A victory over a top-10 opponent in the season opener had Alabama looking poised to make a run for the national championship.

The Crimson Tide couldn’t match that intensity last weekend, though, and needed a late surge to put away a lesser opponent.

With another Sun Belt Conference team in North Texas coming to Alabama on Saturday, coach Nick Saban wants the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide to come out focused and with more energy before the competition gets tougher with the start of SEC play.

Alabama (2-0) is considered a favorite to win the SEC West title and contend for the national title. The Crimson Tide looked the part in a 34-24 victory over then-No. 7 Virginia Tech in the opener at the Georgia Dome but didn’t have that same spark in last Saturday’s 40-14 win over Florida International.

Alabama was favored by nearly five touchdowns, but the Golden Panthers hung around into the fourth quarter.

The Tide led 20-14 before freshman Trent Richardson’s nine-yard touchdown run with 3:14 remaining in the third. In the final quarter, Richardson scored on a 35-yard run and Terry Grant followed with a 42-yard TD run to put the game away.

“I don’t think our guys came out with the kind of energy, enthusiasm and intensity that we need to set the tone and we allowed them to stay in the game with some mistakes that we made and some things that we didn’t do correctly,” Saban said.

“I think we need to learn to get off fast and finish strong. I think that’s what we want to continue to emphasize with the players so we can play with a model of consistency over a 60-minute period.”

While the game was a struggle at times, a rising star emerged at running back for Alabama, which opens SEC play next weekend against Arkansas.

With starter Mark Ingram limited by the flu and top sub Roy Upchurch hobbled by an early ankle injury, Richardson stepped up with a stellar performance.

After having three carries in his first collegiate game against the Hokies, Richardson finished with 118 yards on 15 attempts while showing breakaway speed.

“Trent is a magnificent player,” tight end Colin Peek said. “I’ve been waiting for him to have a huge breakout day. Trent has so much talent.”

Julio Jones sat out most of the last game with a bruised right knee, but Saban said the star wide receiver and Upchurch have made significant improvement this week.

Although the offense wasn’t fully loaded against Florida International, Alabama still racked up 516 yards.

Greg McElroy completed a school-record 14 consecutive passes before finishing 18 of 24 for 241 yards and a touchdown.

McElroy will see a familiar face on the opposing sideline this week, as North Texas coach Todd Dodge was McElroy’s high school coach at Southlake Carroll (Texas).

“Other than this game, I will be pulling for them the rest of the year,” McElroy said.

Dodge will be without his starting quarterback this weekend after his son, Riley Dodge, separated his shoulder in last Saturday’s 31-30 double-overtime loss to Ohio.

Nathan Tune will start after completing 9 of 15 passes for 69 yards and one interception last week.

With their backup quarterback starting, the Mean Green (1-1) would probably like to rely on their strong running game, which has amassed 411 yards, but that could pose as a problem against the suffocating Alabama defense.

The Tide limited Florida International to one yard on the ground, and through two games they’ve yielded 65 rushing yards on 57 attempts.

The Mean Green have also had little luck against ranked opponents, losing all 13 games since 1996. They’ve been outscored 297-23 in five games against top-10 teams since 2004.

Alabama is 2-0 against North Texas, and this will be the first meeting since the Tide’s 33-7 win in 2002.

and before the vocabulary police return, I realize it should have been "then" and not "than". Then again, you misspell every other word. LOL

    Jim,
Based on 2007 stats, Alabama rates 46th out of 50 states in medium household income. What does that tell you about your state? If Alabama was pumping out a high rate of intellectuals than (a) they are moving to other states (and who can blame them) or (b) they just aren't that smart.

I think it is a combination of both personally. So go back to making those meatball subs for you and your inbred neighbors....hahahahahahaha

It has always amazed me how much supposed fans of other teams spend so much more time bashing Bama than they do extolling the virtues of their own teams.

    I wonder why?

LOL....Yes it took me hours to figure out that you misspelled all of those words. I think it's hilarious that you didn't even acknowledge your poorly worded diatribe. What a baffoon! So you admit Alabama makes all "graduates" take an exam. That is soooooo funny. They truly do test to make sure the morons actually learned something at that joke of a school. Are you saying the word "too" means "also". Do you have even a remote grasp of the english language? Too does not mean also. What a total butt-pirate. Tell me, did your mother give birth to any marginally intelligent offspring? I feel very sorry for your family and your boyfriend. Keep on taking the pounding in the rear like you were born to do. LOL

Well it's PALE_FIRE not PAIL fire.

It's the title of a book by Vladimir Nabokov...do you know what books are?

I'm afraid that "too" would have been the correct usage since you were using it to mean "also".

When I was making reference to an exit exam, I was refering to the writing test that most colleges and universities make a student take prior to graduation.

I don't have to make you look unintelligent. You did that for me.

AZZ CLOWN? Are you 14 years old or 30 y/o a hip gangsta wannabe?

I'm glad you took the hours of research to discover my errors. It must mean THAT I really got to you, huh

You are a perfect example of what happens when a baby is breast fed by his father.

Pail Fire. Are you the vocabulary police? If so, I'm afraid I have to make a citizen's arrest.

    1) You state: "I've never posted a comment but feel compelled do so this time" I guess you mean.."compelled TO do so this time. You forgot your cherished word "to"
    2) "proposterous" is spelled preposterous
    3) "extrodinarily" is spelled extraordinarily
    4) "wich" is spelled which
    5) you should never use the word "that" in a sentence when it is not necesary. Try taking the word "that" out of the first sentence
    6) You should never end a sentence with the word "it"
    7) "I've seen those folks everywhere I have been in the US." "Been" is the wrong word
    8) What is a college exit exam? Is that an exam you take when you graduate from Alabama to make sure you actually learned something while you attended the pathetic university?
    9) "to" was the correct usage in the one sentence. Let me give you an example of when the word "too" applies (see below)

You're too easy to debunk and try too hard to attempt to refute my points. I just made you look like the unintelligent, azz-clown that is Pail Fire.

I occasionally read these comments and I'm not at all surprised at the course that they are taking. I've never posted a comment but feel compelled do so this time. I'm a lifelong Bama fan and like all Bama fans I like to see them win and celebrate when they do, wich is often. I think every fan knew that this was essentially a "tune-up" or scrimmage game. NT fans shouldn't grumble about it. THEIR school accepted a contract to play for pay against a team they most likely wouldn't beat. If some Bama fans want to beat THEIR chests, that's THEIR prerogative. What I don't like is how these posts seem to deviate away from the football game. Now this thread of posts seems to have turned into some socio-economic tirade. I would like to know what the connection is between a football game and the state of Alabama's educational and income statistics.
I can only assume that "the truth" is from Texas or somehow affiliated with the state. It's a nice state...kinda flat and dry but it's nice. When I was THERE I met plenty of nice educated people. I also saw alot of toothless, uneducated, trashy Jerry Springer show rejects. I've seen them in Michigan. I've seen them in Ohio. I've seen them in Pennsylvania. I've seen those folks everywhere I have been in the US. It's not a phenomenon unique to Alabama. Calling people "sucker" and "pole smoker" didn't impress on me that "the truth" was an extrodinarily educated person. Furthermore, his incorrect usage of "their" in the second to last sentence in his proposterous litany about our state confirms that he will never pass a college exit exam...unless he went to NT.

Gotta love these morons like "the truth" that are soooooo tough behind a computer keyboard. Just like some of the dogs I know. They are the loudest barking dogs you ever met until you get on the other side of the fence with them. Then once the fence closes behind you on your way out they start barking up a storm again. The only difference between 'the truth' and those dogs are that the dogs have a better vocabulary and probably better looking girlfriend.

Do you Bama Fans realize you are on the North Texas teams site. Throughout the history of The Tide we have tried to uphold a level a class for our schooland state so please think of that when you get on another teams site a brag on how bad you beat a good team without their starting quarterback that plays at a far lesser level than we do. They gave it their all on the field so show them some class and congradulate them for playing hard and move on. To the North Texas fans all I can say is I am sorry. I have been a Bama man for over 40 years and want you guys to know that the trash you are hearing on your site is not a testament to the character of our school or fans as a whole. I hope your quarterback gets better and that your team improves. You taught our quarterback good in Texas and we are thankful of that. By playing teams above your level you can only improve. Keep up the good work and continue to fight on. We know what it feels like to get knocked down....it's how you get back up that matters. Just overlook the bad comments and don't judge us by a few of our fans... most of us have class and respect for our school and our opponents.

Gators looked weak in their game, Texas looked very poor in theirs, Cal got ass whipped (lol) , now seems to me that the top 5 is looking a little more clear !! Cal got beat by a team that didn't have a win in a long time , Fla was weak against one of the bottom teams in the SEC . But ... I kind of wish Bama was a little lower in the rankings then # 3 now , it's better to move up in the second half of the season ! I live in Louisiana and I get tired of hearing tigers-tigers-tigers (lol) . Can" wait till Bama lays another whipping on their ass ! ROLL TIDE ROLL

    To "The Truth",
How does it feel to be a Mean Green fan. Just because you got you A$$ handed to you by a bunch of "toothless rednecks" doesn't mean you can't live a long a productive life married to your sister.
Seriously, there is only one school in the country that can claim more championships than 'Bama and that's Notre Dame. All schools go through times of highs and lows and now that 'Bama is getting back on top, deal with it, 'cause it isn't going to change until at least 2017 (Saban's contract).

Wow...penniless, dirt-poor...why don't you throw in "toothless" and "inbred" while you are at it?
Hey...you there...the oxymoron who calls himself "The Truth"...
Do a Google search of the city that I live in Alabama.
Just type in "Average Adjusted Gross Income zip code 35223", and look at that number, and know that I own my own small business and I bring in nearly three times that figure.
Also know that I have one of the *smaller* houses in my particular neighborhood, which consists mostly of stone-faced Tudors, modern "landscaped" homes, and two-level Cape Cod-style homes.
I'd invite you over to see how "poor" we are, here in ol' Bammy, but I doubt you could afford the gas or oil to put in your `83 Reliant, to make the trip from whatever ghetto/trailer park you call home.
But seriously...jealousy and hatred is soul-destructive (especially considering that the focus of your rath is a *game*), and it makes you look even more stupid than you obviously already are.
Why not expound on the great qualities of the school that you cheer for, instead of shooting wildly errant arrows at a school and fans of that school that you obviously know nothing about?
