With its first Big Ten road test a stunning success, Iowa now tries to continue its strong play at Kinnick Stadium, where it will be looking to avoid a letdown against a non-conference opponent.

Leaping back in the Top 25 after another upset of Penn State, the 13th-ranked Hawkeyes look to open 5-0 for the first time since 1995 when they take on Arkansas State on Saturday.

Iowa improved to 4-0 for the first time in three years in resounding fashion last week, knocking off then-No. 5 Penn State 21-10 on the road. It was the Hawkeyes’ second straight victory over a highly ranked Nittany Lions team, as Iowa dealt then-No. 3 Penn State its first loss last season, 24-23 on Nov. 8.

Last week’s victory kept the Hawkeyes tied with Texas for the nation’s second-longest winning streak at eight. Top-ranked Florida has won 14 in a row.

“We’re a long way from the finish line, but at least it’s good to get off on a positive start,” coach Kirk Ferentz said. “It’s always good to win on the road … and we’ve got two under our belts right now, so that’s a good thing to see.”

Now Ferentz’s team returns to Iowa City, where it has won 48 of 58 and 22 of 25 against non-conference opponents.

Iowa should have a good chance to extend that streak if its defense and special teams can duplicate their performances of last week.

The Hawkeyes frustrated Penn State’s Daryll Clark into a 12-for-32 performance and intercepted him three times. Iowa forced four turnovers, scored on a safety and went ahead in the fourth quarter on Adrian Clayborn’s blocked punt and 53-yard return for a touchdown.

On Penn State’s ensuing possession, linebacker Pat Angerer brought an interception back 38 yards to set up a 13-yard touchdown run from redshirt freshman Adam Robinson.

“I got scared a little running around trying to find a place to go,” said Angerer, who had 14 tackles and was named Big Ten defensive player of the week. “We were out there flying around, trying to do our job.”

Iowa is tied for fifth in the Football Bowl Subdivision with 12 turnovers forced.

The Hawkeyes’ speedy, aggressive defense held Penn State to 307 yards - more than 90 below the Nittany Lions’ season average. Iowa is eighth in the nation in scoring defense at 11.5 points a game and third in the Big Ten with 304.2 yards allowed per contest.

Iowa has relied on its defense while the offense works to find consistency. Junior Ricky Stanzi has completing 56.3 percent of his passes for 779 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions.

The ground attack has been more productive, with Robinson rushing for 321 yards and four TDs, and freshman Brandon Wegher adding 220 yards and two touchdowns.

The Hawkeyes are averaging 347.8 yards, ninth in the Big Ten.

Arkansas State (1-2) will be going against an Iowa team that has not allowed a rushing touchdown since the third quarter of last year’s win over Penn State. The Red Wolves are averaging 190.3 yards on the ground.

Senior Reggie Arnold rushed for two touchdowns last week, but had only 32 yards on 12 carries as Arkansas State lost 30-27 to Troy.

The Red Wolves led the Trojans 23-10 in the third quarter before losing their Sun Belt Conference opener.

“Obviously I’m disappointed we didn’t win the game,” coach Steve Roberts told the team’s official Web site. “I have to give Troy a lot of credit for a great plan and execution. … Saying that, we had some opportunities we didn’t capitalize on.”

Arkansas State, which has never faced Iowa, was outscored 121-22 in its last four road games against Top 25 teams. The Red Wolves are 0-4 against Big Ten opponents.

If I remember right, back in 1985, #1 Iowa hosted #2 Michigan. The only stories that I remember about the game leading up to it is Iowa's offense was ranked #1 and Michigan's Defense was ranked #1. I remember there was a story about Bo Schembeckler having his assistants go in before the game and cover the walls of the locker room with white paper to cover up the pink and the last thing that I really remember from the game was Rob Houghtlin kicking the game winning field goal as time ran out with Iowa winning something like 10-12, or 9-10. Does anyboby else remember this game?

I'm not even an Iowa fan, or a follower of this conference, but from what I've seen of Iowa the fans should be angry. Why they are not in the top 10 right now is beyond me. Teams that have one loss and/or in weak conferences are in the top 7, what gives???? I hope Iowa continues to win to earn thier spot higher in the rankings.

Sounds to me like the Hawks have a bunch of SEC fans shaking in thier boots. Talk all you want bout the Big Ten being weak, being balanced isnt weak. Florida is all you have an Iowa beat them in 2006 - ya i said it, Urban Cryer paid off the refs! Go to Youtube n check out : 2006 Outback Bowl Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Florida Gators n let me know who you think won that game. Now for the teams in the SEC with less money, LSU and Soth Carolina pretty sure Iowa beat them to. So haters if the Big Ten n Iowa are so weak why do we keep beatn you? I really hope that Iowa n Florida r both undefeated at the end of the season so Iowa can shut up these SEC fans finally and Clayborn n company can end Tebows football career.

put the pipe down, the only team TCU plays this year is BYU and they suck! but they will beat TCU. Niether TCU or BYU should b ranked in the top 25. TCU plays a bunch of high school teams this year n they will still have 4 or 5 losses

Yet jody, Iowa is 3-1 against the SEC the last 6 years (and the loss will always be disputed due to horrid SEC officiating on 2 horrid calls, one that led to 7 points for the Gators, a bad late hit call, and another that didn't let Iowa have a shot at tying the game, the offsides call on the recovered onside kick, so bad that the announcers said the officiating was bad. That said, it doesn't mean Iowa would have won but were denied the proper opportunity).

Nobody cares if you think that the SEC is better. Iowa is still 5-0 which is better than Ole Miss, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina. Its the same record as Alabama and LSU. As far as I'm concerned, the SEC is a better conference but just because its a better conference does not mean that Iowa cannot beat anyone in the conference (probably not against Bama or a Tebow-led Florida). But outside the 2 elite teams in the SEC, the conference is nothing better or worse than any other major Conference.

I know that Iowa struggled against Ark St. but Ferentz should be acknowledged as one of the greatest coaches in football because of what kind of players he developed. Does anyone realize he usually gets 2 and 3 star players?

good post 44, haven't heard to much more from David WC. Guess he's home crying after Houston got it handed to them today by a non ranked team. LOL. Guess you have to be careful what you say here, lol. I'm a big SEC fan, but lived most of my younger years 12 miles from Iowa City. Always loved the Hawks, even in there bad years. I still think Florida is #1 though as long as Tebow is playing. LSU barely won today, but they did win. I think Florida will beat them and so will Alabama. I hope Iowa can run the table (some how) and get a good bowl game. As much as I love the Hawkeyes, I'm pretty sure they can't beat Florida or Boise St. or Alabama. They have a long road to hoe, but I hope they can give it a good run.

Post 3 Im sure Arkansas St. is every bit as good as Houston get a life the big ten sucks Houston would beat Iowa by 3 touchdowns . I see undefeated Mich. lost to Mich. St. who lost to Central Mich.some kind of tough conference, maybe Mich. St. should drop Cent. Mich. and pick up Appalachian St. sorry I forgot they beat Mich.last year. App. ST. would probably finish 2nd in the Nothing ten PLUS 1!

This was posted today before Houston was beat by UTEP. This just goes on to make my point. Would you rather win a close game to an unranked team or loose the game.

Looks like OK bit the dirt today and Houston is getting mauled by UTEP. Iowa should move up two more spots to 11. Hope there ready for Michigan and had them another lose. I just wish Stanzi could play better, that's Iowa's only weakness it seems. They just have to rely on the D to much. Keep it going Hawks!

Is plutaris really an@#$% in disguise? I think he suffers from little man syndrome. It is so much easier to spout his garbage tucked away in his mother's basement, but given the opportunity in person, he would wilt and stammer.

plutaris, I just read your comment about the polls. I hate doing this since it seems like we dissagree on everything else, but I think you are right. The polls are a joke early and should not be out until week 5 or 6. Now that said, it wont matter if the AP and USA Today agree, there will always be someone that puts out a poll early so it is just one of the things to live with. Again, I agree with you about the polls.

Since we are counting conferences that do not play Big time football, does that include Conference USA, WAC and Mountain West since they do not get an automatic bid to a BCS bowl game?

Burley, I think you mean Nick Saben when he was with LSU, Iowa beat them when Drew Tate hooked up with Holliway. Urban Meyers went from Utah to Florida and the last time that Iowa and Florida played Florida beat them. Now with that said, Iowa is still 3-1 in bowl gamesagainst the SEC the past 6 years.

We all know the Sunbelt conference is Bigtime football....right?

For the unlightened (keep this to yourselves) Arkansas State ( not to be confused with the Razorbacks) plays in something called the Sunbeam Conference, er I mean Sunbelt Conference. Perhaps with
the state of the economy and the fact there are 11 teams in the Big Ten, it should be renamed something more appropriate.... I got it....how about ..in correlation with Iowa's opponent, we can
call the BigTen the.......drum roll please......The RustBelt Conference. I'm sure President Obama would love it. :-0
    lol
