Stifling run defenses have been a staple at Ohio State over the past few years, but recently the current one has been especially impressive.

The ninth-ranked Buckeyes hope to continue their success in stopping the run on Saturday when they play host to John Clay and Wisconsin while looking to hand their Big Ten rival their first loss.

After losing by three points to then-No. 3 Southern California last month, Ohio State (4-1, 2-0) reeled off consecutive shutouts over Toledo and Illinois before beating Indiana 33-14 last Saturday.

The Buckeyes held the Hoosiers scoreless until giving up a touchdown early in the second quarter. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor threw three touchdowns and rushed for another, but he also tossed his fifth interception - surpassing last year’s total.

Ohio State gave up 18 yards rushing to Indiana and has held opponents to 37.7 yards on the ground in the last three games - the third-best average in the Football Bowl Subdivision over that span.

“We’ve tried to take pride in getting 11 guys to the ball all the time,” lineman Todd Denlinger said. “That way if one guy misses a tackle you have nine, 10 guys behind you to clean it up. … We’re trying to get better at it.”

The Buckeyes’ run defense hasn’t allowed a 100-yard individual rushing performance since Southern California’s Joe McKnight on Sept. 13, 2008, and have allowed only seven 100-yard rushers since the beginning of the 2005 season.

After putting up big defensive displays in its last three games, Ohio State is expecting a bigger challenge against Wisconsin (5-0, 2-0), which ranks 14th in the FBS with an average of 217.2 rushing yards. Much of the Buckeyes’ attention will be focused on Clay, who ran for 184 yards and three touchdowns in Wisconsin’s 31-28 win at Minnesota last Saturday.

Clay, named the Big Ten offensive player of the week Monday, leads the league with 116.4 yards per game and seven rushing touchdowns.

“Wisconsin can run it and they’ve demonstrated that. We’ve demonstrated that we can play he run, so now what a great challenge,” coach Jim Tressel said.

Adding to that challenge is that Ohio State will be without defensive tackle Dexter Larimore, who left against Indiana with a sprained right knee and will miss this game. Larimore has 17 tackles this season.

Quarterback Scott Tolzien passed for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in Wisconsin’s first four wins, but the Badgers are hoping to continue to get more out of the 247-pound Clay, who had been held to fewer than 75 yards rushing in two of the first four contests.

“My size helps a lot,” said Clay, a native of Racine, Wis. “I can absorb most of the pounding and deliver at the same time. Being this big and being able to run that hard really helps me out.”

The Badgers are seeking their first 6-0 start since 2004 when they won their first nine.

Four of Wisconsin’s wins this year have been by eight points or fewer, which may be why it’s unable to break into the top 25. Coach Bret Bielema said national recognition is of little interest to the players.

“I think our team is a team that likes to gain respect rather than lose respect,” he said. “And because of that, they really don’t care what comes their way.”

Ohio State leads the all-time series against Wisconsin 52-17-5. Pryor rushed for an 11-yard touchdown with 1:08 left in Ohio State’s 20-17 win over Wisconsin last season - the Buckeyes’ second straight win over the Badgers.

Clay led Wisconsin with 69 yards on 10 carries.

Yes, that is why they are the 'lil 11 and the MAC serves as their readily available "beat-up" conference. Why do you think Marshall and UCF left; they had higher aspirations them being punching bags like the rest of the MAC.

So Indiana, Northwestern, Purdue, Minnesota and Illinois do not provide enough "tune-up" in conference? You have to schedule patsies like Toledo and New Mexico State in addition?

    Patrick,
The entire Big 10 does it, not just OSU. Generally, these games are played before the conf. games start, but obviously some are played after. Look at the Big 10 schedules and you will see. So don't single out OSU when the whole conf. does the same thing.

The better schools need a few "tuneups" during the season.

Terry, er... 1962, So if the WAC sucks then you are confirming that OSU schedules inferior out of conference opponents? I know, trying to stay within the 'lil 11 paradigm.

So you still have copies of the video and postage to spare? i thought you would be out of both after sending them to all the OSU boosters, demanding payment

    Udahman,
On November 3, 2007 Wisconsin came to the Horseshoe. They lost that game 38-17 (Benie ran all over them). That was the last time Wisconsin came to the shoe. How can the last TWO trips be wins for Wisconsin when the last time they visited they lost?

    Patrick @ # 261,
News flash for you: The WAC sucks and so does Boise State. Their # 5 ranking is bullsh!t. Playing a schedule of doormats from that Division 2 conference.
OSU 2002 National Champions!! 14-0 Perfect Season. Double digit point underdog. Beat Miami in 2OT.

Give me your name & address and I'll send you a copy of that game for you to enjoy again.

    Jinz,

"Sat, Dec 5 New Mexico State

    yep thats a hard schedule"

New Mexico State is on that "Tough" Out of Conference OSU Schedule, (at C'bus, of course, Oct 31st)

So if Boise beats NMSU by more points than OSU, how is OSU better?

    To matt K:

Learn to read a box score. one intereception was deep in OSU territory, the other was a 32 yd return. So lets think this through...that would mean that WI had it on what? Their own 32! There we go, way to think that one out.

As for all you other morons, time of possession and offensive yardage was dominated by WI for sure. BUT why was that? Because OSU defense and special teams kept OSU's offense off the field for what would have led to 3 offensive drives for the home team. That is the sole reason for the lop-sided box score. Just looking for more reasons to bash a team who is in the top 10 year after year. So they are in a droughy of winning big games, at least they arent loosing to unranked teams, horrible conference opponents and at least they are making to to bowl games after the new year rings in unlike other teams.

Just think things through before you start bashing a quality team. Does OSU deserve to be in the top 5...not yet, but only time will tell.

"The Canes didn't deserve to win."

Glad to see Ref Terry Porter is keeping active in retirement and still repeats his reasoning as to the flag. csurf 1962, nice moniker Terry

RW, more like Wal-Mart or K Mart

Dana, OSU people will always point to some Ag program to show they are the best. Trouble is, even though it is the largest school in the country, it can't crack the Top 50, nor even the top 20% of universities in the country. Their admit rate is about 60% or maybe even higher this year.

Some guy on another board mentioned how great the poultry program was at OSU. OK, I will admit it, OSU is great in Chicken_ _ _ _

#126- You really think OSU is an Ivy League caliber school??? Yeah, right. You reload with felons, criminals and thugs. Your alumni even funds it while the sweatervest looks the other way. BTW Boise State is undefeated and ranked higher than you are. Take that to the bank.

@230: The OSU defense allowed a mediocre offense to gain over 350 yards. Only a fool would call that a dominating performance. The OSU defense had a good day overall, but there was nothing dominating about it.

Why do SO many front runners cheer for OSU that aren't from Columbus and didn't go to OSU???? These people go to Target, buy an OSU shirt, then watch every game until they lose......When is the last time OSU had a real schedule or beat a top ten ranked team?? Unless you went to OSU, or are from Columbus you're a fake!

anyone who is anyone would look at those stats the only return that was remarkable was the kick return. Both interceptions were deeeeeeeep in osu territory meaning WI marched the ball all the way down. And yeah TOP matters when it is that big of desparity.

"If it ain't broke don't fix it".. Well the Offense IS broke and needs a major overhaul. The offense is embarrasing. ESPN and the internet sport sites all keep mentioning how bad OSU's offense is and how they need to fix it quick before we get to the stronger teams.
You are delusional if you think Pryor is the answer at QB.

    Dan G,
Congrats. I think it's great. I hope you stay unbeaten because that means you will be due to lose one. Maybe Nov.1 in GB???? Healthy offensive line for the Pack by then.

Have to go watch Twins rewind.

Time of possession. Why did Wisconsin have so much more...because the Ohio State offense is so bad they can not stay on the field. Move Pryor to another position and get a real QB. Our Defense can't win them for us every week. The Offense needs to be able to eat the clock and score on its own.
As of now it is incapable of doing it. Ohio State will do ok in the Big Ten, but they will get destroyed in a bowl game against a real team. The defense will be worn out from being on the field so long.
BENCH PRYOR!!!! We need a real QB.

    Patrick @ # 241,
Miami was a double digit favorite in that game.
OSU faced a 4th & 14 on that drive and made the 1st down. A stop by Miami & the
    game was over.
Miami had a possesion AFTER the Bucs took the lead in the 2nd OT & couldn't score.
Stop crying about a bad call. The Canes didn't deserve to win.The Bucs were the
    better team that night.

    Have some. It's tastes great.

wow this is pitaful how you guys see low numbers for stats and all a sudden our offence sucks if you look at the time we had the ball its only for about 18 minutes last time i checked theres 15 minutes in a quarter hello we had the ball for about what a 1 1/5 quarters and we got 190 yds and 8 first downs lets say we have the ball for the usual time which is usually about double that if we matched that supposably horrable performance we would have what 380yds and 16 first downs looks like a good game to me and another thing that bothers me we are 5-1 #7 in the ncaa what are you cryin about and did i mention we lost the only flippin game to USC by 3 points and for those of you sayin that pryor needs to be a passing QB get the hell over it thats like tellin a weight lifter that specializez in deadweight to only benchpress,or like telling a goaly in a soccer game dont block it with your hands only use you legs id be fine with him averaging 180yds passing when he can get 60-100yds rushing to go along with it get over your selves it it aint broke dont fix it and i think 3 points from being undefeted and still in the hunt for a championship is not close to being broke at all...
