Penn State had established itself as a national title contender when it carried an unbeaten record into its meeting with Iowa late last season, but it’s been more difficult to get a read on coach Joe Paterno’s unblemished yet untested team in 2009.

The Nittany Lions’ motivation, however, will be hard to miss.

A loss to the Hawkeyes spoiled Penn State’s otherwise perfect regular season in 2008, and the fifth-ranked Nittany Lions will have revenge on their minds Saturday night in front of a frenzied Beaver Stadium crowd.

Penn State (3-0) was among the Big Ten’s preseason favorites after claiming its second conference championship in four years last fall, but Paterno’s team saw its national championship dreams end on a windy afternoon in Iowa City.

The Nittany Lions came in 9-0 and ranked third in the nation on Nov. 8, but couldn’t hold on to a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter at Kinnick Stadium. All-conference quarterback Daryll Clark threw for 86 yards and a late interception in his worst game of the season, and Iowa emerged with a 24-23 win after Daniel Murray kicked a 31-yard field goal with a second left.

Iowa (3-0) hasn’t lost since, winning seven straight by nearly 18.0 points per game. Awaiting the Hawkeyes’ return trip to State College, though, will be a stadium-wide “Whiteout” among the 110,000 fans at Beaver Stadium.

“I don’t know what revenge has got to do with it in football,” Paterno said. “It’s not like they sneaked up on us and stuck us in the back with a knife or something. They played a good football game and they beat us.”

Iowa defensive tackle Karl Klug, however, figures Penn State may be interested in some payback, particularly considering the Nittany Lions have lost six of their last seven to the Hawkeyes.

“Oh yeah, they are going to (want) some revenge on us,” Klug said. “We are going to have to bring our ‘A’ game.”

Clark bounced back by throwing for an average of 284.7 yards in the Nittany Lions’ final three games - including a 38-24 Rose Bowl loss to Southern California - and tossing eight touchdown passes and three interceptions.

He’s matched those totals exactly in Penn State’s three non-conference wins to open 2009 while throwing for 253.3 yards.

After Clark carried the offense in wins over Akron and Syracuse, the Nittany Lions got their running game going Saturday against Temple. Clark threw for 167 yards and a score, but Evan Royster’s 134 yards led an improved rushing effort in Penn State’s 31-6 win.

“I just think we were a little tougher across the line of scrimmage,” Paterno said. “… We played with a little more bounce.”

The Nittany Lions have outscored their three opponents 90-20, though Akron, Syracuse and Temple are a combined 2-6. Perhaps of more concern than their easy schedule or an inexperienced offensive line, however, is the health of their two star linebackers.

Sean Lee missed the entire 2008 season with a right knee injury, but was named the Big Ten’s defensive player of the week after recording 12 tackles and a sack against the Owls. But Lee left in the second half with a sprained left knee and is doubtful for this game.

Navorro Bowman, who tied a team high with eight tackles and recovered a fumble in the loss to the Hawkeyes a year ago, hasn’t played since the opener due to a groin injury. Bowman returned to practice Tuesday and will play this week.

Sophomore Nathan Stupar, who had been filling in admirably for Bowman, may not be available after spraining an ankle this week.

Iowa, on the other hand, is banged up on offense. Left tackle Bryan Bulaga missed the past two games with an undisclosed ailment, while tight end Tony Moeaki (sprained ankle) and receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos (hamstring) have also been left off coach Kirk Ferentz’s depth chart.

Johnson-Koulianos’ absence could be critical, as he had seven catches for 89 yards and a touchdown in Iowa’s upset of Penn State last season. Quarterback Ricky Stanzi, however, has found some other weapons.

Both senior Trey Stross and sophomore Marvin McNutt are averaging more than 15 yards per catch, but perhaps the most significant development for Iowa has been finding a running game. With Shonn Greene gone to the NFL and sophomore Jewel Hampton out for the season with a knee injury, the Hawkeyes struggled to run the ball in an ugly 17-16 season-opening win over Northern Iowa.

Freshman Brandon Wegher gained 101 yards in a 35-3 victory at Iowa State on Sept. 12, though, and redshirt freshman Adam Robinson equaled that last Saturday - also scoring twice - in a 27-17 win over Arizona.

“We have two guys that really haven’t played very much, and I think probably what we saw with Adam today, he’s benefiting from the experience a little bit,” Ferentz said. “He’s gaining ground (on Brandon) right now.”

Penn State’s 27-7 home win over Iowa on Oct. 6, 2007, snapped a four-game losing streak against the Hawkeyes at Beaver Stadium.

The Nittany Lions have won 24 straight home games against unranked opponents by an average of 26.4 points.

I don't understand the people who say, Iowa got lucky. Yes, PSU made alot of mistakes, but people, without a rockin Iowa defense to be there, PSU probably would not have made these so called "mistakes". Such as "Clark made a bad decision", BECAUSE Iowa's defensive front four caused the pressure that made him throw the bad pass to avoid being SACKED. Get real people, Iowa is good, Penn State is good, But Iowa just plain outplayed PSU. Iowa's offense sucked, defense owned. PSU's whole team played average. Nobody gives Iowa credit for going to Happy Valley, Playing in front of probably one, if not THE hardest crowd's in the nation. Both teams had to play in the crap weather people, not just Penn State. Hands down, Iowa was the winner, thats all the matters. GO HAWKS!!!! Good luck Penn State!

I agree i was thinking 9-3 and the outback bowl. next year depending how much playing time newsome gets could be the year. I really don't want to give up totally on this year but the 2010 class reminds me of the 2005.
Does anyone else think that clark may be pumping too much metal? He looks like he could play line if he had to but could it be adversely be effecting his accuracy. Well lets get a win sat and get back on track!! Go pSU

I'm a PSU fan, but let's get real. The Lions were ranked way higher than they should've been when the season started. For those of you who "seriously" thought that they were legitimate BCS contenders, you were fooling yourselves! Four new starters on the O-line, 3 new receivers, and a new secondary, how could anyone reasonably expect a 12-0 season? Three cupcake non-conference games produced nothing. The weaknesses were exposed and the Lions were clearly out-played by the Hawkeyes. I'm seeing a 10-2 season at best and can only hope that Kevin Newsome gets his reps this year so he can compliment a much better team next year.

It's very easy to complain about penalties, freak plays, home town referees, etc. When it is said and done, that was a very good college football game. Obviously I am happy that the Hawks took the vicotry. Penn State has a great program and I could only imagine how awesome that stadium was on Saturday night. TV coverage of the crowd blew me away and that town knows how to host a game.

Iowa is better than people think. We have a major issue with Stanzi but he did what he had to do. He made just few enough mistakes to not blow the game, but the defense saved our rear ends.

Let's put Arkansas State to bed early so that when the Sioux City armada shows up for the 10-10 game, at night, against Michigan, Kinnick will be rocking.

How awesome would it be to have Iowa at 5-0, Michigan at 5-0, a 7:00 Kickoff, in Iowa City???

Game Day better be there for that party baby!!!!!

    GO HAWKS!!!

    MC

Right at them---the one time we did go wide royster picked up about 25 and then fumbled.Another thing we keep more talent on the bench than upset the starters.

Im not making excuses..clark sucked but what about all the holding on iowa offensive line and only one call it was very obvious penn state got 2 huge plays called back on holding calls that were very hard to see.and i never seen a roughing the kicker call that fake he was blocked into the punter and on replay it shows not one part of the body even touched the punter just give them the game.iowa did play very good cant take that away but its typical of penn state not to get the call...wisnewskie needs to go back to playing gaurd instead of center..

Whine_Whine (post 211): Penn State is not "Penn" - although perhaps PSU may fare better playing football in the Ivy League. "Penn" is the University of Pennsylvania - one of this nation's finest academic institutions. I would have thought a self proclaimed fan of the Big 10 would know the difference.

Yes I do know the difference, but since it was almost 3 in the morning and I was just getting home from a 12 hour shift in the E.R. you will forgive my Faux Pas. But I would further wonder if you are going to argue semantics over substance why you are even on these boards if you have nothing to offer. Must be a Pac 10 fan

I find it interesting that many of you are surprised that Iowa can improve. Yes, their game against UNI didn't end up the way we planned, but how many special teams can say they blocked 2 field goals within 10 seconds? I don't know if anybody has noticed, but Iowa's 4 opponents are all 3-1. Guess who that 1 was to? How many teams can say that? Did you know Iowa got bumped from the rankings in their first WIN? Most ranked teams would make it headline news. Ferentz just lets the team's playing do the talking. When was the last time Iowa's recruiting class was better than Penn State's? I don't know either. Shouldn't Penn State have destroyed Iowa with that talent? Adam Robinson, who has 80 yards per game, and Brandon Wegher, who has 73 yards per game, are freshman. Kirk Ferentz saw Tyler Sash play high school basketball and thought he would be good a good football player. Who is Tyler Sash? He's the one who had a huge interception against Penn State last season and is currently 2nd in the nation in interceptions. Oh, those SEC fans who thinks Big Ten teams cannot beat you guys, Iowa crushed South Carolina last year in a bowl they shouldn't have even been at. Northwestern beat Iowa and finished with the exact same records. Guess who got the better bowl? Iowa.

Hey # 26 that is very true lets keep this win in perspective it was against a good PSU team but one game at a time Arkansas St. next week a good team to play after a win like this because if their is a let down I think the talent will be to much for the opponent and the hawks will win walking away then we can get our head back on straight and get ready for Michigan, but remember hawk fans one game at a time lets focus on Ark.St. GO HAWKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I keep reading, in these comments, and elsewhere, that PSU made a lot of mistakes, implying that, were it not for their own errors they might have won.
There's a funny thing foing on here, if anyone has noticed. PSU has a lot in common with almost all the teams that Iowa has beaten. They all made a lot of mistakes. All of them. Isn't that odd?

As a Hawkeye Alum I too agree there is a Rodney Dangerfield cloud hanging over the program. Everyone talks about the near miss that Iowa escaped against Northern Iowa. Yeah, it probably shouldn't have come down to 2 blocked kicks, but it is what it is. The thing no one talks about is the fact that Northern Iowa is ranked 4th in the FCS 1-AA coaches poll, and have won their following 3 games by the scores of 66-7, 30-0 and this week 35-7. This is the same division that has Appalacian State that took out Michigan a few years ago. It could be argued that the top teams in the i-AA poll are far better than many of these bottom level D-! schools that many of these ranked D-1 Schools have played in the early part of the schedule.

Thank you Northern Iowa for waking the Hawks up, because I believe the team is much more focused after escaping that day.

    Just my 2 cents.

    GO HAWKS!!!

Hey HAUS AND PHEFFER, evidently you can't read or are hallucinating. I said Clark dominated early, but Iowa adjusted and PSU didn't. Woulda-shoulda passes that get dropped don't count, they're meaningless. What you THINk should have happened and what did are nothing morte than your useless specualtion. I say it again, Iowa was average on offense. And the ball also bounced Iowa's way on one tipped Clark pass that was intercepted by Iowa. That's just the way it goes-either a player is in position to make a play or he isn't, he either makes the play or he doesn't. But don't make on like Iowa is so superior-they're not. PSU made A LOT of mistakes and handed Iowa opportunities PSU normally would not.

Maybe Penn State needs to start scheduling tougher teams those first three weeks. No one can say they were challenged and the fact that their offense never clicked is a problem. I live in PA so everyone is rediculous when it comes to Penn State and when I claimed they were over rated they wanted me dead. Whose right now? I knew they were going to lose I just didn't think it be this soon.

217..Are you serious? Clark dominated? Refer to my earlier posts about all the dropped passes that were perfectly thrown from Stanzi. Normally, that doesn't happen and Iowa comes back on that 1st drive and puts up seven and rolls from there. That was a fluke play where the wide receiver kicks the ball in the air and Penn St picks it off - that ball should have and normally would be caught. If that doesn't happen Iowa scores and wins big. Clark did nothing other than that 1st pass. Our running game and passing game is better than Penn State.

Give credit to Iowa, they flat outplayed PSU on defense vs. PSU's offense in the second half, but Iowa's offense was average at best. Iowa's "D" and special teams won this game. Without those scores by Iowa's "D", PSU would probablyn have won. Make no mistake about it, PSU's offensive line has serious work to do if they want to compete with Michigan and OSU. And PSU has to get it together on special teams. Still, Clark came out early and dominated. They've got to learn to adjust to the other teams defense after they adjust to PSU's offense. Turnovers killed us. I have seen a game played in a driving rainstorm like that in a long time. But Iowa deserves a lot of credit for hanging tough for the win. And knock off all the ageist comments about JoePa, people. You just look immature and really stupid.

As a fan of the Big 10 I thought both teams played very well under less them ideal conditions. Iowa is better team then most thought and Penn played well. I do have a bone of contention with the ratings. Although I am fine with the ratings. How does Penn lose to a great Iowa team and drop to 15 and Yet a mediocre USC plays so so against SJSU then gets lucky against the bucks, has their ass handed to them by the 172 nd ranked team and plays a lack luster game yesterday and moves back into the top 10. I the Big 10 has a built in discrimination because of so many decades of dominance. Great job Iowa you deserve to be higher and Penn you are also worthy of higher ranking. Go Big 10

PSU needs to play a better schedule to beat better teams. Akron, Syracuse and Temple don't prepare you for major college football. They played USC and got drilled. When will they get it?
