they committed four turnovers and were held to 307 total yards in a 21-10 home loss to then-unranked Iowa.

Penn State has picked it up offensively in its last two games, averaging 533.0 yards - including an impressive 311.5 on the ground - in a pair of easy victories. Evan Royster and Stephfon Green each topped 100 yards rushing in a 35-17 win at Illinois on Oct. 3, then Daryll Clark threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in a 52-3 rout of Football Championship Subdivision foe Eastern Illinois last Saturday.

“We’re not anywhere near as good as where we have to be, but we think we are a better football team than three or four weeks ago,” Paterno said. “We played with a little more poise.”

The Nittany Lions’ defense has been tough all season, allowing 255.7 yards per game to rank eighth in the nation in total defense and sixth in scoring defense (10.2 points per game). But considering the highest-ranked offense Penn State has beaten was Illinois - 84th at 341.6 yards per game - it’s difficult to gauge how good defensive coordinator Tom Bradley’s unit is.

Minnesota’s offense fits right in with the rest of the struggling groups the Nittany Lions have faced, with the Golden Gophers (4-2, 2-1) ranking 99th in total offense (319.7 yards per game).

Minnesota does, however, boast the best receiving threat in the conference in All-Big Ten senior wideout Eric Decker. Decker caught 84 passes for 1,074 yards as a junior, and he’s well on pace to top that with 46 receptions and 689 yards - good for third in the country - through six games.

“I think we’ll know a lot more (about our secondary) after this week,” Paterno said.

Decker had four catches for 66 yards and a touchdown against Penn State as a freshman in 2006 in a 28-27 overtime loss at the Metrodome in the last meeting between the teams.

“He has great hands so we have to be physical with him,” Nittany Lions cornerback A.J. Wallace said of Decker, a 27th round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins in June. “We know they’re going to go at him early and try to get him involved, to get him in his rhythm.”

Decker will be trying to atone for his least productive game of the season, when he hauled in three catches for 50 yards - part of a mere 74-yard passing day for quarterback Adam Weber - against Purdue last Saturday. The Gophers, though, ran for 207 yards and four touchdowns and returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown in sealing their first conference victory at new TCF Bank Stadium, 35-20.

Minnesota had averaged 96.0 yards on the ground coming in.

“It’s just been a matter of time,” Weber said. “More reps, and an attitude and a big drive or play gains confidence, especially for those front five guys. They kind of build off each other, and when the running backs are running as hard as they are it’s kind of a back and forth thing.”

Penn State is eighth in the nation in rushing defense - allowing 81.8 yards per game - largely thanks to a line anchored by tackle Jared Odrick.

The Nittany Lions might be even tougher to run on if they get linebacker Sean Lee back Saturday. Lee, who was on the All-Big Ten second team as a junior in 2007, missed last season with a torn right ACL and has been out since spraining his left knee Sept. 19 against Temple.

Lee said Tuesday he feels as if he’s ready to go, though Paterno cautioned the team doctor would have the final say.

Penn State has won six of 10 meetings against Minnesota, including three of five in Happy Valley, since joining the conference in 1993. The Nittany Lions have never lost consecutive home games to unranked Big Ten opponents.

0 points in a college football game, Dan G. How do YOU live with that? Get educated. Air Force RUNS the football in an option offense (flexbone)...much too complicated for you to understand. Top 10 rushing team in the nation for the last 20+ years. If you need help, watch tapes of Colorado, Nebraska, Air Force back in their better years. Not much passing there either. They were top ranked teams...where was Minnesota? Shoveling snow during bowl games.

    Patricia, Gimp

I just looked at the boxscore, TWO total passing yards in the game against Wyoming?

LMFAO this argument is officially over.

Patrica - please refer to AF-Wyoming blog. I'll give you TCU but Utah and BYU? Come on. Maybe a challenge in the Mountain West but that's it.

Have you learned to love 20-13 yet?

    Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Dan G, for someone who thinks he knows college football sure sounds uneducated in his posts. The AFA has played a ranked team. TCU. Maybe if you would read the papers and columns you would find them in discussions for a potential BCS bowl. They played TCU a lot closer than the Ground Hogs played Penn State. In fact, did the Hogs even show? 0 points in a college football game? That sucks.

I don't know...I think I would be happier shutting out an unranked team than being shut out by a ranked team. A win is a win, and a loss is a loss. Besides...what does being a ranked team really mean, anyway? Iowa was unranked and had no problem beating a then #5 Penn State.

Patricia - 20-13. Have a nice day. Play a ranked team, then flap.

Michael - nobody cares about your ignorance. You have insecurity issues and it's obvious.

#31 - TD was on 3rd down, but you're right, probably not a game changer. Interference calls were pretty terrible, lot of feet tangiling and it wasn't the only time it was called.

You're an idiot. 13 points??? LMFAO. Wrong. Explain how the officials helped Harvin blow by 8 guys en route to a kickoff TD. Please enlighten me how Sidney Rice was assisted on a TD pass from Favre, or Greg Lewis's catch with 2 seconds left was the result of a bad call? That's 21 points you clown. 6-0. Eat it up.

Haha Dan G, complaining about the officials in a blowout ( this game), but can't admit they were the main reason the Vikes beat the Niners and are 5-0, in a game that came down to the last second, the officials gave the Viqueens 13 pts that game, and they only won by 3...and that TD was a good call, he had possession, and maintained possession while dragging his feet...and a Golden Gonad fan wants to cry about that and somehow with their poor and biased vision can't agree, then call it a make up call on the phantom holding call on the play before that took the TD away from Royster, beeoootttchhhh

That interference call was correct. If you look closely at the replay, contact cause the receiver to stumble. They have to call that.

The TD overturned replay surprised me a little because I'm not sure the receiver had the ball. But its not like that was 4th down, probably not a game changer.

Any 1-AA school would have more pride than MN. Maybe the fan base in Minny should try to imitate Iowa's fans, rather than chanting about how much they hate them while playing Air Force.

And speaking of Iowa, wasn't 2002 fun? Have they found those goal posts yet?

If I have to explain to you why MN fans won't renew, you're not paying attention. When you see the crowd for MSU, you'll understand.

Oh and that TD doesn't even matter, how about the BS taunting call (that 99% of players do after every play they make) that gave them 3 pts, or the weak defensive holding call that gave them their 1st TD and AP's only good run, or the missed block in the back (that was RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE REF) on a punt return that lead to another 3 pts?....But anyways, I did read you and your buddies comments, did you really think the Gophers had a chance? I think my favorite play was the 4th and goal where the Minnesota guy was running, and probably thinking to himself "Wow, finally we might actually score some points", then BOOM, he was denied! lol

Yeah i saw that fumble, Penn State recovered it anyways, he actually saved Minnesota 5 extra yards because they spotted it where the guy went down, not where the other penn stater recovered...nice try though...the gophers do suck, 20-0 has nothing to do with the officials, 464-138 total yards has nothing to do with the officials....and what was the spread? lol, i love the first couple of comments on here, just noticed them

Shut up MDK, there was no where NEAR enough evidence to overturn the TD. Also it was convenient that the officials missed a key fumble at the 2nd half kickoff. Like I said, Gophers were horrible but in addition to playing PSU's stout defense they had to play the officials as well.

PSU's offense didn't look that good. We lost the Iowa game fair and square and need another win against a good team before I even think Penn State is big bowl worthy.

Don't even give me the officiating crap, would have been a blow out anyways (it was nice to see the refs actually decided to make the CORRECT call on a replay, unlike the BS during the Iowa game)....but being a Minnesota fan you should be used to crappy officiating going your way (see the Vikings Vs. 49ers game, proof enough)

Wow nice home call on that TD. What a joke. At least the Gophers offense sucks. Weber is a bum.

Penn State will not win the big ten. Looks like Iowa will.

Jeff D, Dan G, you're on crack for sure. And Purdue just beat the schmuckeyes. So much for PSU's Big Ten Champ hopes being dead! Looks like PSU will do very well if they can beat Michigan at home and OSU at Beaver Stadium. After Purdue beating the schmuckeyes, I'm licking my chops. Nov. 7th could be a very satisfying meal for the Lions! For the Glory, baby! You Gophers are gonna get a @#$% slapping. Watch and see!

    Micheal:

    1. You have to win at least 6 games to go to a bowl. Do you know anything about college football?
    2. The Gophers no longer play in the Dome. If you haven't heard they play at a new stadium. ON CAMPUS
    3. Iowa...Hisss
    4. Yes why wouldn't fans do that?

I recommend learning about college football before trashing another team. Just because your I-AA school sucks doesn't mean you need to post ur insecurities on the web.

    MICHAEL.
It's nice to see a POS like you from St.Paul talking trash about his home team. You are fair weather so why don't you go find a home elsewhere. You are not wanted here. Every body knows the Gophers program is being turned around as we speak. This will not happen over night so get your cheap shots in while you can. Any retard could talk trash about a team that has struggled for years. Wow. You are real tough. I would like to see you talk your little trash to actual fans at the games. You would be crying like a little bitc.h.
BTW: The Gophers are still 4-2 as of right now. We have great fans considering the mediocrity we have put on the field.

    GO GOPHERS!!!!!!!
