Nebraska will celebrate Memorial Stadium’s NCAA-record 300th consecutive sellout Saturday night, with the Cornhuskers donning throwback jerseys and the band playing music from the era of the stadium’s last non-sellout.

The best way for the Huskers to mark the occasion, though, would be to get back on track after another loss to a ranked opponent.

With the usual 85,000-plus fans expected, No. 25 Nebraska hopes a return to Lincoln will help it rebound from disheartening defeat as it faces Louisiana-Lafayette for the first time.

Memorial Stadium has been sold out for every game beginning with a homecoming victory over Missouri on Nov. 3, 1962. Nebraska has gone 260-39 during those contests.

The next-longest home sellout streak is Notre Dame’s 207.

The Huskers (2-1) defeated Florida Atlantic 49-3 and Arkansas State 38-9 to open the season with a pair of home victories. They failed to reach 3-0 for the second consecutive season, however, falling 16-15 at then-No. 13 Virginia Tech last Saturday.

It was Nebraska’s 10th straight loss to a Top 25 team, and 21st in 25 games against ranked foes.

Leading 12-10 in the fourth quarter, the Huskers failed to score after quarterback Zac Lee’s 17-yard run gave them first-and-goal from the Hokies’ 6-yard line.

Two holding penalties and two false starts left Nebraska out of range for junior Alex Henery, who kicked a career-high five field goals in the game and was named Big 12 special teams player of the week.

“We didn’t have penalties the entire game until that series,” junior wide receiver Niles Paul said. “It came at a point where we really needed the points. That hurt us.

“We left a lot of points out there on the field. … It’s really frustrating when your defense is playing the way they were.”

Nebraska is tied for seventh in the Football Bowl Subdivision with 9.3 points allowed per game, although the Huskers couldn’t stop Tyrod Taylor’s winning 11-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds left.

After being among the nation’s most efficient passers in the first two games, when he went 42 of 57 for 553 yards and six TDs, Lee was 11 for 30 for 136 yards and two interceptions against Virginia Tech.

With his left thumb wrapped, the first-year starter did not practice Monday, giving way to freshman Cody Green. Nebraska coach Bo Pelini called Lee’s wrap “just a little splinter,” and said he didn’t practice due to taking medicine for an unspecified reason.

Lee and Nebraska will face their third Sun Belt Conference opponent of the season, and will try to improve to 9-0 against teams from that league.

Like his counterpart, Louisiana-Lafayette quarterback Chris Masson is looking to rebound from a rough game. WIth a chance to guide the Ragin’ Cajuns to their first 3-0 start in 21 years, the sophomore was intercepted twice in a 31-3 road loss to then-No. 9 LSU last Saturday.

“It’s so frustrating right now because we were able to move the ball,” Masson said after going 16 for 36 for 159 yards. “We just couldn’t capitalize. We kept putting our defense in bad situations, and we have to stop doing that.”

Louisiana-Lafayette, allowing 158.3 yards per game on the ground, will have to find a way to slow down Roy Helu. The Huskers junior is seventh in the nation with 127.0 rushing yards a contest.

Its so hard for Husker haters to admit that NU has any football talent or coaching at all. Too bad, so sad. The Huskers will go to another bowl game this year and beat several quality opponents along the way. Now, as for VT, they are now in the top 10. They soundly beat the tar out of Miami. NU played stride for stride with VT. Watch the Missouri game next week. That will be a good tough game all the way. All Big 12 opponents on NUs schedule this year are tough teams. NU will win most (if not all) of those games. Then, talk all you want about beating ranked teams etc. etc. That argument is utter nonsense and NO measure of the 2009 season. GO HUSKERS!!!

For all of you other "football geniuses" that think the Huskers are overrated, explain how a team loses by 1 point on the road to a top 15 team and is "overrated". If anything, NU is under-rated, seeing as how Nebraska has dominated every other game it has played and lost by 1 point to a team that will be in the Top 10 once this week's rankings are announced.

And for all of you that want to bring up the past, like how Nebraska hasn't beaten a Top 20 team in several years - that has no bearing on the current season. Each season is a new year, previous wins and losses don't mean anything. If you want to bring up the past, how's this - 5 National Championships and over 800 wins. Far more than any other team in the Big 12 North. )))

i agree with this comment... thn added my own!

u all wanna start picking out past events that try to prove the huskers aint all that! good luck with that... since obviously the fans still seem to like them since we have just had our 300 sold out game! all u husker haters... can ur school equal that??? UM... THAT WOULD BE A NO! ur school also aint any where close to beating that! and being as how once a Husker fan always a Husker fan, no other school will beat that. since every Husker game will continue to be sold out!

ive been a husker fan all my life i grew up just down the street from the stadium 25th and holdredge to be exact right out from the fair grounds ill always be a fan i live in nc now. i got a chance to see them play when they played and beat wake forest a couple seasons ago i got to wear all my nu stuff and had a great time it reminded me of those saturdays in lincoln.we have to many teams here and nobody is really pulling for anybody at least in lincoln you dont get into a argument with some one over who theyre pulling for they are solidly behind theyre team and thats the way it should be.the days of nu lining up and smaching defenses into the ground are over because of parity and coaches wont comitt to that style of offense because if you get behind its hard to catch up but un has and will keep giving fans plenty to brag about go huskers

I really do not hate Nebraska, in fact I was cheering for them to beat V-Tech. I pull for every Big 12 team outside of Missouri during the non-conference. If Kansas beats Southern Miss by more than a touchdown on Saturday then #20 is not overrated. Southern Miss is a solid team

According to Bill, looks like KU is overrated.

huskers beat another scrub team. how can they possibly be ranked? They have lost 21 of the last 22 games against a top 20 team. Havn't beat a top 20 team in 6 years and havn't beat a top 20 team on the road for 12 years. You may be a fan but how could you possibly think they are any good at all when the only wins they get are against teams they pay a million dollars to ????

Well the Huskers played good today last week they lost to V.T. its gonna happen this is 2009 not 1994 or 1995 they dont have Fraizer or Crouch wish they still did but its gonna take some time if they do make a come back. I'm a long time Huskers fan and hope they do well , They have a new QB and hes no Tebow but hes lookin pretty good so far, the team is young. Guess we will see how things go against Mizzou and OU. Think there gonna come out ahead against Kanas, But I dont think that they are a top 10 team maybe hopes for next year, Sure wish they still had Tom Osborn as head coach. But Bo has done well turning the team around I just cant wait till they get a win against a ranked team. The Power Of Red baby!!!

Being a die-hard Husker fan, some of you guys belong on other threads, we won the game tonight, thats good. We're 3-1. That's also good, we lost to V-tech, big deal. WE PLAYED better then overrated Miami did, we better be ahead of them in the rankings when the new polls come out, I was amazed by how bad Miami did against Vtech, we kept Tyrod from running and throwing the ball and Miami couldnt do neither. I personally don't care if Kansas is ranked or not, we play them soon and that should be a good game, may the best man win, preferably the one that doesn't weigh 400 pounds. GO BIG RED!! Blackshirts for life.

I grew up in Nebraska and I am a Husker fan FOREVER. But I did find out that the sun still comes up the next day even if your team gets beat, even badly. There is a lot of parity in college foot ball now days. It should be fun for the players and the fans. IT IS A GAME! I live in Madison, Wisconsin, and have since '66 so I have to listen to the Badger fans. But like I said, it's a game. ENJOY!

Do the Cornholers want to continue scheduling these divison 2 scrub teams to get what?
An invitation to the Polen Weedeater Bowl or some other obscure irrelevant bowl game.
Although I will give the Holers credit for scheduling 2 losses in the home and home with
Va Tech. That must of been the former AD Steve Pederson's idea before he got cornholed out. Probably to be replaced with another Division 2 school like Howard or Maine. They will watch anything in Lincoln, even paint drying. As long as it's red paint.
